April 2, 2012 Honourable Michael Chan Minister of Tourism, Culture & Sport 900 Bay Street, 9th Floor, Hearst Block Toronto, ON M7A 2E1 via email: [email protected] Dear Minister Chan: As President of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, I am writing on behalf of our 37 member communities to express our extreme frustration regarding the announcement in Budget 2012 of the closure of the Kenora, Rainy River and Fort Frances Travel Centres. While we understand and support the need for deficit reduction, we question the rationale for closing every gateway centre in the western area of Northwestern Ontario. This decision will leave a busy tourist area completely void of the visitor information centres that are vital to providing visitors with the information they need to extend their stay and increase their spending – both of which are essential principles outlined within the Discovering Ontario report. It is interesting to note that the Fort Frances border crossing recorded a 10.8% increase in people crossing into Ontario this February. This decision comes on the heels of an earlier decision to reduce the funding to Municipally operated tourist information centres across the North. That resulted in fewer centres being available to assist the travelling public in learning what to see and where to go as they travel through this vast and magnificent land. 2 We encourage the Minister to delay the closure of the Fort Frances Visitor Centre until the requested meeting has been held between yourself, Mr. Ronald Holgerson of OTMPC, and the sub regional board members of Northern Ontario RTO 13 and Sunset Country and the North of Superior Travel Association. -

The editor decided if it ran the way it was taken, it would “look wrong”, so the production department reversed the picture, making the lettering readable. -

Ontario Golf Awareness Day
Ontario Golf Awareness Day Photo credits: Denis Drever Ontario Golf Awareness Day April 20th, 2011 The Ontario Allied Golf Association (OAGA) kicked off the golf season with a visit to Queen’s Park on April 20th. This was OAGA’s first-ever full lobby day at Queen’s Park, so the visit was designed to give Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) and their staff a proper introduction to the golf Industry in Ontario. The day emphasized the size and scope of golf in Ontario- it’s the most popular sport, contributing about 1% of the province’s GDP – and also underlined the responsible role that golf plays in protecting Ontario’s environment and working to make Ontario a better place. The day featured a breakfast roundtable on small business issues, a press conference in the Queen’s Park media studio, a legislative reception, and 30 meetings throughout the day. The Issue Ontario golf industry representatives went to Toronto to meet with Ministers and MPPs concerning the size and scope of the golf industry in Ontario, particularly in regards to the provincial economy. Through the individual contribution of many small businesses, the sport is responsible for more than $4.3 billion of Ontario’s GDP. Golf creates $11.5 billion in direct, indirect, and induced spending in the province and the industry is responsible for over 123,000 jobs and $1.2 billion in taxes paid to all levels of government. It is important that government decision makers be made aware of the fact that Ontario’s golf courses are leaders in environmentally sustainable golf course operations, and are constantly researching technologies and methods to reduce their environmental impact, having spent more than $1.2 million in recent years to research more environmentally sustainable practices. -

The tag line says it all, honouring commitment, leadership, champions, initiatives, ambassadors and stewards of heritage preservation and conservation. On Thursday November 21st , at The Mississauga Grand Banquet and Convention Centre, Heritage Mississauga will celebrate and honour heritage heroes in our midst. We need your help to find these extraordinary citizens in our community. Who do you know who deserves recognition, who has given of their time and talents to support our community, the unsung heroes who quietly go about their lives not seeking recognition but are always supportive and ready to lend a hand. Nominations will be received in 8 categories: Heritage Business Leader Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Community Heritage Award, Heritage Champion Award, Heritage Youth Award, Mississaugas of the New Credit Cultural and Heritage Award, Modern Heritage Award and Natural Heritage Award. The nomination process is easy. A form is available on our website www.heritagemississauga.com to download, or printed for pickup at our office. Criteria and guidelines are included in the package.
