-The hardest part [about taking over a new program] is creating a culture defensively. »”Getting them to understand how hard they have to play to be successful

-Don’t be a scouting report defense. Don’t change what you do to fit the opponent (you can adjust, but be sure to stick to your principles). Get your team to play hard & consistent and be locked onto what you do.

Transition Defense:

-A man-to-man coach that inherited a team that had grown comfortable playing a lot of zone in the past. Any zone to man adjustment: transition D will be horrendous.

-Drill: “4-on-4 Baseline Touch” begins with 4 defensive players across the line extended and 4 offensive players across the baseline. Coach can call “shot” and the 2 forwards/centers on the defensive team must pause for a 1 count as the coach throws the ball to one of the offensive players to transition. Coach can also do the traditional baseline touch drill where he throws it to one of the players on the baseline and the man across from him sprints to touch the baseline. »Depending on what you want to do: you can have 1 player touch the line on your pass, 2 players touch or no players touch.

-3 players back in transition: make a triangle (1 picks up ball, other 2 are at —in transition you don’t have a man); 2 players back in transition: be in tandem.

-Player behind ball in transition comes into the play at the top of the and is looking to pick up a man at the top of the key or opposite. Too often this player will linger and is content to not get involved in the play.

-, Talk and Matchup

-Versus the roadrunner point guard who really pushes the ball up the floor well: sprint like all hell to get back—get 4 in front of the ball and build a wall.

- Sideline Blitz: great drill in preparation for a team that loves to throw sideline advance passes. »2 defenders start at the elbow with 2 more in the half court circle. Offensive players are situated with 1 at each hash mark and one on each block. A coach holds a ball and hits the point guard on the block who looks to the ballside wing for a sideline advance as the defense retreats back.

-Gauntlet: 2-on-1 + 1 drill. On coach’s go, 1 and 2 attack x1 towards the other end. The coach stands on the baseline holding x2 back momentarily before letting go of his jersey and allowing him to sprint into the play.

-Heat Transition: Disadvantage progession drill: 2-on-13-on-24-on-35-on-45-on-5. Drill starts with a player in white attempting a free throw with 2 players in black lined up in the lane. After ball is shot, it is 2- on-1 back the other way. 2 whites are ready to jump on at the conclusion of the 2-on-1 situation to make it 3-on-2. At the conclusion of the 3-on-2, 2 blacks are ready to jump on to make it 4-on-3. Keep score.

Offense:

-Have a series of plays/actions that you can run out of the same set. » “Family of plays”
