MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS in the CHURCH & CHURCHYARD of ST MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS, FLORDON, NORFOLK (as recorded in 1980, updated 2009) INTRODUCTION The inscriptions on monuments in Flordon Church and churchyard were recorded in 1980 by Mrs M Ryan & Mrs S Gilbert of Tasburgh W.I. assisted by Mrs P Boatwright of Shefford W.I., Bedfordshire. They appear to have used a map drawn by ‘D.G.R.’, Churchwarden of Flordon at that time, a copy of which was framed and hung in the vestry. We must be ever grateful to this valiant team, for some of the inscriptions have become illegible in the intervening 30 years – indeed some of the memorials no longer exist. We must also be grateful to Paul Cattermole and a team of pupils from Norwich School (members of the 6b Local History Group of King Edward VI School, Norwich, to be precise) who put together a booklet about the church and churchyard in 1992, including sketches by Oliver Hemming. His sketch of Will Dade’s grave is included here, but the detail has been lost to the weather in the past 18 years. Unfortunately, the sandstone graves are flaking and the limestone graves are being eaten away by acid rain…. This survey retains the wording recorded in 1980, with the addition of monuments added since that time. The 1980 map has been annotated and updated to help in finding the location of specific monuments. The up-date was done in June 2009 by Jill & David Wright of the Mulbarton Heritage Group assisted by Edmund Perry, Transcript Officer and Trustee of the Norfolk Family History Society. Mr Perry also helped by supplying a transcript of the burial register for 1813-2001. And our thanks to the present members of Flordon Church for their help and encouragement. MAP AND ORDER OF MIs The 1980s map and the graveyard survey seem to have been drawn up independently. The original survey divided the churchyard into 3 areas: A – west of the gravel paths to the church porch B – the area N of the church and E of the path, with newer graves C – the area S of the church and E of the path, with some of the oldest graves. Each MI was given a unique number beginning A, B or C, but running consecutively from the first MI, A1 (in the far SW corner of the churchyard) to the last MI, C127 (by the SE corner of the church). The numbers were given roughly along rows though these are not always obvious on the map! Consequently, graves added since 1980 have had to be fitted in with subsidiary letters linked to the number of the nearest pre-1980 grave (e.g. A010a and A010b). The newest graves in Area B have been added at the end (B128 – B140). Numbers and names are marked on the accompanying map. Fortunately the churchyard is compact enough for visitors to be able to find a particular monument with the help of the map and the charts listing each MI by location or by name in alphabetical order. We hope so!
