1 Coaching Staff Doug Bartlett Head Coach SUNY-Geneseo ‘70 21st Season

Entering his 21st season at the helm of the VMI lacrosse program, Doug Bartlett enters his third decade at the Institute with enthusiasm and optimism for the years ahead. For his first 17 seasons in Lexington, the Keydets were a program without a conference home, having to play as an independent, without the benefits of postseason honors, a conference schedule and of course opportunities to play for a championship.

However, all that changed in 2003 when Bartlett led the Keydets into the first season in their new home, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

“I’ve waited 18 years to find a home for this program and to give it something to play for (a conference championship),”said Bartlett after his team defeated Canisius, 13-9 in its first-ever conference game. “Now VMI lacrosse is reaping the benefits of being a member of a conference.”

It was that moment that Bartlett knew his program was headed in a new and more promising direction. With 114 victories at VMI to his credit, Bartlett remains the architect of the Keydet lacrosse program. In his 20 seasons, Bartlett has built his program from the ground up.

In 1986, Bartlett took over a team that began varsity play in 1983 and immediately brought respectability to the program. Six of his first seven seasons at the helm of VMI resulted in non-losing seasons, while five of those were winning seasons. In the past 20 seasons, Bartlett’s accomplishments with the Keydet lacrosse program are unprecedented. His 1992 team was ranked in the Top 25 lacrosse poll, making it only the fourth team in VMI history to be ranked in a national poll, while his 1995 edition received votes as well.

Bartlett’s coaching excellence and accomplishments at VMI have been repeatedly recog- nized by his peers. He has twice been selected as a coach for the South team in the North/South Lacrosse Classic –for the first time in 1992, and again in 1998 when he joined Maryland coach Dick Edell on the South sidelines. Bartlett has been a featured speaker at the Southeastern Region Lacrosse Coaches Clinic and also has been a keynote speaker at the United States Lacrosse Association national convention.

2006 VMI LACROSSE “Any time I get a chance to give back to this game that has been so good to me, it’s very important,”said Bartlett.

He currently serves as chairman of the Division I North/South Lacrosse game. Bartlett has developed a reputation as a coach who pushes his players to excel on the field and pushes himself in the recruiting wars to obtain top notch lacrosse players for his program and for VMI.

Bartlett is a 1970 graduate of SUNY-Geneseo, where he started on the lacrosse team for four years. He previously coached at Radford University, first as an assistant and then as head coach. He is the father of three daughters – Jessie (17), Kelsey (14) and Maiah (11).

2 Coaching Staff Mic Grant Associate Head Coach Defensive Coordinator 9th Season Hampden-Sydney ‘92

Every great coach needs a right-hand man to do his “behind-the-scenes work.” Doug Bartlett’s right-hand man is Mic Grant, who begins his ninth season as VMI’s defensive coordinator and his fifth with the title of As- sociate Head Coach.

In 2001, Grant was named the recruiting coordinator and became more heavily involved with the program’s budget management. Since then, VMI has brought in four of the biggest and most talented recruiting classes in the program’s history.

“I think that the promotion and additional responsibilities exemplified Mic’s commitment of positive contri- butions to the program,” said Bartlett. “It was certainly a statement of appreciation for what Mic has done for VMI lacrosse over the years.”

2006 VMI LACROSSE Grant came to VMI from Hampden-Sydney College, where he was an assistant coach for five seasons under Ray Rostan. While at Hampden-Sydney, Grant worked with the Tiger defensemen. His primary duties included monitoring academic progress of the student-athletes, scouting opponents, and assisting with re- cruiting new players. His eye for talented lacrosse players was recognized, as six of his players were named All-Americans during that time period.

Grant also has extensive experience running lacrosse camps, working at camps in Baltimore and Charlottesville, as well as in the Hampden-Sydney area.

As a player, Grant was a two-year lacrosse letterwinner at Hampden-Sydney, where he captained the squad during 1991, his senior season. Later that year, Grant was selected to play in the Division III North/South Senior All-Star game. He played his first two seasons of collegiate lacrosse at Ohio Wesleyan University, where he was a member of the Battling Bishops’ 1988 and 1989 NCAA Division III National Finalist teams.

A native of Charlottesville, Va., Grant was a first team All-American and first team All-State defenseman at St.Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville. As a senior at St. Anne’s, he was the men’s lacrosse team MVP.

Grant is married to the former Heather Jenkins. The couple resides in Lexington.

3 Coaching Staff Nat St. Laurent Assistant Coach Second Season Keuka ‘04

Heading into his second season at the Institute is 2004 Keuka (NY) College graduate Nat St. Laurent. Nat’s pri- mary responsibilities rest with the Keydet offense, while assisting in many other aspects of the program including the recruitment of new players.

Nat’s impact on the VMI offense has been immediately felt by the program, as last year’s team ranked in the top three in nearly all offensive categories in the MAAC, in- cluding first in total points per game (16.29) and assists per game (6.14), as well as second in goals per game (10.14). Nationally, the Keydets ranked 19th overall in scoring and 11th in face-off win percentage.

