Steve Bate I was going to write an article looking forward to Easter but then I heard the news of the atrocities that had just taken place in two mosques in New Zealand. Forty-nine people, loved by God, had been killed while attending their Friday Prayers in two mosques. Accounts have been emerging of communities coming together to share in mourning with their Muslim friends and neighbours. Vigils have been taking place around New Zealand. In one of these at a beach, flowers were laid on a heart of sand with the words “We stand with you” written with shells upon it. Meanwhile, here in the UK, I read of a man called Andrew Graystone, who stood outside a mosque in Manchester holding a sign that said “You are my friends. I will keep watch while you pray.” He offered a suggestion to other people via Twitter, saying “Can I suggest that Christians and others who are available gather outside their local mosque during Friday prayers today (about 12-1) to stand guard over our Muslim friends while they pray?” What a fantastic gesture of love and solidarity! We’re still in the season of Lent and we look forward to Easter. Reading our ‘Lent Pilgrim’ Church of England daily Lent reflections, I was drawn to one particular verse from the Bible passage known as The Sermon on the Mount. It’s a passage that can be found in Matthew’s Gospel where Jesus introduces some sayings called the Beatitudes (in other words the beautiful attitudes). Here’s the verse that struck me: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Who are the peacemakers? They’re people like you and me, people like Andrew Grayston, and people who follow their calling as Christians to bring something of heaven here and now on earth. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, puts it like this: “Christ calls us to be peacemakers who cross the borders and barriers that divide us – radical in our generosity and welcome. It’s a call to see others in their full humanity, to persist in seeking their good.” We’re in Lent - Easter’s coming soon, and on Easter Sunday Christians celebrate Jesus’ rising from the dead. God’s love is stronger than all evil – even death itself. For now, there are times when we mourn, we cry, we experience pain. But the bodily resurrection of Jesus points to God’s renewal of all things - God’s new creation - a time when God will wipe every tear from our eyes, a time when death will be no more, a time when mourning, crying and pain are no more. For now, each Christian is called to bring something of God’s new creation into their bit of the world around them, living out qualities of love, joy, peace and much more – being peacemakers. This Easter and beyond, may we be peacemakers, people who are radical in our generosity and welcome, people who see others in their full humanity, people who persist in seeking the good of others. 3 Village Hall News Jan Williamson The month of March has been very changeable just like the weather and we have been busy continuing to trial new ideas. The 1st Thursday of the month afternoon tea for over 60s was a great success and I am sure that it will grow very quickly when people taste Wendy’s cakes. Anyone who knows Wendy Forgham will know that her attention to detail is second to none and her cakes delicious and I know she has worked very hard to make the afternoon tea a success. I am looking forward to the next 2nd Wednesday in the month coffee morning which is open to all ages and it would be great to have some of the younger Mums/Dads coming along so we can be more intergenerational. Adult ballet has started on a Friday evening at 6-7pm which is aimed at a gentle pace to help with balance, control and good posture. It’s also good for socialising! We have the Music to Movement on Wednesday morning 10-11am for the more mature mover and for the more energetic, fit steps takes place on Wednesday evening 7-8pm run by Jacqui. East Herts Lottery www.easthertslottery.com We have now sold 42 tickets per week and have had 3 small wins to date. Potentially this can raise £1.092.00 over a one year projection so just imaging what can be done if we sold 100 tickets. I appreciate there are so many lotteries out there and the bigger lotteries get to advertise on television . We are not in that league yet, but who knows ? David is involved with the U3A History Group and offers the occasional talk. David has very kindly offered to do one of his PowerPoint talks at Little Hadham Village Hall on Tuesday 9th April doors opening at 7.30 for refreshments followed by the talk at 8 o’clock which will last for approximately one hour. London has an amazing wealth of Victorian Gothic Architecture and if this interests you please come and join us for a lovely spring evening talk. There is no charge for the evening but we would welcome donations which David has kindly offered to our Village Hall Refurbishment Project. With so much going on it has highlighted the problem that our very small committee is struggling to meet its demands so we are desperately looking for new and younger members of Little Hadham Community. If you think you have the right skills and experience of being part of a Management Committee we would love to hear from you. It is no good trying to refurbish a Village Hall if there is no one left to run it. The only requirements we need are enthusiasm and a passion for keeping your Village Assets going for future generations. To that end there is one more ask and that is we have set a date for our Village fete which we hope will merge with Hadfest. The date for this is Saturday September 14th and we are about to start recruiting support to help us organise and run this event. 7 I had just passed The Victoria Hotel and rounded a corner to see a superb barn owl upon the estate wall. Nowhere to stop and park so I carried on, managing to turn around and head back. By now, numerous cars and a bus had gone by so I was really surprised to see the owl still present. I stopped and managed a few photos in excellent light before he flew off and roosted in a tree. 8 News from the Gardens of Easton Lodge Preservation Trust
