May 15,1999 Dear Colleagues and Guests: Welcome to the 152nd Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. This is the occasion when organized psychiatry displays its might in one of the largest educational, social and political medical gatherings in the world. The theme for 1999 is easy to remember, "The Clinician" I chose this theme because it represents the professional lives of most psychiatrists. I want to pay tribute to the attitudes, the skills and the knowledge of those who see patients day in and day out Research has given precision to our diagnoses and effectiveness to our treatments We are winning the war against anxiety and mood disorders, the psychoses, chemical dependence and the disorders resulting from structural damage to the brain. Psychotherapy and psychotropics are increasingly better targeted. We are going to dialogue about new initiatives in mental health financing. Radical reform is possible with the use of tax exemptions-vouchers, defined contributions (as opposed to the fine benefits), and consolidation of programs to enhance individual control. Our presentations here are going to show that the business community can join us in the protection of the working community. Employees are not costs but assets, the human capital is the best source of profits, and the employers should work better with physicians and not with insurance companies. -

Doctoral Dissertations. 1161. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/1161 Notions of Self and Nation in French Author-Aviators of World War II: From Myth to Ambivalence Christopher Steven Kean, PhD University of Connecticut, 2016 The traditional image of wartime aviators in French culture is an idealized, mythical notion that is inextricably linked with an equally idealized and mythical notion of nationhood. The literary works of three French author-aviators from World War II – Antoine de Saint- Exupéry, Jules Roy, and Romain Gary – reveal an image of the aviator and the writer that operates in a zone between reality and imagination. The purpose of this study is to delineate the elements that make up what I propose is a more complex and even ambivalent image of both individual and nation. Through these three works – Pilote de guerre (Flight to Arras), La Vallée heureuse (The Happy Valley), and La Promesse de l’aube (Promise at Dawn) – this dissertation proposes to uncover not only the figures of individual narratives, but also the figures of “a certain idea of France” during a critical period of that country’s history. -

2007 Annual Report
2007 ANNUAL REPORT NEW YORK • NEW JERSEY • CHICAGO • SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA The All Stars Project, Inc. (ASP) is a non-partisan, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting human development through the use of an innovative performance-based model. The ASP creates outside of school, educational and performing arts activities for tens of thousands of poor and minority young people. It sponsors community and experimental theatre, develops leadership training and pursues volunteer initiatives that build and strengthen communities. The ASP actively promotes supplementary education and the performance-learning model in academic and civic arenas. Dear Friends, Twenty-seven years ago, the All Stars Project, Inc. (ASP) began by producing neighborhood talent shows in a church basement in the South Bronx. Volunteer-driven, unfunded and unrecognized, the All Stars Project invited children from New York City’s poorest neighborhoods to create something together; to put on a show. Young people came. And they just kept on coming. Nearly three decades later, the ASP – now headquartered in New York City at our 42nd Street Performing Arts and Development Center (pictured left) – is still volunteer-driven (our volunteers are our MVP’s), fully funded (100% privately) and widely recognized for the success of our programs and approach. Most importantly, the kids are still coming – in New York and Newark, Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and Boston, Atlanta and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Some have called it ‘grassroots show business.’ In the pages of this 2007 Annual Report, you will read about the performances ASP is producing. -
