On November 12, during the athletes training camp in Lanzarote, BOIC launches its new website www.teambelgium.be

This website shows the efforts that Team Belgium delivers to perform at the Olympic Games of Rio in 2016. Team Belgium, which are of course primarily the athletes. But also you as sport federation, like coaches, family, fans and sponsors, are a vital link in the “Road to Rio”.

How the story of Team Belgium on its way to Rio will look, we don’t decide, you do! Via public messages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram from athletes, federations and leagues, partners … everyone can follow the road to Rio closely.

We make a daily selection of the best, interesting and most inspiring pictures, video’s, links, comments and status updates. Your sport will get its own profile page with links to the website of the federation and leagues. We encourage you to share the daily efforts of your federation on the road to Rio on your (public) social media. We don’t publish messages from profile pages (Facebook) and private accounts (Twitter and Instagram). If you have feedback on a certain topic or message on the website, don’t hesitate to contact us via [email protected].

2/11/2014 Omega Pharma Run, Ronny De Cocker pushes wheelchair during half marathon Last weekend the fifth edition of the Omega Pharma Run was held. A mass run where everybody is welcome. The proceeds go to charity. On the anniversary edition yesterday more than 3.000 runners took part. Marc Coucke, the CEO of Omega Pharma, took the challenge five years ago to run a half marathon. At that moment the Omega Pharma Run was created. The teams can choose between different distances. Such a mass event can only be organized with the support of many volunteers. The runners participating in the Omega Pharma Run have prepared well. Ronny De Cocker runs the half marathon while pushing the wheelchair of Antonio Ventriglia. Ronny, chairman, of the VVR, does this for a good cause: the association NEMA, a self-help group that commits to help people with neuromuscular diseases since 1987. Lahlal El Hassane, an athlete with Moroccan roots living in Brussels, is lead runner the whole race in the half marathon. He wins the race in a new course record: 1h 7m and 15 seconds.

Photo - Interview Ronny and Antonio with Marc Coucke Ronny’s reaction during an interview on AVS after the marathon: to put muscle disease in the spotlight I’ve pushed a wheelchair during the half marathon. Because we still have the luxury to be able to sport, but they haven’t. And therefore I would like these people to be recognized, Antonio: such initiatives to bring attention to NEMA and the ALS League, should occur more! I take my hat off to the stunning performance of Ronny! zetten.

Ronny will also participate in the Marathon des Sables in April next year, he will keep us posted of his preparations regularly: Ronny De Cocker, chairman of the VVR, will participate in the Marathon des Sables in April next year, he will regularly inform us about his progressions, here below he tells his story:

I ran my first marathon in 2002 and I since then participated in 12, including Barcelona, New York, , , Milan and finally Berlin and this last in my best time so far: 2h42m31. Five years ago I first became acquainted with Marathon des Sables in the program Tomtesterom by Tom Waes, and I thought … I also want to participate.

Next year its finally there, I am 50 years and as a gift I treat myself to participate at MDS! This is one of the toughest marathons in the world, 250kms through the Moroccan desserts in 7 days. We leave on Friday April 3rd 2015 with 1.300 teams from Paris towards adventure. Once landed we’re all one buses towards the tent camp, on the way we’ll get our road book with the different stages that await us. It will be very quiet on the bus …

Saturday is the briefing and control of the backpacks, because we have to provide ourselves with food and material (sleeping bags, sleeping mat, gels, compass, night light, …) for 7 days. The organisation simply provides the tent camps and water supply. Therefore there are no showers and toilets. The weight of the back pack is between 10 to 12 kg.

Sunday the first stage starts, a 30 km introduction to the dessert. Monday stage 2, 40 km, it’s getting heavier… Stage 3 is the Queen’s Song, 84 km!! Wednesday we get a rest to take care of our muscles and possible wounds. Stage 4 is a marathon, another 42 km in the dessert. Friday 30 km and Saturday another 20 km to close it. Sunday and Monday we may take two days at a hotel to recover from our adventure. On April 13, return to Paris to tell the story of our adventure in all scents and colours at home.

The fact is it’s a tradition to match the effort to a good cause and I chose Nema. This is a Flemish association for people with neuromuscular disease (muscle diseases). I came in contact with this association via my daughter Jolien who is studying orthopedagogy and assists this people during the weekend in her student job. There is a Facebook page 'Ronny loopt Marathon des Sables voor Nema' where we gather as many likes as possible to attract sponsors.

To promote this action I have pushed an ALS-Patient in a wheelchair on the Omega Pharma half marathon on October 26 (see ‘Hot of the press’). There is also a betting contest where you can venture a guess for € 2,5 (1 cent per km I walk) at what time I’ll end the MDS. There are prizes provided for the teams and they will be awarded on the closing fundraising on 2 May 2015.

8+9/11/2014 Eveline Peleman was invited to take part in the Silver Skiff 2014 in Turin 8 and 9 November.! The Executive Committee of FISA has selected Patrick Rombaut to replace John Boultbee on the FISA Executive Committee starting 1 January 2015. This casual vacancy appointment is valid, according to Article 52, until the next Congress in Aiguebelette. The procedure for the congress will follow Article 48 for your reference.