We are now fully recovered from our record snowdrop Open Days – over 2,800 adults and children loved our snowdrops and kept us on our feet all day, so we are starting the season proper, in April, with over 1000 more visitors than last year! And we are on track to have the Italian garden lily pond back to its best in time for April visitors – with the lilies divided and ready to multiply! In April we are once again hosting the Helen Rollason fundraiser Rural Rambles on 13 April. Our Open Day is on 28 April, where children from St Mary’s Primary School, Great Dunmow will be exhibiting their project work on the Gardens’ history and singing for us. The gate will open at 11.30. For further details, see our website: www.eastonlodge.co.uk We are working hard to finish our winter jobs and to prep for the Spring – further plantings and sowing of seeds, particularly in the walled kitchen garden, which we hope will be every bit as productive this year as last year! 10 Little Hadham Afternoon Teas What a brilliant start to our over 60s Afternoon Teas in the Village Hall. Despite being an incredibly wet and windy Thursday afternoon, a lovely bunch of ladies and gents turned out to enjoy a selection of mini sandwiches, homemade cakes, scones and cream, and copious pots of tea. A little bit of Nat King Cole, a dash of Parisian Swing, and the chink of tea spoons on china accompanied the chit chat and five o’clock came around far too soon. I know I had a great afternoon and I hope to see friends old and new, neighbours, relatives and carers at our next Tea on 4th April from 3.00 till 5.00 pm. 13 The Hundred Parishes www.hundredparishes.org.uk The Hundred Parishes area includes many airfields and former airfields. Most were constructed in a remarkably short period by the United States Army Air Force when the USA became involved in World War II, while others date back to World War I and the very early days of aviation. Duxford was built towards the end of WWI, many of its buildings constructed by German prisoners of war. It played a significant role in both World Wars. It is now the location of Imperial War Museum Duxford, a fascinating site that includes many buildings from both World Wars and a huge collection of military and civilian aircraft and other wartime exhibits. RAF Sawbridgeworth (actually in High Wych parish) also originated in WWI and was then used in WWII. Andrews Field was the first US air base in Europe, constructed in 1942/43 using rubble from the London Blitz. This airfield, partly in Stebbing and partly in Great Saling, is well used today by small private aircraft and has a tea room open to the public. Other airfields were built in WWII at Castle Camps, Hadstock (known as RAF Little Walden), Hunsdon, Little Easton (also known as RAF Great Dunmow), Matching (mainly in White Roding parish), Nuthampstead, Radwinter (known as RAF Great Sampford although only partially in that parish) and Stansted. The runways, along with various buildings and more recent memorials survive at most of these airfields, whilst the sites have been developed for a variety of uses. RAF Debden, constructed in 1937 and mainly in Wimbish parish, is now the site of Carver Barracks. Wethersfield airfield (mainly in Finchingfield parish) was built by the Americans and today is still used bythe Ministry of Defence. 14 William Walker Ellcock carpenter, undertaker, photographer and picture frame maker of Ash Cottage, Little Hadham was well known for his local postcards. A forebear of our February speaker Felicity Brimblecombe, he came from a line of carpenters and undertakers in the village. Her 4x great grandfather was baptised Daniel Allcock in Suffolk, became butler to the Segar Parry family of Little Hadham Place, and now named Ellcock, married Sarah Simpson at St Cecilia’s in 1798. The couple served the Parrys faithfully for some 50 years, and were remembered in the family wills. A rare portrait of Daniel took pride of place in her talk. His son John became a wheelwright whilst another son Daniel, became a carpenter and undertaker at The Ash. The many family records, including early funeral books, show details of local residents over many years, whilst tithe records show Daniel leased fields, and property, including a workshop and garden at The Ash. He also owned property at Ford, where his brother John owned the Nags Head in the 1840s. Daniel married Narrah Cane of Crishall in 1826 and their carpenter son, another Daniel, joined the family business later, marrying Elizabeth Merchant of Braughing, on Christmas day 1856, their son, William W. was born in Little Hadham in 1864. By 1881 William W. had joined his father and his interest in photography meant that by 1901 picture framing and postcards had been added to the business at Ash. His father died in 1898, whilst his mother continued in their grocery shop. Surviving postcards provide an excellent record of the area at that time. They feature prominently in booklets on Little Hadham by Stephen Ruff and Fred Harris and a selection featuring local scenes were on display at the meeting. The Little Hadham Parish Plan Group are thanked for arranging and contributing to this well researched and detailed presentation, which was much appreciated by the audience.

Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire needs more Trustees, and this passion, coupled with common sense, is what links everyone who works to achieve the remarkable successes of this local charity. Our professional approach enables us to respond to referrals from many other agencies in the local community including health care, education, local authority, and to requests from parents. The range of issues includes: - An isolated single parent with two young children, fleeing domestic abuse- A family with five children, mother unable to leave the house due to anxiety and panic attacks - A child with Autistic Spectrum Condition, mum feeling very isolated and judged unable to leave the house Our statistics show that the weekly support from our well-trained Volunteers helps restore confidence and control, leading to improved health and family relationships. As an early intervention service, we help families ‘get back on track’, thus often preventing or reducing the need for statutory services or for a child to go into care. We estimate it costs £1500 a year to provide a Volunteer, whereas it costs around £3,000 a week, or £156,000 year, to fund a child in residential care. Good governance is key to providing this essential service and we provide a comprehensive induction programme for new trustees. We particularly need people with Finance, IT, HR, Social Media and Fundraising expertise; however, whatever your background, if you are keen to help us continue to make a real difference to the lives of local families, we would love to hear from you. 16 Simon’s Marathon xx 8 years of applying I have finally secured a ballot place in the London Marathon and will be running the race on Sunday 28th April 2019... Up until now I have simply been an occasional barefoot runner, frequent beer drinker and full time father and husband. I am also a fixer of computery stuff all over Europe for an American finance company. Once every year, for the last 8 years I have waited hopefully by the letterbox during the first week of October, wishing for ‘the Letter’ to drop. And this year it finally did!! Running in the London Marathon has been something on my ‘to do’ list for a very long time. And after watching Sarah, my wife, run it in 2017 I felt even more inspired. And so now my journey begins. Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire (HSRSC) are a charity close to my heart. 19 Down at the doctor’s Dr Paul Haimes Just think of me as you read this; soaking up the sun (or getting soaked) in New Zealand; land of rugby, sheep and Cloudy Bay Sauvignon! I will be back on UK shores, post Brexit, on Star Wars day (may the Fourth) and in my absence, Dr Sharif will be doing 2 extra days, Dr Oates will be at Hunsdon Village Hall on Friday mornings (she has her own keys now!) and Dr Jennings will be covering St Elizabeths. The NHS is imposing changes to the GP contract from April 1st which will see us having to jump through more hoops and meet new targets. Hopefully, by the time I return things will be up and running but in the past the re-adjustments have taken until June/July to be fully implemented. There should be no significant effect on patient care, booking appointments, ordering repeat prescriptions etc but I will keep you informed of any major issues as we go along. Due to all the local building we will almost invariably need to look at our practice area/borders, in line with NHS England guidelines. This means that if you move, for example, to certain areas of Bishop’s Stortford, you may not be able to stay registered at Much Hadham Health Centre. More of this later in the year. Finally, if you are aged between 40 and 74 without a recognised long term medical condition, don’t forget that you’re entitled to a free NHS health check with one of our nurses; just ask reception.
Easter Easter is the most holy time in all the Christian churches as it fulfils God’s promise of resurrection, when Jesus Christ died on the Cross and was risen from the dead. Can you find time in today’s rush and noise to come and join in with one of our services, or just sit quietly in St. Cecilia’s for a while to think, meditate or pray.

