This particular cyclical genre influx was notable for the resurgence and reformulating of the amateur sleuth; this time remerging as the gifted police consultant, a figure capable of insights that the police could not manage. I term these new shows ‘consultant procedurals’. Consequently, the genre moved away from dealing with the ills of society and instead focused on the mystery of crime. Refocusing the genre gave rise to new issues. Questions are raised about how knowledge is gained and who has the right to it. With the individual consultant spearheading criminal investigation, without official standing, the genre is re-inflected with issues around legitimacy and power. The genre also reengages with age-old questions about the role gender plays in the performance of investigation. With the aim of answering these questions one of the jobs of this thesis is to find a way of analysing genre that accounts for both its larger cyclical, shifting nature and its simultaneously rigid construction of particular conventions.

To achieve this aim, this paper elaborates three definitions of police procedural. The discussion shows that experts have apparently provided a working definition of the police procedural after having identified how the new variant is different from, and yet remains the same as the “parent” genre. While the third definition puts emphasis on the authentic and realistic aspects of the police procedural, the first two definitions can be used as a reference to elaborately discuss the police procedural as a variant or subgenre of the detective genre. The police procedural retains the basic conventional elements of the detective genre—plot and motifs, character, setting, theme, and props, but it twists these elements and turns them into an invention with the intention of keeping the interest of the readers and viewers. Having established itself as a subgenre, the police procedural has grown to become formulaic by creating its own conventions. It is a formula that is generally employed by writers and has come to be expected by readers or viewers. By doing so, the police procedural has helped the detective genre as its “parents” genre stay popular.

    An African American Man in Police Procedural Drama: Black Masculinity Representation on Criminal Minds Sarah Khansa Agharid1, Muhammad Fuad2 {[email protected], [email protected]} 1,2 American Studies, School of Strategic and Global Studies, Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia Abstract. This paper analyses how black masculinity is portrayed, constructed, and performed in a police procedural drama scenario through the character of Derek Morgan in Criminal Minds. The representation of African Americans in this genre is mostly negative. The paper aims to see how the portrayal of Derek Morgan is empowering or stereotyping the representation of black masculinity. Related scenes and dialogues were analyzed using Eder’s clock of character analysis. To some extent, as the only black officer in the team, Derek’s representation is opposite to the typical characteristic of stereotype typically attributed to African American males. Derek is a loving, determined, committed, benevolent, and daring black man. However, this representation of reconstructed black masculinity is perhaps only possible on a television series within the context of police procedural drama as a law enforcer. Meyer* I've never used the whodunit technique, since it is concerned altogether with mystification, which diffuses and unfocuses suspense. It is possible to build up almost unbearable tension in a play or film in which the audience knows who the murderer is all the time, and from the very start they want to scream out to all the other characters in the plot, "Watch out for So-and-So! He's a killer!" There you have the real tenseness and an irresistible desire to know what happens, instead of a group of characters deployed in a human chess problem.
