Free School Meals The impact of the coronavirus pandemic is not limited to health. We are aware that for many families, the last few months have been incredibly challenging, and many people have been struggling to continue working while so much of the economy has been locked down. Even as we move out of the most severe phase of lockdown, there are many businesses that are forecasting long-term damage and job losses, and our community will feel the impact of that as much as anywhere else. The place of our schools at the centre of our community has been reinforced during this period, and we hope that we can do our bit to help. One way that families can get support when it is most needed is through the school meals system. At the moment, children who are eligible to receive free school meals are receiving vouchers which can be redeemed at supermarkets. It is the Local Authority who manages the system for claiming free school meals, and then informs the schools. However, it is not complicated and is usually a fairly quick process. Once they confirm that an application is authorized, they contact our schools and we put the system in place. The whole system is completely confidential. We want to make sure as many eligible pupils as possible are claiming their free school meals, and the Local Authority try to make it as easy as possible for parents and schools. use the Department for Education's free school meals eligibility checking system. Parents only need to provide their National Insurance Number or National Asylum Support Service Reference Number, surname and date of birth. You can Register online. Free school meals are available to pupils in receipt of, or whose parents are in receipt of, one or more of the qualifying benefits:  Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earning from up to three of your most recent assessment periods)  Income Support  Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)  Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)  Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999  The guarantee element of Pension Credit  Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual gross income of no more than £16,190  Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for the four weeks after the person stops qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

In addition, there is a temporary Coronavirus extension of free school meals eligibility for children of groups who have no recourse to public funds. Families in these groups cannot apply online and should telephone 0300 500 8080 to apply. We also recognise that there are some families who are suffering particular hardship at the moment, and we continue to work with Hope to provide additional food deliveries where necessary. Please feel free to contact us in confidence if you feel that this would be helpful at the moment. We will continue this urgent provision until it is no longer needed, and are hugely grateful to Hope for the fantastic work they do. During the next few weeks, we will be announcing a fundraiser that we will be taking part to continue and extend this support.

Paul Heery Chief Executive Officer Alderman White School’s adult language classes go 'live online' After weeks of not being able to continue classes in a range of languages, many of our adult learners are now benefiting from new live on-line courses. Classes are already running in a number if languages including French, Spanish and Russian with plans for Italian and A-Level Arabic to start soon. Heather Shaw and I have received so many positive comments about the new on-line classes which have enabled our wider community of learners to continue their studies while retaining the social interaction which is an important part of our provision.

Anyone interested in joining an on-line course should contact us on: [email protected] Mr K Stephan
