Steve Bate I was going to write an article looking forward to Easter but then I heard the news of the atrocities that had just taken place in two mosques in New Zealand. Forty-nine people, loved by God, had been killed while attending their Friday Prayers in two mosques. Accounts have been emerging of communities coming together to share in mourning with their Muslim friends and neighbours. Vigils have been taking place around New Zealand. In one of these at a beach, flowers were laid on a heart of sand with the words “We stand with you” written with shells upon it. Meanwhile, here in the UK, I read of a man called Andrew Graystone, who stood outside a mosque in Manchester holding a sign that said “You are my friends. I will keep watch while you pray.” He offered a suggestion to other people via Twitter, saying “Can I suggest that Christians and others who are available gather outside their local mosque during Friday prayers today (about 12-1) to stand guard over our Muslim friends while they pray?” What a fantastic gesture of love and solidarity! We’re still in the season of Lent and we look forward to Easter. Reading our ‘Lent Pilgrim’ Church of England daily Lent reflections, I was drawn to one particular verse from the Bible passage known as The Sermon on the Mount. It’s a passage that can be found in Matthew’s Gospel where Jesus introduces some sayings called the Beatitudes (in other words the beautiful attitudes). Here’s the verse that struck me: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Who are the peacemakers? They’re people like you and me, people like Andrew Grayston, and people who follow their calling as Christians to bring something of heaven here and now on earth. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, puts it like this: “Christ calls us to be peacemakers who cross the borders and barriers that divide us – radical in our generosity and welcome. It’s a call to see others in their full humanity, to persist in seeking their good.” We’re in Lent - Easter’s coming soon, and on Easter Sunday Christians celebrate Jesus’ rising from the dead. God’s love is stronger than all evil – even death itself. For now, there are times when we mourn, we cry, we experience pain. But the bodily resurrection of Jesus points to God’s renewal of all things - God’s new creation - a time when God will wipe every tear from our eyes, a time when death will be no more, a time when mourning, crying and pain are no more. For now, each Christian is called to bring something of God’s new creation into their bit of the world around them, living out qualities of love, joy, peace and much more – being peacemakers. This Easter and beyond, may we be peacemakers, people who are radical in our generosity and welcome, people who see others in their full humanity, people who persist in seeking the good of others. The 1st Thursday of the month afternoon tea for over 60s was a great success and I am sure that it will grow very quickly when people taste Wendy’s cakes. Anyone who knows Wendy Forgham will know that her attention to detail is second to none and her cakes delicious and I know she has worked very hard to make the afternoon tea a success. I am looking forward to the next 2nd Wednesday in the month coffee morning which is open to all ages and it would be great to have some of the younger Mums/Dads coming along so we can be more intergenerational. Adult ballet has started on a Friday evening at 6-7pm which is aimed at a gentle pace to help with balance, control and good posture. It’s also good for socialising! We have the Music to Movement on Wednesday morning 10-11am for the more mature mover and for the more energetic, fit steps takes place on Wednesday evening 7-8pm run by Jacqui. East Herts Lottery www.easthertslottery.com We have now sold 42 tickets per week and have had 3 small wins to date. Potentially this can raise £1.092.00 over a one year projection so just imaging what can be done if we sold 100 tickets. I appreciate there are so many lotteries out there and the bigger lotteries get to advertise on television . We are not in that league yet, but who knows ?     HYDE HALL/GREAT HYDE HALL. The Story of a Manorial Home. The house has usually been called simply Hyde Hall. However, it is strictly speaking known as Great Hyde Hall, which of course differentiates it from the Royal Horticultural Society Garden at Hyde Hall, Chelmsford. BEGINNINGS. Being so far removed in time from the events concerned, much of the following section of this article is necessarily conjecture, but it is firmly based upon a logical extrapolation of facts. The siting of Hyde Hall is interesting. The implications and circumstantial evidence show that it may be the original site of the demesne of the first local Saxon Lord (there was no such thing as a Lord of the Manor at that time). Due to the heavy forestation of the local land, access was limited to the area around Sawbridgeworth. Rivers however, did provide a means of transport. The Saxons were quite late in arriving here, possibly not coming in numbers until after the year 500, having followed the River Stort valley. Indeed, the earliest local archaeologic Saxon finds are from the area of the river. It thus would make sense that the first Saxon Lord would site his house there. The very name ‘Sawbridgeworth’ (Saxbrixteworde in Domesday) also gives us a clue. One interpretation (there are others) of the name reads ‘Toll Bridge by the Manor’. This is taken from the following: Sax = Salt Salt was still used as a form of payment in late Roman/early Saxon times. Brixte = Bridge. Worde/Worthig = Fortified Manor. Another clue comes from Domesday which recorded a pre-existing watermill here for 1066.

C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself.

