Certainly the prelude is one of the great Welsh hymns to come into use is one of the most poignant and deeply-felt pieces for in English. It has been translated into at least 75 the organ. The postlude is based on the chorale tune languages. It is matched here with the vigorous and for singing the Lord’s Prayer in the German Lutheran widely used Welsh tune CWM RHONDDA. He was a hugely prolific composer of Protestant church music, especially .Details of his early life are sparse, as is common for compos- ers of the time. He was born in . By 1601 he was in , as a music teacher. In 1602 he took a position as Kapellmeister in to Prince Johann Casimir, and he remained in Coburg for the rest of his life.

The Offertory, “Wilt thou forgive” is based on a text and tune in our Hymnal, number 140, and is a poem by John Donne (1573-1631) of ”No man is an island” fame. The organ accompaniment, byPeter Crisafulli, is set to music much like a harpsichord piece. Peter (b. 1946) earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Northwestern University. He has been serving as Minister of Music at All Saints Church, Chevy Chase, MD since 1988.

During Communion, we hear a quiet and almost hypnotic setting of Psalm 121 (I will lift up my eyes unto the hills) by English composer Noel Rawsthorne (1929 – 2019), a British organist and composer. He became Organist of Liverpool Cathedral from 1955 to 1980. Until 1993, Rawsthorne was Senior Lecturer in Music at St Katharine’s College, Liverpool (now Liverpool Hope University). He received an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Liverpool.
