Januar 2018 An intimate evening with Bryan Ferry Fondation Beyeler und Bayer präsentieren den Weltstar live und hautnah Bryan Ferry (*1945), legendärer Musiker, Gründungsmitglied und Leadsänger der englischen Band Roxy Music tritt am 17. März 2018 um 18.30 Uhr mit seiner Band exklusiv in der Fondation Beyeler auf. Vor seinem akustischen Set spricht Ferry mit dem Autor und Kunstkritiker Michael Bracewell. Nach dem sensationellen Erfolg mit Roxy Music in den frühen 1970er Jahren startete Ferry in den 1980er Jahren seine Solokarriere. Mit seiner unverkennbaren Stimme verführte er ganze Generationen. Wie keinem anderen ist es ihm gelungen, die Kraft von Sinatra, die Ausstrahlung von Gainsbourg und die Intensität von Lou Reed zu vereinen und daraus eine eigene Verve zu entwickeln, die ihn bis heute zu den wichtigsten und innovativsten Sängern und Songschreibern der Popkultur macht. Als ehemaliger Student der Bildenden Kunst ist Ferry seither eng in der Kunstszene verwurzelt, bekennender Kunstliebhaber und selber Sammler. In der Fondation Beyeler spricht Bryan Ferry erst mit dem britischen Kunstkritiker, Autor und langjährigen Freund Michael Bracewell. Bracewell hat verschiedene Romane veröffentlicht, darunter Roxy Music: Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, Art, Ideas and Fashion (2005). Live und unplugged präsentiert Ferry dann im Anschluss sein akustisches Set in Begleitung seiner Band. „An intimate evening with“ ist eine Konzertreihe präsentiert von der Fondation Beyeler und Bayer. In dieser Reihe treten Musikerinnen und Musiker auf, die Pop- oder Rockgeschichte geschrieben und einen persönlichen Bezug zur bildenden Kunst haben. In der Fondation Beyeler erleben die Zuschauer diese Künstler in der Atmosphäre des Museums hautnah und intim. Nach den imponierenden Auftritten von Patti Smith 2015 und John Cale 2016 folgt nun mit Bryan Ferry ein weiterer grossartiger Künstler von internationalem Ruhm. Big data offers many opportunities for official statistics: for example increased resolution, better timeliness, and new statistical outputs. But there are also many challenges: uncontrolled changes in sources that threaten continuity, lack of identifiers that impedes linking to population frames, and data that refers only indirectly to phenomena of statistical interest. We discuss two approaches to deal with these challenges and opportunities. First, we may accept big data for what they are: an imperfect, yet timely, indicator of phenomena in society. These data exist and that’s why they are interesting. Secondly, we may extend this approach by explicit modelling. New methods like machine-learning techniques can be considered alongside more traditional methods like Bayesian techniques. National statistical institutes have always been reluctant to use models, apart from specific cases like small-area estimates. Based on the experience at Statistics Netherlands we argue that NSIs should not be afraid to use models, provided that their use is documented and made transparent to users. Moreover, the primary purpose of an NSI is to describe society; we should refrain from making forecasts.     CD Review: Bryan Ferry’s Avonmore Last Monday, former Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry released his 15th studio album, Avonmore. The album was produced by longtime Roxy Music/Ferry associate, Rhett Davies, but he also got some help from a long list of talented musicians, most notably Nile Rodgers of Chic (and everything lately) and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Nile Rodgers makes his influence known not only by his signature funky, choppy guitar sound that is featured in most of the songs, but an overall sleek tone to the songs and the production. The title track has a driving disco backbeat with impressive bass fills sprinkled throughout that can only be Flea. But occasionally the lushness goes a little too far. “A Special Kind of Guy,” for example, takes the smoothness to a sickly sweet parody level, complete with some tepid wah-wah guitar in the background. Perhaps the overproduction is due to an overblown cast of characters; on “Loop De Li” alone there appears Nile Rodgers, Johnny Marr, well-known blues guitarist Neil Hubbard, Sex Pistols axeman Steve Jones, session guitarist David Williams, and jazz legend Marcus Miller on bass, and that’s not even everybody playing a guitar. Ferry’s status as a UK national treasure is definitely secure, but it seems like he may be a little too focused on partying with rockstars. One of the elements (other than the top-tier musicians) that made Roxy Music so special in the ’70s was Ferry’s somehow-masculine cooing vocal technique. It’s undeniable that age isn’t the best thing for your vocals; unless you’re some kind of immortal weirdo like James Taylor, you probably won’t be hitting the high notes you did in your 20s when you’re 69 (Ferry’s age).
