The Grade A Advantage

Liavita’s Glucomannan Powder (EFSA Grade A) (Amorphophallus ) has one of the highest molecular weight (up to 2x106 Daltons) in the natural world. Glucomannan is derived from a specific species of Amorphophallus Konjac tubers that grows only in high altitude mountainous regions of Asia. Glucomannan has very a unique nutritional profile and functional properties for food. Our Glucomannan was approved by EU-EFSA for both a weight loss reduction claim and a cholesterol reduction claim. We have the only EFSA approved natural weight loss ingredient.

Grade A is highly purified and fully water soluble powder that forms a thermally stable gel at low concentration levels when dissolved in water. Our proprietary manufacturing process achieves the highest purification of the raw material resulting in a fiber that sustains its physical properties, such as viscosity, for extended periods of time. Other Glucomannans break down quickly in the GI tract and lose their viscosity due to traces of hydrolytic enzymes present that break down the fiber. The main characteristic property of our material is it’s strong and elastic gel or soluble fiber mass and the appealing smooth texture in solution.

Presently, several grades are commercially available including specific grades for dietary supplements, baking, dairy and a delayed hydration fiber for beverage use. Grade A does not have a taste sensory impact. Glucomannan can retain up to 200 times its mass in water and remain a hydrated fiber mass until it passes smoothly through the bowels. Glucomannan can also be used as a moisture-preserving ingredient in food products and other food applications where moisture levels are desirable for good quality of finished goods. Glucomannan is a non-ionic fiber and pH stable from 2.5 to 13. Due to its thermal stable gels, the water is retained even after heating. Glucomannan gel formation is activated faster as temperature increases. Depending on the formulation requirements this is another unique characteristic of our Grade A material. This improves product yields and extends the freshness of food products. The firm gel can also act as a binder, thus its use can result in reduction of additives commonly employed with other gums.

The thermally stable gel also allows for fat substitution resulting in lower calorie products while the moisture retentiveness, cohesiveness and spring action of the gel improve food texture and mouth-feel. In terms of food functionality, it has been used as a binder, fat

replacer, moisture stabilizer, texturizer, emulsion stabilizer and even can prevent color leaching in layered food products. Other specific applications are available upon request.

Grade A has been extensively evaluated clinically (more than 23 published university studies in diverse populations) in four health categories: satiety and weight control, cholesterol reduction, glucose balance and prebiotic effects. The clinical studies are publically available for review. The key consideration to such health benefits is the dosing. In the case of Grade A, this is low at 3g/day; this coincides with the daily-recommended dose. Other fibers too have similar health claims, however at much higher dosing.

The regulatory profile for Grade A is very favorable and its use is worldwide for weight loss applications, cholesterol reduction dietary supplements and food enhancements.

Chemical and Physical Characteristics

The primary component in Glucomannan Powder (EFSA Grade A) from Amorphophallus Konjac species is konjac glucomannan (KGM), a high molecular . The structure of KGM as residues of and glucose, linked together by β-1,4 with a molar ratio of 1.6:1.0. It is a slightly branched polysaccharide having a molecular weight of 200,000 to 2,000,000 Daltons (actual molecular weight of KGM depends on the konjac variety.

Glucomannan Powder (EFSA Grade A) is white in color, soluble in water and virtually insoluble in alcohol.

Raw Materials and Processing Aids

Glucomannan Powder (EFSA Grade A) is produced through a multi-step alcohol extraction process. All raw materials and processing aids are food-grade quality and are safe and suitable for use in the manufacture of food ingredients consistent with appropriate U.S. federal regulations, or have previously been determined to be GRAS.

Process Controls

Glucomannan Powder (EFSA Grade A) ingredient is manufactured consistent with the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP). Throughout the production process, all culture media and fermentation broth are tested for sterility prior to use.