    Camp High Wych Even today, 75 years after the end of the Second World War, most locals will know that there once was an airfield in our part of East Hertfordshire. It was situated near Blounts Farm, Allens Green, Matham’s Wood and Trimms Green and was known as RAF Sawbridgeworth. See the above map. Mustangs, Spitfires and Lysanders flew from there. For those who want to know more I can recommend the excellent ‘Where the Lysanders were’ by Paul E. Doyle, published in 1995 and now out of print but available at local libraries, Sawbridgeworth Library amongst them. Second- hand copies are also available here and there. The cover of this book is reproduced above. From September 1946 until the summer of 1959 a community of homeless people was housed at the former airfield. It was known as ‘Camp High Wych’, the huts, the Drome or the Parsonage Estate. Hundreds of people lived there at some time or another. On 30 September nine families moved into the WAAF site of the former airfield, which was on the part of the airfield which fell within High Wych Parish. WAAF, by the way, stands for Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. The families gained entry by simply removing the Air Ministry padlocks. Of course, this did not remain secret. On 12 October 1946, the Herts and Essex Observer reported on it. The authorities also became aware. Over time more families arrived. The housing situation in 1945 and 1946 was indeed appalling, particularly for young couples who had married during or shortly after the war, with the husbands often having been away fighting in various foreign parts.

    High Wych History – 40 – Mathams wood Have any of you ever looked up High Wych on Wikipedia? If you have, then you will have read that “a moated site is all that remains of the medieval residence of Mathams”. Mathams Wood lies some 600 metres North East of Blounts Farm, Allens Green. William Page’s Victorian County History of Hertfordshire tells us that: “the manors of Shingle Hall alias Shingey and Mathams seem to have been originally two separate properties which became amalgamated in the hands of the Matham family, from whom the second manor took its name. They were evidently formed by subinfeudation (subletting) from the Mandeville manor, and were held of the honour of Mandeville”. The de Mandeville Dynasty was founded by Geoffrey, 1st Earl of Essex, a notorious cohort of William the Conqueror. William granted Geoffrey large estates, primarily in Essex, and Hertfordshire, but in other counties as well. Mathams Wood as shown on Google Earth Effigy of Geoffrey de Mandeville’s tomb at Temple Church, London John de Matham and subsequently Geoffrey de Matham are mentioned in the Assize Rolls of 1248 and 1249. The family then held the property well into the 17th c., when it was sold along with the Sayesbury and Pishiobury manors. On the the 1839 tithe map it is recorded as being owned by Rowland Alston (of Alston Oak!). By 1861 it was owned by John Prout a famous agriculturalist, entrepeneur and author, who was based at Blounts Farm. John Prout will be discussed in a later article. Those who know the area remember it for the wartime airfield there.

    USAAF AIRFIELDS Guide and Map Introduction During the Second World War, the East of England became home to hundreds of US airmen. They began arriving in 1942, with many existing RAF (Royal Air Force) airfields made available to the USAAF (United States Army Air Force). By 1943 there were over 100,000 US airmen based in Britain. The largest concentration was in the East of England, where most of the 8th Air Force and some of the 9th were located on near a hundred bases. The 8th Air Force was the largest air striking force ever committed to battle, with the first units arriving in May 1942. The 9th Air Force was re-formed in England in October 1943 - it was the operator of the most formidable troop-carrying force ever assembled. Their arrival had an immediate impact on the East Anglian scene. This was the 'friendly invasion' - a time of jitterbugging dances and big band sounds, while the British got their first taste of peanut butter, chewing gum and Coke. Famous US bandleader Glenn Miller was based in the Bedford area (Bedfordshire), along with his orchestra during the Second World War. Close associations with residents of the region produced long lasting friendships, sometimes even marriage. At The Eagle pub in Cambridge (Cambridgeshire), and The Swan Hotel at Lavenham (Suffolk), airmen left their signatures on the ceiling/walls. The aircraft of the USAAF were the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator - used by the Bombardment Groups (BG); and the P-51 Mustang, P-38 Lightning and P-47 Thunderbolt - used by the Fighter Groups (FG).

    THROUGH i ADVERSITY THE HISTORY OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE REGIMENT Kingsley M Oliver Western Desert 1941-42 ii Western Desert 1941-42 iii iv ABOUT THE AUTHOR ABOUT THE BOOK In the period between the first and second world wars the Royal Air Force - in common with many other air forces - believed that its real battles would be fought in the air and that there would be little danger of enemy attack on its airfields, installations and aircraft on the ground. In the unlikely event of such a threat developing, the Royal Air Force was confident that the British Army - with its much larger resources and its responsibility for the land battle - would always be able to come to the defence of vulnerable RAF stations. In 1940 and 1941, however, Britain’s enemies decided to change the rules of the game and their relentless attacks on airfields and aircraft on the ground rapidly eroded the effectiveness of the Royal Air Force in air combat to the extent that the loss of British air superiority in France, the Middle East and the Far East made the defeat of the British land and naval forces inevitable.
