Indie Mixtape HQ Is the Third 2011
:: View email as a web page :: In conversation, Phoebe Bridgers speaks in a deadpan SoCal accent and punctuates her blunt and hilarious observations with generous amounts of curse words. She sounds, in other words, utterly unlike her music, which tends to be quiet, contemplative, and gorgeous. Because of her gently murmuring vocal style — "I don’t sing with a lot of emotion, it’s almost an apathetic singing voice," she confesses — Bridgers tends to be cast as yet another sad-sack singer-songwriter out to jerk every last one of your tears. It’s precisely that image that made her 2017 debut Stranger In The Alps a slow-burn sensation, setting in motion a promising career that was further bolstered by her participation in two indie supergroups: Boygenius (with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker) and Better Oblivion Community Center (with Conor Oberst). On her latest album, Punisher, due out on Friday, Bridgers goes deeper and weirder, writing with uncommon insight about the millennial condition. Check out Uproxx’s interview with her here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" And The Beginning Of The 21st Century OPENING TRACKS HAIM This infectious and frequently canny pop-rock trio is known for making fun sing-along jams with splashy choruses that evoke the glory years of FM and Top 40 radio. They also have a good sense of humor, as evidenced by the title of their forthcoming LP due next week, Women In Music Pt. III. LISTEN MICHAEL STIPE KHRUANGBIN The venerable R.E.M. -
Cool Music Scene: Louisville, Kentucky
Print http://www.gibson.com/en%2Dus/Print/?PrintAliasPath=/en-us/Lifestyle... Cool Music Scene: Louisville, Kentucky Jonah Bayer | 02.21.2008 Forget about Seattle or Brooklyn. Over the past few decades Louisville, Kentucky, has quietly constructed one of the strongest music scenes in the country. Check out a few of the city’s most popular acts as well as a couple of newcomers. My Morning Jacket My Morning Jacket are perhaps the biggest band from Louisville, Kentucky, in the past decade—and the only band we know of that can unite jam band fanatics, indie rock purists, and classic rock enthusiasts alike. While all of the band’s albums are stellar, we recommend checking out their breakthrough 2003 album It Still Moves, which features “One Big Holiday,” a song that can be considered the “Free Bird” for the iTunes generation. Oh, and if that doesn’t impress you, Netflix a copy of their live DVD Okonokos, which beautifully showcases the cinematic grandeur of the band’s live performances. 1 of 4 2/25/2008 12:57 PM Print http://www.gibson.com/en%2Dus/Print/?PrintAliasPath=/en-us/Lifestyle... VHS Or Beta Like all great scenes, the Louisville music community is extremely incestuous. In fact, My Morning Jacket’s guitarists Jim James and Carl Broemel both guest star on VHS Or Beta’s latest album Bring On the Comments. That’s not to say that the bands sound the same—VHS Or Beta’s dance-influenced rock jams are more at home in a trance club setting than the Burning Man festival—but both acts have successfully elbowed aside any genre restrictions and helped to unite seemingly disparate scenes with their music. -
Indie Mixtape 20 Q&A Is with Del Paxton, Who Just Wish That People Would Think Their Band Was from the '90S
:: View email as a web page :: On Friday, My Morning Jacket finally released The Waterfall II, an album recorded in the mid-2010s. On The Waterfall, My Morning Jacket sounded determined to remind fans of the monolithic jams they made their name with in the ’00s. The sequel, however, carries no such pretenses. Even the hardest rocking track, “Wasted,” which settles on a surly guitar groove accented with punchy horns, feels more like an invitation to explore the darkest corners of innerspace than a call to party. In that way, The Waterfall II feels (apologies for using a corny term) more honest. Much of the record is composed of bleary-eyed, pedal steel-laced ballads that dwell ruefully on loss and aspire gorgeously to a state of healing, creating an all-too-relatable vibe of heartsick restlessness driven by a desperate desire to believe that tomorrow will somehow be better. So we guess it really is relevant to our endless now after all. Read Uproxx’s review here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" And The Beginning Of The 21st Century PS: Was this email forwarded to you? What did you hear, my darling young one?” -Bob Dylan, “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall,” 1963 In the midst of victorious rhetoric from the government, disturbing insight from the news media, and chaos from the protests, people heard the music of the Vietnam War era. The 1960s was known as a time of change, ranging from revised social norms to changing political stances to new popular music. Everyone seemed to have something to say about the war, musicians being no exception. The folk revival in the 1960s introduced young listeners to a different sound, one of rebellion and critical thought about their country.