“After working with Nat for a year now, he has proven himself to be everything we had hoped he would be,” said head coach Doug Bartlett. “He has added new insight and vision to our offensive unit, and made a huge contribution to our recruiting efforts.”

St. Laurent began his collegiate career at Lasell College in Newton, Mass., where he was named team captain as a freshman following a standout high school career at national power Carthage High School. While at Carthage, St. Laurent played with many of the biggest names in lacrosse, including Mike and Ryan Powell, Jason and Josh Coffman and Eric Wood, to name a few.

After one season at Lasell, he moved on to Jefferson Community College in Watertown, N.Y. At Jefferson, he was named Honorable Mention All-Region after leading the team in scoring as the Cannoneers made it to the national tournament.

St. Laurent transferred to Keuka College in upstate to wrap up his playing career, but injuries limited his playing time to only three games at Keuka. Nat graduated from Keuka in the Spring of 2004 with his degree in Elementary and Special Education.

2006 VMI LACROSSE St. Laurent has worked many summer camps, including the Lacrosse Academy camp in Lexington and Spe- cial Olympics and elementary school camps back in New York.

St. Laurent comes to Lexington after finishing up his degree that he currently uses as a sixth grade special education teacher at Enderly Heights Elementary School in Buena Vista, Va. He is also an instructor in the 80th infantry division of the Army Reserve based out of Charlottesville, Va., and is in the process of getting an officer’s commission.

He and his wife to be, Cristin Cavanaugh, reside in Lexington.

29 VMI Lacrosse Facilities General Information:

VMI prides itself on providing the student-athlete with the tools to im- prove himself not just intellectually, but physically. The ability to help every Keydet soccer player reach his maximum potential has itself been brought to a new level in 1995 with a massive renovation and refurbish- ing of the Charles S. Luck ‘20 Memorial Weight Room, located in Cocke Hall.

With over 7,000 square feet of space, the Luck Weight Room now con- tains over 15,000 lbs. of free weights, and 2,000 lbs. of dumbbell weights. Over 70 pieces of free weight training equipment are available for the use of the student-athlete, and over 40 pieces of resistive training ma- chine-type equipment.

Among the key acquisitions of the recent renovations was the addition and enlargement of the dumbbell training area, which almost tripled in size and now contains weights ranging from five to 140 pounds. 34 VMI Athletic Director Donny White Director of Intercollegiate Athletics VMI ‘65

The most ambitious capital improvements to athletic facilities in 20 years is about to be launched under the Vision 2039 initiative of VMI Superintendent General J.H. Binford Peay, and seventh year Athletic Director Donny White has been a guiding force in the process.

Over the next year, groundbreaking will take place for improvements to the football stadium, and a new 1,000 seat baseball stadium at Patchin Field is expected to open in time for the 2007 season.

Facilities improvement is just one issue that White has tackled since taking over as AD in 1998. Upon his return, White immediately went to work addressing the challenging issues facing the VMI athletic department. At the same time, he has built support for intercollegiate athletics among the VMI community and its alumni. His effort has resulted in a change in conference affiliation, increased funding for operations, the development of women’s athletics, and a better overall competitive environment for VMI sports.

White returned to the Institute on Apr. 22, 1998, after serving six successful years as athletic director at Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Va. White guided the school’s athletic program to unprecedented achievement both on and off the field and led the efforts to improve funding and facilities for the school’s athletic program.

White compiled a distinguished VMI coaching career in two sports spanning 15 years. He joined the football staff of Bob Thalman in 1971 as a defensive backfield coach and helped lead the Keydets to two Southern Conference Championships and a State Championship in 1977. White coached the defensive backs to a number 2006 VMI LACROSSE one national ranking in 1975 and number four ranking the following season. He served as VMI co-defensive coordinator from 1976 to 1981 and had the Southern Conference’s top-ranked defense in 1977. His defensive backfields led the conference in pass defense three times. White also recruited seven football players who were selected all-conference.

In the fall of 1981, White became VMI head baseball coach and began to resurrect a program that had not won a Southern Conference game the three previous years. His 1982 debut squad compiled six league wins and White was named Southern Conference Co-Coach of the Year. His teams won 85 games in six years and his 1987 squad reached the Southern Conference championship game. At that time, White also taught on the Physical Education staff as an assistant professor.

White entered private business in 1987, but returned to the athletic ranks in 1992 when he accepted the athletic director postion at Patrick Henry. White supervised all areas of the Patriot athletic program and helped improve facilities, season ticket sales, and booster club membership. The football program reached the ranks of the state’s elite, winning 57 of 65 games, five district titles, four regional titles, a state runner-up trophy, and the state AAA, Division 5 championship in 1994.

White is a 1965 graduate of VMI with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. As a cadet, he was a Distinguished Military Student, named Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, and was awarded the Pres. Brown Athletic Cup for excellence. White co-captained the 1964 VMI football team and was selected All- Southern Conference in baseball for three consecutive years as a shortstop while also leading the team in batting. He was inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.

After graduation from VMI, White was commissioned as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. His decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters.

White and his wife, Bettie reside in Lexington.
