The 2008 Virginia Military Institute lacrosse media guide was compiled for the benefit of all interested in learning detailed information regarding the Institute, coaches, staff, and student-athletes of the Keydet lacrosse program. There are decisions made in every young man’s life that make everlasting changes in how he is perceived by those around him and how he perceives himself. None can be more telling than what he pursues after high school. There are many fine colleges and universities from which to choose but none tells more of a young man’s character and drive than VMI.

The Virginia Military Institute is one of the finest institutions of higher learning in the country that sets itself apart from other universities with its military element of discipline. VMI students not only graduate with a highly respected degree, but one that is highly sought after in the workforce because of its focus and training in the area of leadership. I have the distinct pleasure of working at a school that truly makes a positive impact on a young man’s life.

I believe that VMI and all of its challenges are ideal for a college lacrosse player with a burning desire to be more than he once thought possible. The climate at VMI for lacrosse has never been better and the education is second-to-none.

It is clearly our objective to attract the top lacrosse players from the state of Virginia and across the country, but we look for even more in a young man. VMI lacrosse embraces the missions of the Institute and seeks to draw from the challenges a strength that we will carry on the field, helping lead us to victory. 6 2008 MEDIA GUIDE www.vmikeydets.com 2008 SEASON PREVIEW Keydets Hope Competition, Senior Leadership Fuels ‘08 Success

With the dawning of a new campaign, VMI Lacrosse continues to strive toward the goal of becoming a top Division I program. During the 2008 season, the Keydets will look towards two primary factors to reveal the season’s outcome: Positional battles and senior leadership. VMI features a deep senior class, including pre-season all-MAAC selection Kevin Hill at attackman, co-captain Pat Zanelotti at defenseman, and seven others, all of whom should play a key role during the upcoming season. Despite the talented senior class, and the leadership they bring to the table, the other key to the Keydets’ season is expected to be the positional battles. No one is assured a position, and Coach Jeff Shirk expects this to benefit the squad.

“I believe that the competition for positions is key to our season, because it pre- vents players from becoming complacent,” Shirk stated. “When a player is not assured of a starting position, he plays harder, he works harder, and I believe that healthy competition such as this makes for better lacrosse players. Whether a player is at the top of the depth chart, or perhaps a bit lower, they’re all pushing each other and making each other better.” Goalie:

At press time, VMI has just two full-time goalies on the roster. Sean McCoy returns as the projected starter. After a promising freshman campaign, McCoy has continued to improve. “I honestly think he’ll be one of the best goalies in the conference this year,” Coach Shirk stated about his primary netminder. “Before it’s all said and done, he might be one of the best goalies in the coun- try.” John Collier is the backup at the position, and he continues to strive to improve while demonstrating a solid work ethic, while Patrick Maloney will also backup McCoy.

Defense: Senior defenseman Pat Zanelotti was named co-captain of this year’s squad. One-third of the nine seniors on this year’s Keydet squad are featured on the defensive unit. Co-Captain Pat Zanelotti, Brent Whitsitt, and Robert Hawley are expected to form a powerful headline triumvirate at their position. Zanelotti, Face-off: voted co-captain with David Jacobs, began his career as a long-stick middie, but has successfully made the transition to defenseman. He features a strong VMI looks to improve in their face-off ability, after having a bit of a down year combination of size and athleticism to go with his experience. VMI will wrap up their non-conference schedule with a trip to Robert Morris, and Apr. 26 at Manhattan Riverdale, NY 1 p.m. then will open league play on March 15 versus the . Conference play will feature four games apiece both home and away, and will involve the Home Games in Bold usual cast of league opponents, including the four who will travel to Lexington: Marist, Wagner, St. Joseph’s, and Canisius. VMI will host the Golden Griffins on April 19, and will honor their nine seniors that day. The Keydets will travel to Manhattan, Mount St. Mary’s, Siena, and Providence during conference play.

VMI had a difficult time in the MAAC last season, but with a season of growth under their belts, the Keydets and their staff believe they will be much improved this season. However, despite the growth the Keydets are showing, perhaps the thing Coach Shirk is most proud of is the previously mentioned nine seniors. From Kevin Hill, to Pat Zanelotti, to Matt Harrison, John Regan, Jr., and on down the line, VMI’s lacrosse coach spoke proudly of the nine men who will lead the squad during the 2008 campaign.

“One of the best things about our senior class is that they’ve really embraced what we’ve been trying to teach as a coaching staff, bought into our philosophy and set a great example for our younger players. I can’t say enough about how badly they want to win, and about how much leadership they bring to our squad. I’m proud of how all of the seniors have bought into what it takes to be successful, not only on the field, but in all aspects of life.”

Goalie Sean McCoy (L) returns, and looks to build on a promis- ing freshman campaign. Senior Kevin Hill returns as the team’s top scorer, after posting 50 points (24 goals and 26 assists) in 2007.

Best Colleges,” named VMI the No. 1 public-supported liberal arts college in the nation. FACULTY: All VMI faculty members teach in the classroom, and 98 percent hold doctoral or terminal degrees in their disciplines. The cadet to faculty ratio is 11:1, permitting a close, “mentor” relationship between a cadet and instructor, and faculty research is frequently conducted in partnership with cadets. ROTC instructors are experienced military officers, and make an outstanding contribution to cadet leadership training. ACADEMIC PROGRAM: VMI’s demanding academic program reflects established needs and emerging trends of an ever-changing, global society. A robust undergradu- ate research initiative extends through summer, affording cadets and facul- ty financial incentives and continuous support for a wide range of inves- tigative projects. The Institute’s international programs include faculty and student exchanges with more than a dozen international academies and universities, seven foreign internships, and numerous study-abroad pro- grams each semester and during the summer. The Institute Honors Program offers highly motivated and high-achieving cadets the opportunity to enrich their academic experience, including through competition for prestigious external scholarships. The Institute Writing Program seeks to equip cadets for both academic success and participation in the full range of rhetorical occasions they will encounter in their lives as citizens and professionals.

VMI is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, is a member of American Council on Education, the Association of American Colleges, the College Entrance Examination Board, and the Association of Virginia Colleges. VMI’s engineering programs are accredit- ed by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology; and the chemistry program is accredited by the American Chemical Society. MAJORS AND DEGREES: VMI offers the baccalaureate degree in fourteen curricula. The B.S. is awarded in applied mathematics, chemistry, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics. The B.A. is conferred in economics and business, English, history, internation- al studies, modern languages, and psychology. The B.S. or B.A. can be earned in biology. A course of study leading to the B.S. or B.A. is chosen upon entering VMI, but transfer from one major field of study to another is permitted.

In addition to the new third barracks structure, this four- year project will include moderniza- tion of all rooms in the current Old and New Barracks as well. General Peay and his staff have also spent hundreds of hours buried in the details of cadet leadership functions, cadet organizations, the regimental and class systems, the Honor System, and the cadet daily schedule. "We must have the daily schedule right; leadership, cadet life, study time, management skills, and everything else at VMI revolve around that," says General Peay.

Academically, VMI remains a clear leader among small undergraduate colleges. As part of the extensive Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation process, the academic team is currently engaged in conducting a comprehensive review of its "core-curriculum." Modernized and technologically enhanced academic buildings and a full academic support staff compliment splendid instructors. The Institute receives annual recognition for its programs.
