    CAPTURING KINSHIP: VISUALIZING THE HISTORY OF CHINESE ADOPTION IN CANADA by Emilie J. Lanthier A thesis submitted to the Department of History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (April 2021) Copyright ©Emilie J. Lanthier, 2021 Abstract The Chinese government enacted the one-child policy during the late 1970s and early 1980s to curb the growth of the country’s swelling population. This extreme form of family planning marked the beginning of a radical social experiment that profoundly affected Canada’s social and familial landscape. In the forty years since China instituted its one-child policy, Western media remains obsessed with narratives about saving girls from China’s draconian state policies. As such, my MA research asks what claims images of needy children have made on Canadian audiences, and to what degree their meanings and interpretations were contoured by broader processes and ideologies. Special attention is paid to how the presence and visibility of the female Chinese adoptee have altered notions of Chinese Canadian identity, international humanitarianism, and interracial kinship, through a visual discursive analysis of the images that have saturated our national retina and animated the practice of Chinese adoption in Canada. I will demonstrate how visual mediums are historically rooted communication structures that act as alternative sites of ideological production and exchange, whereby constructions of needy children are transformed through a complex matrix of image-making and image-consuming practices. In this way, the visual representation of the Chinese adoptee becomes an opening through which to investigate both the historical record of intercountry adoption in Canada and the timeless power of symbolic children.

While last year, we faced the sad task of recognizing the lives and careers of two Oincomparable photographers, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, this year our attention turns to two writers — The New York Times’ Anthony Shadid and Marie Colvin of The Sunday Times of London. While our focus then was on the horrors of Gadhafi’s Libya, it is now the Syria of Bashar al- Assad. All four of these giants of our profession gave their lives in the service of an ideal and a mission that we consider so vital to our way of life — a full, complete and objective understanding of a world that is so all too often contemptuous or ignorant of these values. Theirs are the same talents and accomplishments to which we pay tribute in each of our awards tonight — and that the Overseas Press Club represents every day throughout the year. For our mission, like theirs, does not stop as we file from this room. The OPC has moved resolutely into the digital age but our winners and their skills remain grounded in the most fundamental tenets expressed through words and pictures — unwavering objectivity, unceasing curiosity, vivid story- telling, thought-provoking commentary.

    The European Union: Current Challenges and Future Prospects Updated February 27, 2017 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R44249 The European Union: Current Challenges and Future Prospects Summary The European Union (EU) is a unique partnership in which member states have pooled sovereignty in certain policy areas and harmonized laws on a wide range of economic and political issues. The EU is the latest stage in a process of European integration begun after World War II, initially by six Western European countries, to promote peace, security, and economic development. The EU currently consists of 28 member states, including the formerly communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe. EU members share a customs union; a single market in which goods, services, people, and capital move freely (known as the “four freedoms”); a common trade policy; a common agricultural policy; and a common currency (the euro), which is used by 19 member states (collectively referred to as the “eurozone”). Twenty-two EU members participate in the Schengen area of free movement, in which individuals may travel without passport checks. In addition, the EU has taken steps to develop common foreign and security policies, has sought to build common internal security measures, and remains committed to enlargement, especially to the countries of the Western Balkans. The EU is largely viewed as a cornerstone of European stability and prosperity. Currently, however, the EU faces a range of political and economic pressures, including slow growth and persistently high unemployment in many EU countries, as well as the rise of populist political parties, at least some of which harbor anti-EU or “euroskeptic” sentiments.

    OWENS, WENDY M., Ph.D., MAY 2018 ENGLISH IDENTITY AND THE IN-BETWEEN SPACE IN TRANSRACIAL ADOPTEE LITERATURE: MAKING SPACE FOR THE MISSING VOICE (307 PP.) Dissertation Advisor: Babacar M’Baye Within the past few years, adoptees have been challenging the positive adoption narratives about them by implementing corrective action movements through various scholarly, literary, and rhetorical media in order to claim their voices and agency. Exploring such movements, this dissertation focuses on several significant books about transnational adoption. These works are: Perpetual Child: Dismantling the Stereotype; Outsiders Within: Writing on Transracial Adoption; Flip the Script: Adult Adoptee Anthology; Lucky Girl: A Memoir; Ghost of Sangju: A Memoir of Reconciliation; and Fugitive Visions: An Adoptee’s Return to Korea. The narratives individually and collectively offer alternative voices in the exploration of identities across borders, cultures, and boundaries in ways that intersect with immigration and ethnic literature. Each book strengthens the intersectionality conversation of transnational adoptees and the importance of understanding their in-between identities as unique. Moreover, each narrative reflects the transnational adoptees’ temporary umbrella of white privilege and their 1.5 generation immigration status that set them apart from same-race and transracial domestically- adopted persons as well as their first-generation cohort and second-generation same-aged peers. Focusing on these dynamics, this dissertation attempts to privilege transnational adoptee books and scholarship that work to shift the conversations about orphan/adoptees to those created by adoptees. It aims to make a space for their missing voices.
