It charts the growth of digital platforms and historicizes the commercial and geopolitical itinerations linking cultural production in Japan, South Korea, and China. It locates data fandom as an integral part of the popular music industries reconfigured by digital social media platforms; a structural change from the production-to-consumption ‘supply chain’ model of the recording era towards emergent circuits of content that integrate industries and audiences. -

Domestic Hallyu: K-Pop Metatexts and the Media's Self-Reflexive Gesture
International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 2308–2331 1932–8036/20170005 Domestic Hallyu: K-Pop Metatexts and the Media’s Self-Reflexive Gesture MICHELLE CHO1 McGill University, Canada Television serves as a crucial medium for shaping the South Korean public’s response to the success of hallyu, or the Korean Wave, in news reports, variety shows, and celebrity interview programs. Further, in the last decade, several K-pop idols have been cast in serial narrative television shows that fictionalize hallyu creative industries. These metatextual shows domesticate transnational idol pop celebrities by contributing layers of televisual intimacy to their star personae and by seeming to expose the inner workings of the entertainment industries. This essay focuses on two notable examples, Dream High (2011, KBS2) and Answer Me 1997 (2012, tvN), to consider what this proliferation of popular narratives about media production and reception on South Korean television signifies. I argue that the intertextual presentation of K-pop on Korean television negotiates a complex relationship between popular culture and public culture in South Korea. The metatextual relay revealed in these shows—what I characterize as the media’s self-reflexive critical gesture—provides access to the ideological impasses of the attempt to produce intimate national publics through globalized contents. Keywords: metatextuality, television, K-drama, K-pop, hallyu, Korean Wave If the ideological function of mass culture is understood as a process whereby otherwise dangerous and protopolitical impulses are “managed” and defused, rechanneled and offered spurious objects, then some preliminary step must also be theorized in which these same impulses—the raw material upon which the process works—are initially awakened within the very text that seeks to still them. -

GLOBAL AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION IN THE PRUDUCTION AND CONSUMPTION OF GANGNAM STYLE by SOOKEUNG JUNG Under the Direction of Professor Hongmei Li ABSTRACT This thesis examines the cultural consumption of the Korean music video Gangnam Style in the broader context of the increasing popularity of Korean popular content, often called the Korean Wave, and of complex conditions of transnational consumption. Specifically, it in- vestigates why the music video Gangnam Style gained popularity not only in East Asia but also over the world, how it is circulated, and what conditions contribute to its success. It focuses on the role of the networked audiences and the interactions between the networked audiences and mainstream media through a chronological analysis on the distribution and reproduction process of Gangnam Style on YouTube. Through the case study of Gangman Style, this thesis attempts to rethink the established globalization theories and to suggest new perspective of cultural circula- tion in the globalized and digitalized media environment. -

WALTER FEWKES I INTRODUCTION Before their discovery the aboriginal inhabitants of the West In- dies had developed a culture which was peculiar, and only distantly related to that of the mainland of America. The peculiarities of this culture are indicated by characteristic stone objects, the geo- graphical distribution of which determines its boundaries. The centers of this peculiar Antillean culture were Porto Rico and Santo Domingo, but its influence was felt more or less strongly throughout all the West Indian islands. Porto Rico has furnished the student of prehistoric life two dis- tinctive types of polished stone objects, one of which is commonly called the stone collar, the other the tripointed idol. We occasion- allv rind representatives of these types on the neighboring islands, but as they never occur in such abundance nor so elaborate!) made as those of Porto Rico, we are justified in regarding them as having originated on the latter island. While it is difficult to enumerate the stone collars of Porto Rico, there is no doubt that the number collected on that island exceeds that of all the other Antilles. The Latimer collection in the Na- tional Museum at Washington had originally thirty-five specimens. A few have been taken from this collection, but fourteen have been added to it by my expeditions of 1902-1903. The American Mu- seum of Natural History in New York also has many stone collars, including six complete specimens and several fragments, mentioned 1 in the. catalogne of his collection by Dr. -

He received a B.A. in Art History from Oberlin College in 1996 and a M.A. in Art History from the University of Chicago in 1997. His master’s thesis, “The Accademia degli Oziosi: Spanish Power and Neapolitan Culture in Southern Italy, c. 1600-50,” was written under the supervision of Ingrid D. Rowland and Thomas Cummins. Before coming to Brown, Mario worked as a free-lance editor for La Rivista dei Libri and served on the editorial staff of the New York Review of Books. He also worked on the curatorial staff of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum where he translated the exhibition catalogue Raphael, Cellini and a Renaissance Banker: The Patronage of Bindo Altoviti (Milan: Electa, 2003) and curated the exhibition Off the Wall: New Perspectives on Early Italian Art in the Gardner Museum (2004). While at Brown, Mario has received financial support from the Graduate School, the Department of History of Art and Architecture, and the Program in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies. From 2005-2006, he worked in the Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. In 2007-2008, he received the J. M.
