The faunas exhibit major changes within the Namurian in the Chokerian {HI), Alportian (H2) and Kinderscoutian (Ri) sub-stages involving the appearance of new species and genera and the disappearance of many pre-existing ones. These changes take place at approximately the position of the Mississippian- Pennsylvanian boundary in North America. The palaeontology of these faunas is dealt with in detail and 47 species and sub-species have been recognised amongst which Angulodus simplex, Lonchodina bischoffi, Idiognathoides sulcata sulcata, Idiognathoides sulcata parva, Idiognathoides minuta, Streptognathodus lateralis and Gnathodus bilineatus bollandensis are considered new.

  • Fluorescent Minerals from Belgian Localities
Fluorescent minerals from Belgian localities In the collection of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences Richard Loyens [email protected] Antwerp, 2014 translation Vic Vanrusselt Being a collector of Belgian minerals and having a special interest in fluorescence, I went on a personal quest to find out how many different species of fluorescent minerals can be found within the borders of the country I call home, Belgium. As a member of the MKA and the FMS, I, armed with my trusty UV light, had the privilege of investigating other people’s collections up close. However, the total number of fluorescent species I ended up with was rather low. Moreover, the number of species that these people had personally collected was also very limited, even though the literature clearly stated that several more species were to be – or once had been – found in Belgium. That is why I hatched the idea to make a complete list of Belgian mineral species that (could) exhibit fluorescence. It would only be a matter of finding an extensive collection to do my fluorescence research on. That is when the RBINS’ collection came into view. In 1991, I contacted Professor R. Van Tassel, who at that time was associated with the mineralogy department of that institute. Professor Van Tassel referred me to Michel Deliens, the then curator of the institute’s mineral collection. After a few meetings and after explaining to him what I wanted to achieve, I myself, together with a few of my fellow “fluorescence aficionados”, got permission to do our research on the RBINS’ collection of Belgian minerals.

EDITORIAL “Under the leadership of his command, Captain- Commander Lentrée has opposed the enemy attacks with a valiant defense, in which the garrison showed bravery and firmness. The fortified structure only fell after the complete destruction of all its cupolas by enemy artillery”. Fort of Saint Héribet, Province of Namur, 1919 (Citation in the Order of the Army). The First World War has left traces of violence and 3 suffering, but also of support and solidarity, and it left a long-lasting imprint in History. The traces of the conflict across the province, though often overlooked, are very present. Cemeteries, forts, headstones, memorials, street names or places invite the visitor, regardless of age or nationality, to get back into history, to touch the names of victims engraved in marble and set in stone with his fingers. Through this contribution, the Province of Namur and its Tourism Federation want to commemorate this part of history that is becoming eroded by time. The making of this guide is part of the numerous regional, local, provincial, and federal projects that will emerge in the commemoration events from 2014 to 2018, as as many actions against oblivion: exhibitions, shows, activities for the youth, educational trips, etc. In decades to come, the memory of those, known and unknown, who died for peace, will be honored. It is for this same peace that the Province of Namur is mobilizing now. The provincial College INTRODUCTION Between 1914 and 1945, Europe experiences one of the most tragic episodes in its history.

Drawing up of about forty stratigraphically significant taxa results in a phytostratigraphy of the continental Neogene supporting correlations with surrounding areas. Meorover, palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic evolution of the studied areas are clarified while the phytostratigraphic framework evidences two major steps in the karst formation. Keywords: Belgium, Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse, Condroz, Cryptokarsts, Neogene, Phytostratigraphy, Palaeoenvironments, Palaeoclimates.
