The Park Keeper 1 ‘Most of us remember the park keeper of the past. More often than not a man, uniformed, close to retirement age, and – in the mind’s eye at least – carrying a pointed stick for collecting litter. Thames Path Walk Section 2 North Bank Albert Bridge to Tower Bridge
Thames Path Walk With the Thames on the right, set off along the Chelsea Embankment past Section 2 north bank the plaque to Victorian engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, who also created the Victoria and Albert Embankments. His plan reclaimed land from the Albert Bridge to Tower Bridge river to accommodate a new road with sewers beneath - until then, sewage had drained straight into the Thames and disease was rife in the city. Carry on past the junction with Royal Hospital Road, to peek into the walled garden of the Chelsea Physic Garden. Historical Perspectives of Urban Drainage Steven J. Burian* and Findlay G. Edwards* *Assistant Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, University of Arkansas, 4190 Bell Engineering Center, Fayetteville, AR 72701 USA, Phone: (479) 575-4182; [email protected] / [email protected] Abstract Historically, urban drainage systems have been viewed with various perspectives. During different time periods and in different locations, urban drainage has been considered a vital natural resource, a convenient cleansing mechanism, an efficient waste transport medium, a flooding concern, a nuisance wastewater, and a transmitter of disease. In general, climate, topography, geology, scientific knowledge, engineering and construction capabilities, societal values, religious beliefs, and other factors have influenced the local perspective of urban drainage. For as long as humans have been constructing cities these factors have guided and constrained the development of urban drainage solutions. Historical accounts provide glimpses of many interesting and unique urban drainage techniques. This paper will highlight several of these techniques dating from as early as 3000 BC to as recently as the twentieth century. For each example discussed, the overriding perspective of urban drainage for that particular time and place is identified. The presentation will follow a chronological path with the examples categorized into the following four time periods: (1) ancient civilizations, (2) Roman Empire, (3) Post-Roman era to the nineteenth century, and (4) modern day. The paper culminates with a brief summary of the present day perspective of urban drainage. Introduction The relation of modern engineering to ancient engineering is difficult to comprehend considering that modern engineering is so highly specialized and technologically advanced. -

Victoria Embankment Foreshore Hoarding Commission 1 Introduction ‘The Thames Wunderkammer: Tales from Victoria Embankment in Two Parts’, 2017, by Simon Roberts, commissioned by Tideway This is a temporary commission located on the Thames Tideway Tunnel construction site hoardings at Victoria Embankment, 2017-19. Responding to the rich heritage of the Victoria Embankment, Simon Roberts has created a metaphorical ‘cabinet of curiosities’ along two 25- metre foreshore hoardings. Roberts describes his approach as an ‘aesthetic excavation of the area’, creating an artwork that reflects the literal and metaphorical layering of the landscape, in which objects from the past and present are juxtaposed to evoke new meanings. Monumental statues are placed alongside items that are more ordinary; diverse elements, both man-made and natural, co-exist in new ways. All these components symbolise the landscape’s complex history, culture, geology, and development. We conserve and enhance the natural environment for its intrinsic value, iithe wellbeing and enjoyment of people, and the economic prosperity it brings. Parks, People and Nature A guide to enhancing natural habitats in London’s parks and green spaces in a changing climate Introduction My vision for London is of a green city, and a fair city, where everyone has access to a high quality green space in which wildlife can be encountered close to where they live and work. London has some of the Ýnest parks of any capital city in the world. Yet it also has some areas lacking in green space, and many more where the quality of the green spaces could be better. This booklet provides a valuable practical guide on how to improve access to nature in parks and green spaces, complimenting my London Plan Implementation Report on Improving LondonersÔ access to nature. Appropriate design and management of our parks and green spaces will be one of the key challenges that will enable the City to adapt to climate change. Park managers need to be working now to plant the trees that will provide shade for a much warmer city in the 2080s. We also need to start thinking now how our parks can help in addressing broader environmental challenges such as Þood risk management. -

THE JOURNAL OF U THE LONDON UNDERGROUND RAILWAY SOCIETY I ssue No 104 Volume 9 No 8 August 1970 N EVEN GREATER POWER FAILURE CHAOS At 17.1 5 on Monday 6t h July 1970, at the height of the evening r ush hour, a pr otective relay operating a D circuit breaker t r i pped t oo soon and effectively cut off t he power supply t o a very l arge section of the central part of the Undergr ound. The only secti ons not affected at all were the Met r opo l i t an north of Bake r Street E (which is s upplied from the Nat i onal Grid) and the Victoria Line (which i s fed by a direct cabl e from Lots Road). Some sections were back in service fairly soon, but others, notably he eastern part of the Central R Line were out of action for a l ong time. It seems that most services were interrupted for about fifty minutes, and that all services were running normally again by 19.000 G The circuit breaker concerned was at Greenwich Power Station, and its failure broke the link between Greenwich and Lots Road, and me ant effectively that power generated at both these s tations could not be f ed to the system. R There are two extremely disqui eting features of this failure; communications with staff and passengers broke down compl etely, resul ting in numerous stations becoming dangerously overcrowded and, much more serious, o almost a quarter of a million passengers being trapped in s tationary trains in the tunnels at a time when the temperature outside was 77°F - no-one seems t o know what U the temperature rose t o in the trains. -

BANKSIDE POWER STATION: PLANNING, POLITICS AND POLLUTION Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Stephen Andrew Murray Centre for Urban History University of Leicester 2014 Bankside Power Station ii Bankside Power Station: Planning, Politics and Pollution Stephen Andrew Murray Abstract Electricity has been a feature of the British urban landscape since the 1890s. Yet there are few accounts of urban electricity undertakings or their generating stations. This history of Bankside power station uses government and company records to analyse the supply, development and use of electricity in the City of London, and the political, economic and social contexts in which the power station was planned, designed and operated. The close-focus adopted reveals issues that are not identified in, or are qualifying or counter-examples to, the existing macro-scale accounts of the wider electricity industry. Contrary to the perceived backwardness of the industry in the inter-war period this study demonstrates that Bankside was part of an efficient and profitable private company which was increasingly subject to bureaucratic centralised control. Significant decision-making processes are examined including post-war urban planning by local and central government and technological decision-making in the electricity industry. The study contributes to the history of technology and the environment through an analysis of the technologies that were proposed or deployed at the post-war power station, including those intended to mitigate its impact, together with an examination of their long-term effectiveness. Bankside made a valuable contribution to electricity supplies in London until the 1973 Middle East oil crisis compromised its economic viability. -
