WALTER FEWKES I INTRODUCTION Before their discovery the aboriginal inhabitants of the West In- dies had developed a culture which was peculiar, and only distantly related to that of the mainland of America. The peculiarities of this culture are indicated by characteristic stone objects, the geo- graphical distribution of which determines its boundaries. The centers of this peculiar Antillean culture were Porto Rico and Santo Domingo, but its influence was felt more or less strongly throughout all the West Indian islands. Porto Rico has furnished the student of prehistoric life two dis- tinctive types of polished stone objects, one of which is commonly called the stone collar, the other the tripointed idol. We occasion- allv rind representatives of these types on the neighboring islands, but as they never occur in such abundance nor so elaborate!) made as those of Porto Rico, we are justified in regarding them as having originated on the latter island. While it is difficult to enumerate the stone collars of Porto Rico, there is no doubt that the number collected on that island exceeds that of all the other Antilles. The Latimer collection in the Na- tional Museum at Washington had originally thirty-five specimens. A few have been taken from this collection, but fourteen have been added to it by my expeditions of 1902-1903. The American Mu- seum of Natural History in New York also has many stone collars, including six complete specimens and several fragments, mentioned 1 in the. catalogne of his collection by Dr. -

He received a B.A. in Art History from Oberlin College in 1996 and a M.A. in Art History from the University of Chicago in 1997. His master’s thesis, “The Accademia degli Oziosi: Spanish Power and Neapolitan Culture in Southern Italy, c. 1600-50,” was written under the supervision of Ingrid D. Rowland and Thomas Cummins. Before coming to Brown, Mario worked as a free-lance editor for La Rivista dei Libri and served on the editorial staff of the New York Review of Books. He also worked on the curatorial staff of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum where he translated the exhibition catalogue Raphael, Cellini and a Renaissance Banker: The Patronage of Bindo Altoviti (Milan: Electa, 2003) and curated the exhibition Off the Wall: New Perspectives on Early Italian Art in the Gardner Museum (2004). While at Brown, Mario has received financial support from the Graduate School, the Department of History of Art and Architecture, and the Program in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies. From 2005-2006, he worked in the Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. In 2007-2008, he received the J. M. Patterson Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Donald McQuarie Dr. Ewart Skinner © 2007 Carolyn Lea All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Ellen Berry, Advisor This is a polemical dissertation which seeks to serve as an intervention into the theoretical debates and tensions within cultural studies. These debates, which have taken place over the last few decades, have centered on the populist bent within cultural studies, the turn away from the concerns of political economy, and the influence of French theories that emphasize signification, play, and relativism. At stake in these debates is our way of understanding the world and imagining it differently. I argue that the celebratory direction found in much of the work by cultural studies scholars in which resistance, subversion and transgression are located in all things popular has led to an expressivist politics which lacks explanatory power and is symptomatic of a loss of political will. This dissertation critiques three particular directions that exemplify the celebratory turn: claims regarding transgression; claims regarding audience activity; and celebratory accounts of consumption. Chapter one provides an exposition of the debates that have plagued cultural studies, laying the ground for later arguments. Chapter two provides an introduction to reality television which is enlisted as a cultural symptom through which to interrogate weaknesses in theoretical positions (in chapters three through five) adopted by cultural studies scholars and strengths in alternative theoretical legacies. -

How American Idol Constructs Celebrity, Collective Identity, and American Discourses
AMERICAN IDEAL: HOW AMERICAN IDOL CONSTRUCTS CELEBRITY, COLLECTIVE IDENTITY, AND AMERICAN DISCOURSES A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Amanda Scheiner McClain May, 2010 i © Copyright 2010 by Amanda Scheiner McClain All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a three-pronged study examining American themes, celebrity, and collective identity associated with the television program American Idol. The study includes discourse analyses of the first seven seasons of the program, of the season seven official American Idol message boards, and of the 2002 and 2008 show press coverage. The American themes included a rags-to-riches narrative, archetypes, and celebrity. The discourse-formed archetypes indicate which archetypes people of varied races may inhabit, who may be sexual, and what kinds of sexuality are permitted. On the show emotional exhibitions, archetypal resonance, and talent create a seemingly authentic celebrity while discourse positioning confirms this celebrity. The show also fostered a complication-free national American collective identity through the show discourse, while the online message boards facilitated the formation of two types of collective identities: a large group of American Idol fans and smaller contestant-affiliated fan groups. Finally, the press coverage study found two overtones present in the 2002 coverage, derision and awe, which were absent in the 2008 coverage. The primary reasons for this absence may be reluctance to criticize an immensely popular show and that the American Idol success was no longer surprising by 2008. By 2008, American Idol was so ingrained within American culture that to deride it was to critique America itself. -
