PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Should Big Data Change the Modelling Paradigm in Official Statistics?
Statistical Journal of the IAOS 31 (2015) 193–202 193 DOI 10.3233/SJI-150892 IOS Press “Re-make/Re-model”: Should big data change the modelling paradigm in official statistics?1 Barteld Braaksmaa,∗ and Kees Zeelenbergb aInnovation Program, Statistics Netherlands, 2490 HA Den Haag, The Netherlands bMethods and Statistical Policies, Statistics Netherlands, 2490 HA Den Haag, The Netherlands Abstract. Big data offers many opportunities for official statistics: for example increased resolution, better timeliness, and new statistical outputs. But there are also many challenges: uncontrolled changes in sources that threaten continuity, lack of identifiers that impedes linking to population frames, and data that refers only indirectly to phenomena of statistical interest. We discuss two approaches to deal with these challenges and opportunities. First, we may accept big data for what they are: an imperfect, yet timely, indicator of phenomena in society. These data exist and that’s why they are interesting. Secondly, we may extend this approach by explicit modelling. New methods like machine-learning techniques can be considered alongside more traditional methods like Bayesian techniques. National statistical institutes have always been reluctant to use models, apart from specific cases like small-area estimates. Based on the experience at Statistics Netherlands we argue that NSIs should not be afraid to use models, provided that their use is documented and made transparent to users. Moreover, the primary purpose of an NSI is to describe society; we should refrain from making forecasts. The models used should therefore rely on actually observed data and they should be validated extensively. Keywords: Big data, model-based statistics 1.

  • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.

Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. Over the past few decades Louisville, Kentucky, has quietly constructed one of the strongest music scenes in the country. Check out a few of the city’s most popular acts as well as a couple of newcomers. My Morning Jacket My Morning Jacket are perhaps the biggest band from Louisville, Kentucky, in the past decade—and the only band we know of that can unite jam band fanatics, indie rock purists, and classic rock enthusiasts alike. While all of the band’s albums are stellar, we recommend checking out their breakthrough 2003 album It Still Moves, which features “One Big Holiday,” a song that can be considered the “Free Bird” for the iTunes generation. Oh, and if that doesn’t impress you, Netflix a copy of their live DVD Okonokos, which beautifully showcases the cinematic grandeur of the band’s live performances. 1 of 4 2/25/2008 12:57 PM Print http://www.gibson.com/en%2Dus/Print/?PrintAliasPath=/en-us/Lifestyle... VHS Or Beta Like all great scenes, the Louisville music community is extremely incestuous. In fact, My Morning Jacket’s guitarists Jim James and Carl Broemel both guest star on VHS Or Beta’s latest album Bring On the Comments. That’s not to say that the bands sound the same—VHS Or Beta’s dance-influenced rock jams are more at home in a trance club setting than the Burning Man festival—but both acts have successfully elbowed aside any genre restrictions and helped to unite seemingly disparate scenes with their music.

  • Bryan Ferry Till Furuvik I Maj 2020
