Study of Romanian Pilgrimage Tourism Products – A Cultural Behavior Approach Letiția Adina NEGRUȘA1 Valentin TOADER2 Liviu VIDICAN-MANCI3 Abstract This study will concentrate on the Romanian pilgrimage tourism supply, in order to identify the characteristics of pilgrimage products. Using the Hofstede’s approach for Romanian society, we develop a meta-analysis and a systematic review of the most important research studies done on this topic for Romanian culture. As a result, we have determined the weight of each cultural dimension and their effects on the religious tourism and pilgrimage behavior. We correlate the findings from Hofstede’s theory with the data about the supply of pilgrimages in our country: main pilgrimage routes, services provided by the hospitality units, seasonality, length of stay, tourism and religious objectives the pilgrims may visit. The collectivism tendency and high uncertainty avoidance represent the main cultural aspects having an influence on pilgrims’ behavior and on the Romania’s supply of pilgrimages. As a result, most of the pilgrimages are concentrated in few destinations with a strong spiritual sense for an orthodox, have a small length of stay, while the services provided are customized to fulfill the pilgrims’ basic needs and emphasize the idea of sharing resources between pilgrims. The presence of a priest as a spiritual guide may lead to an improved pilgrimage experience. Keywords: Hofstede’s dimensions, cultural behavior, pilgrimage, religious tourism, supply. JEL classification: L83, E03 Introduction The pilgrimage is a constancy of humanity. Through pilgrimage people try to meet divinity in a spiritual way and gain the spiritual salvation. The Italian psychiatrist Claudio Rise emphasized that pilgrimage is not a spiritual fitness, but the demonstration of human need to find out for themselves the answers to the great questions of existence, starting on the go to a certain destination.

  • Church Union in Transylvania and Its Impact on Visual Art
CHURCH UNION IN TRANSYLVANIA AND ITS IMPACT ON VISUAL ART Petr BALCÁREK Abstract: The present paper deals with the topic of intercultural exchange between the Latin West and the Orthodox East in the regions of the Carpathian Mountains in the period between 17th and 18th centuries. The author focuses on the diffusion of Orthodox icons into Roman Catholic churches, as well as on the diffusion (and, later, the acculturation) of western glass painted images in Transylvania. These phenomena were made possible by the political, sociological, and cultural context at the time, triggered mainly by the Union of the Orthodox Church with the Roman Catholic Church. Key words: Latin West, Orthodox East, intercultural exchange, visual culture, diffusion, 17th-18th centuries Introduction The present paper deals with the topic of the diffusion of cultures between the Latin Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches in Europe, more specifically in the regions of the Carpathian Mountains in the period between 17th and 18th centuries. Given the political act of the Union of the Orthodox Church with the Roman Catholic Church in Transylvania, concretely of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church and the Romanian Orthodox Church being united with the Roman Catholic Church, there have been many attempts, some of them crowned by success, to make use of elements specific to each of the two religious cultures to form a bridge between these Churches. In this study we shall PhD, The Institute for Byzantine and Eastern Christian Studies, Olomouc, Czech Republic; “1 Decembrie 1918” University in Alba Iulia (Faculty of Orthodox Theology). 16th International Symposium on Science, Theology and Arts (ISSTA 2017) look at ways in which the union of the Churches has been reflected in visual arts.

  • Pulpits, Ballots and Party Cards: Religion and Elections in Romania
Religion, State & Society, Vo!' 33, No, 4, December 2005 Pulpits, Ballots and Party Cards: Religion and Elections in Romania LAVINIA STAN & LUCIAN TURCESCU Introduction: Political Changes since 1989 The literature on elections in Romania has grown exponentially since citizens won the right to elect and be elected to public office following the collapse of the communist regime, but to date no study has dealt systematically with the impact of religious actors and symbols on electoral campaigns, although elections and party politics have best illustrated the politicians' readiness to take advantage of the church-state relationship, and the churches' eagerness to reassert their role and shape Romanian democracy according to their vision (Shafir, 1997; Popescu, 1997, 2003; Pop-Eleche~, 2001; De Neve, 2001; Mungiu-Pippidi, 2001; Roper, 2003). In the aftermath of the December 1989 regime change, Romania moved quickly to adopt permissive legislation encouraging political parties to compete in elections for the right to form the government. Parties needed only 251 members to register, and as a result some 200 formations spanning the entire political spectrum were set up in a matter of months. Polls were organised in 1990, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 (local elections in June, parliamentary and presidential elections concomitantly in November). In local elections, citizens chose mayors directly, and local and county councillors indirectly. A mixed proportional representation system with party lists and deputy seats set aside for designated minority groups was adopted for electing the 140 members of the upper senate and the 345 members of the lower chamber of deputies. The president is elected directly from among candidates who gather at least 100,000 support signatures.

  • The Greek-Catholic Church in Transylvania Between 1918-1940
Acta Musei Napocensis, 55/II, 2018, p. 101–117 ALONE, AMONG ITS OWN: THE GREEK-CATHOLIC CHURCH IN TRANSYLVANIA BETWEEN 1918-1940 LUCIAN TURCU1 Abstract: This study presents the historical evolution of the Romanian Greek‑Catholic Church between the two World Wars. After World War I, the Romanian Greek‑Catholic Church was forced to adapt to the new political, ideological and cultural context specific to Greater Romania. This study shows how the Greek‑Catholic Church anchored itself in the legislation of the Romanian Kingdom after 1918. It analyses the need for an institutional restructuring of the Church and its new configuration as of 1930, outlining the educational challenges and the solutions the Church came up with, and making reference to ways of enhancing the spiritual life of the clergy and of the laity, the revitalisation of monastic life, the encouragement of religious and moralising publications, the building of places of worship and the idea of the ecclesiastical unity of the Romanian people. Keywords: reorganisation, interconfessional competition, denominational schools, monastic orders, publications Rezumat: Studiul de faţă prezintă evoluţia istorică a Bisericii greco‑catolice româneşti în intervalul cuprins între cele două războaie mondiale.

Address Details 15 Foundation Communicantes Nijmegen The Netherlands 2006 Introduction ‘Ambiguity’ characterises the developments in Romanian society over the last 15 years. In December 1989 the communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was expelled from power, and Ion Illiescu, one of his former paladins who had previously fallen out of grace, took over the presidency. He held office until 1996 and then miraculously returned for yet another term in 2000. At the same time the seemingly directionless and indecipherable day-to-day politics raised questions about the nature of the Romanian revolution as well. Rethinking this recent past is not without importance, but, quite understandably, most Romanians seem more preoccupied with their still uncertain future. Changes often went in all different directions, except those many had hoped for. There remains a lot to be desired, and at various levels: the religious landscape, political culture, rule of law, devolution of central government power, economical development, social justice, security in life... To rebuild what has been destroyed or to reconstruct what even today is in the process of destruction, and to do so while bridging 42 years of underground existence, this still is the key task of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church in the post-communist era.
