It is in one sense the arriving guest, anxious to exert whatever attractions it may possess on its potential host — the particular public to which it has chosen to appeal. But at the same time it sets out to become a host itself, offering its hospitality to writers and their ideas, and ready to welcome to the salon of its pages the most brilliant and the most erudite of guests. During the past months we have spent much time and energy pressing the claims of Canadian Literature as a potential guest of the literary pub- lic of our country. We have pointed out that it will be the first review devoted only to the study of Canadian writers and writing. It will — we have added — throw a concentrated light on a field that has never been illuminated systematically by any previous periodical; and we have em- phasized the kind of services it will provide for writers, scholars, librarians and — by no means least — the curious reader. By the very fact of appearing, a magazine renders obsolete such pro- phecies and projections. It exists, and must become its own justification. But its very existence may have been rendered possible only by the faith of people and institutions who have been willing to become — in one way or another — its hosts. -

ESSENTIALS Montreal Essentials Origin of the Name: It’s generally accepted that Montreal got its name from the mountain at its centre. The theory is that French explorer Jacques Cartier applied the name “Mont Royal” to the modest peak he ascended when he visited the area in 1535. While the French settle - ment that was established a century later was initially called Ville Marie (in honour of the Virgin Mary), by the 1700s the name “Montreal” (a contraction of Mont Royal) was commonly used. Coat of Arms: Adopted in 1833 and modified in 1938. Emblazoned on a silver field is a heraldic cross meant to reflect Christian motives and principles. On the coat of arms are also four emblems: The fleur-de-lis of the Royal House of Bourbon representing the French settlers, the Lancastrian rose for the English component of the city’s population, the thistle represents those of Scottish descent; and the Irish shamrock rep - resents early Irish settlers. Montreal’s Motto: Concordia Salus (Salvation through harmony). 17 ESSENTIALS Official Flag: First displayed in May 1939. The flag is emblazoned with holiday known as St. Jean-Baptiste Day (feast day of St. John the the same heraldic symbols as those of the coat of arms. Baptist). WAIN MAN, ELLIOTT GOSE, ROBERT HARLOW, JOAN LOWNDES, PETER STEVENS A QUARTERLY OF CRITICISM AND R€VI€W CANADIAN BIOGRAPHY WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE that the British Columbia Medal for Popular Biography, which is administered by Canadian Literature, has been awarded to Phyllis Grosskurth for her John Addington Symonds: A Biography, which the judges unanimously regarded as by far the best biography published in 1964 by a Canadian writer. Mrs. Grosskurth's book is a lucid and penetrating study of her subject. She considers carefully and delicately the ten- sions that afflicted Symonds as an upper-middle-class Victorian who spent half his life resisting and the other half guiltily accepting his homosexual inclinations; she suggests with appropriate obliqueness the reasons for the great gap between Symonds' evident promise as a writer and his actual literary achievement; above all, the architecture of her book is beautifully balanced, and the writing admir- ably sensitive and clear. John Addington Symonds, published in Canada by Longmans, stands so far above any other biographical work published by a Canadian during 1964 that there was no moment of doubt that it deserved the award. This is the first time in many years that the U.B.C. Medal for Popular Biog- raphy has been awarded for a work on a non-Canadian subject. -

Cadets, Curfews, and Compulsory Schooling: Mobilizing Anglophone Children in WW II Montreal TAMARA MYERS MARY ANNE POUTANEN* The early 1940s constituted an important moment for youth in Quebec as social pol- icy brought childhood and adolescence into sharper focus and the regulation of young people’s behaviour expanded in the name of the wartime emergency. Mea- sures for the mobilization and discipline of children were fuelled by images of absent fathers, working mothers, and latch-key children, combined with the dramat- ically rising juvenile delinquency rate. Legislation mandating compulsory schooling and a curfew for juveniles permitted the state and its agencies to train and constrain children and youth at a moment when parental guidance and surveillance were ostensibly at their lowest point. Protestant schools directed coercive strategies and protective measures at school-age children in an exaggerated effort to create good children and patriotic citizens. Le début des années 1940 a été un moment charnière de la jeunesse du Québec, car la politique sociale fit alors une plus grande place à l’enfance et à l’adolescence et la réglementation du comportement juvénile fut élargie au nom de l’urgence de guerre. Les mesures visant à mobiliser et à discipliner les enfants s’alimentaient aux images de pères absents, de mères ouvrières et d’enfants à la clé combinées à une hausse spectaculaire du taux de délinquance juvénile. Les lois décrétant la fréquen- tation scolaire obligatoire et un couvre-feu pour les enfants permirent à l’État et à ses organisme de former les enfants et les jeunes et de les assujettir à sa volonté à un moment où l’encadrement et la surveillance des parents atteignirent ostensible- ment un creux. -

How have people engaged with Canadian nature, and what do these engagements reveal about the nature of Canada (and Canadians)? We are not the first to explore these questions. Generations of scholars, creative writers, cultural commentators, and others have pondered them, but most took the idea of nature for granted. Rather than limiting and fixing its meaning, in the way that nineteenth-century naturalists pinned butterflies to cardboard in their efforts to put life in order, they lived and worked with a degree of imprecision. Forsaking rigid definition in favour of the Humpty Dumpty–like assumption that “when I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean,” they bolstered the common claim that nature is “perhaps the most complex word in the language.” Nature is many things. -

ABSTRACT This thesis explores the inteiiectuai bistory of Marstaall McLuhan by examining the concepts of modemism and the ûivium that ifluenced him while he was enrolled at Cambridge University during the 1930s and eady 1940s. Not only did such concepts have a lasting impact upm McLuhan, becoming recurring themes-albeit often implicitly rather than explicitly-in his future work, but they are ultimately at the rwt of his approach to the dynamics of the media landscape.
