    WOMEN’S MAGAZINES AND THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF PRINT AND READING CULTURE IN INTERWAR JAPAN by Shiho Maeshima A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2016 © Shiho Maeshima, 2016 Abstract This dissertation reconsiders the significance of a periodical genre hitherto marginalized in academia, namely, the Japanese mass-market women’s magazine, in the history of print/reading culture in modern Japan. The study also aims to investigate the interrelations among magazine genres, gender categories, and the formation of cultural hierarchy. Analysis of diverse periodicals from the late 19th century to the 1930s, their contemporary commentaries and various surveys reveals that, around the turn of the 20th century, magazine genres became increasingly gendered in terms of their formats, editing styles, content, and readership: magazines for adults evolved into either “serious” general magazines for men concerning “public” matters or “vulgar” women’s magazines on “light” issues related to the “domestic” sphere. It was the latter magazine genre that led to the democratization of print/reading culture in interwar Japan. Inclusion of various article genres written in highly colloquial styles, extensive use of visuals, stress on entertainment and people’s private lives, and increasing collaboration with other industries, were to become common practices among Japanese periodicals after WWII. The new editing style also contributed to the spread of a new reading style in Japan. With its accessible editorial and promotional styles, the interwar mass-market women’s magazine attracted readers from a wide range of ages and social classes, including men, and functioned as the “transfeminized” entertaining home magazine.

The first half of the term will focus on the study of nōgaku, Japan’s performing art combining dance, drama, poetry, mask and costumes through literary and performance analysis. After spring break, the course will shift its focus to kabuki and bunraku. The course is led by Diego Pellecchia (nō scholar and practitioner) and Galia Todorova Petkova (specialist in Japanese performing arts and gender). Students will learn about the history and aesthetic conventions of traditional performing arts, presented as living traditions in the context of contemporary Japanese society, using a combination of textual and audiovisual materials. The course will provide ample opportunities to attend performances, visit artisans’ laboratories, and participate in workshops with renown Japanese artists, to complement a solid academic background about the arts with a more direct, hands- on approach to the topics covered. I argue that the novel manages to capture the oppressive nature of its structures not by attempting to represent them directly but instead by telling the stories of individuals who feel especially alienated from them. These characters largely fail to connect with one another in any lasting way, but their brief encounters, some of which take place in person, others through reading, have pride of place in a text that, I propose, constitutes a brief on behalf of the marginal and the forgotten in its overall form: it is an example of the novel as an ever-expanding, multitudinous crowd; it strives to preserve the singularity of each of its members while at the same time suggesting that the differences between them are less important than their shared presence within a single narrative whole.

Morse FAY 106 (x2282) [email protected] From Edo to Tokyo: Later Japanese Art The Course This class will survey Japanese art from the late sixteenth century to the present focusing primarily on cultural developments in Japan=s most important early modern and modern city Edo/Tokyo. Edo was first founded as a provincial garrison by the Tokugawa military clan, but was transformed into a center of political power in Japan when they consolidated their rule the early seventeenth century. The city was transformed again when it was made the capital in 1868 and renamed Tokyo as Japan initiated a rapid program of Westernization. Another transformation took place when the city was rebuilt after the destruction of the Second World War. Contemporary developers and city planners are trying to transform the city yet again at the start of the new millennium. The course will first explore the cultural developments in the milieu of the new city that resulted from constant competition between the military and merchants and then focus on the development of new artistic forms in response to the constantly changing urban environment. Among the topics that will be covered are the woodblock prints and paintings depicting the theater and brothel districts; the adoption of Western-style art forms in the second half of the nineteenth century; and the definition of a contemporary Japanese aesthetic in the city following the Second World War. The class will meet three times a week (MWF) at 10:00 in Fayerweather 113. The lectures and assigned readings have been selected to provide a variety of perspectives to help you form your own understanding of the history and the art of Edo/Tokyo.