20 Rural Ramblings Cherry Mardell Spring has sprung... leastways the wild birds of SG11 certainly think so. I’ve never seen so much courtship so early before. Old nests are being given the once-over and their ownership is the number one priority for our feathered friends.v Considering we are so close to the main road, I am constantly amazed at the large numbers, and varied species, of birds on our feeders. We were getting through such large amounts of food that I felt I had to put a brake on things – there’s only so much bird seed that can be smuggled through as part of the weekly food shop! So we bought a different feeder, one which we hoped the rooks could not attack, swing from, or scatter the good seed on the land! And it has worked! Now only our smaller birds can get into the feeder, and what they drop – and there’s plenty - stays on the small base and doesn’t fall to the ground. Round one to us! Meanwhile our remaining three chickens continue to stand beneath the feeder in the vain hope some seed might fall. They give us the occasional egg – just enough reward to keep them, despite their personal sell-by dates being long gone! I’m disappointed in our alpacas... now our ‘boys’ can no longer procreate and our girls are getting a bit long in the tooth ( literally as well as factually) there’s no chance of small fry alpacas making an appearance as spring rolls into summer. I have joined an alpaca group on Facebook and am ashamed to see how many members claim their animals are loving creatures, unlike mine who would happily kick me if I got between them and their feed bucket! We do have one new member of our gang – she is a very old, very small and very ginger cat. With only four teeth left it requires me to mash up all her food so she can suck, rather than chew it up! Nino is basically a barn cat but has learnt to creep in and find the radiator in our sitting room. There she stays until bedtime when I carry her out, complete with (mushed-up) supper, and deposit her back onto her comfy bed. Yes, I’m a sucker for animals ...but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

You can report dumped rubbish to us to investigate, remove and prosecute with evidence. Fly tipping on other land We can only remove dumped rubbish on verges, pavements next to roads and on council-owned land. Details on who to contact for other types of fly tipping can be found below: Roads - if a fly tip is blocking part or all of the road, please report it to Hertfordshire County Council using their online Highway Fault Reporting Form or by calling 0300 1234 047. Rivers, streams or canals - if the rubbish is in or by rivers, streams or canals, or on their paths or banks, please contact the Environment Agency on 0800 807 060 Private Land - please contact the landowner. We will investigate fly tipping on private land if there is evidence. Preventing fly tipping Everyone has a legal ‘duty of care’ to ensure your household or business waste is disposed of correctly. You can be prosecuted even if your waste is fly tipped by someone else on your behalf. If it’s YOUR waste, it’s YOUR responsibility. Always use a registered waste carrier to collect your rubbish. Follow the S.C.R.A.P code. Let’s S.C.R.A.P fly tipping Suspect all waste carriers. Don’t let them take your rubbish until they provide proof of registration. Note their vehicle’s registration plate. Check that a waste carrier is registered with the Environment Agency. Refuse any unexpected offers to have your rubbish taken away. Ask how your rubbish will be disposed of - seek evidence of this. Paperwork must be obtained: a proper invoice, waste transfer note or receipt, including a description of the waste being removed and the waste carrier’s contact details. We also offer a Bulky Rubbish Collection service. Report Fly tipping You can report fly tipping using the Flytipping Form. In your report please include as many details as possible, including: • location and type of rubbish that has been dumped • details of vehicle that dumped the rubbish (if possible) • description of the people involved (if possible) Please do not touch the fly tip or remove any items from the waste. If you witness fly tipping actually taking place call the Police on 999. Village Hall. Since then much research has been carried out to make this a reality.
The major requirements are of course the equipment to actually Little Hadham Film Club project films and the licence under which a film may be shown. Est. 2019 Equipment has been generously loaned to us, for the time being, and trials have been conducted to ensure that the hall is suitable. Obtaining a suitable licence has proved to be more complicated than at first supposed. The best deal found is an annual licence renewed in May of each year. The films must be shown under the licence terms agreed with the major film studios. This involves forming a Private Members Club and viewing will only be available within the Village Hall premises. Also, no public advertising is allowed, therefore the audience are required to be fully paid up members of the Film Club and will receive information of forthcoming films and dates of viewing by email. The Membership fee will be set at the modest sum of £15 per annum, to be paid at the beginning of the licence year. Members may occasionally bring guests, who will be charged £3 per showing, on arrival at the Box Office. It is our intention to show up to ten films per year, covering a variety of themes, such as past favourites, recent releases, drama, musicals, historical drama and comedy. Screenings will be scheduled for evenings at the weekend and on some weekday afternoons. It is hoped that the programme will begin in May. In addition to easy parking, comfortable surroundings will be provided, with informal seating around tables. A cash bar will be available; serving refreshments including tea, coffee and soft drinks as well as wine and beer. Poppy Appeal News 2019 Folks, I know it’s a long way off but I thought I’d get a bit of a head start on this year’s Poppy Appeal news. Firstly may I, on everyone’s behalf, send huge thanks to Frank Green (retiring Village Poppy Appeal Organiser) who has given many years of unstinting dedication to this position. Thank You Frank for all your hard work and for giving me the opportunity to take up the reins, I do hope I can follow in your footsteps and do an equally excellent job! I’m really proud to take up the mantle of Village Poppy Appeal Organiser. As a village we do give very generously in fact usually we manage at least £1,000 in total every year! We have ten or so dedicated collectors (we can do with more [email protected]) and we cover most parts of the Parish at collection time in November. Our school, pub & business premises also do their bit by accommodating collection boxes.
