Given the quality of his work and his reputation for high standards, the expectations for a show revolving around Michael Jackson will always be exceedingly high. Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE, produced in conjunction with Jackson’s estate, aspires to meet the level of perfection the star would demand. The show, which combines Jackson’s music with Cirque’s distinctive acrobatic feats, is at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas in a space that was formerly occupied by a production of The Lion King; it was completely renovated specifically for MJ ONE. CDS anchored a team that included Auerbach Pollock Friedlander, Moser Architecture Studio, and Jaffe Holden Acoustics for the design and specification of the rigging and automation, lighting control, and audio-video systems. The show’s story line was written by choreographer Jamie King, who danced in Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour. The musical director, Kevin Antunes (New Kids on the Block, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Britney Spears, ‘N Sync, Justin Timberlake), made his selections from “Michael’s entire treasure vault” and remixed it specifically for the show.

  • Cirque Du Soleil Shows and Destinations in 2008-2009
Case study: Tour Planning at Cirque du Soleil Cirque du Soleil is a Canadian entertainment company. It is the largest theatrical producer in the world. Its theatrical, character-driven approach and the absence of performing animals helped define Cirque du Soleil as the contemporary circus ("nouveau cirque") that it remains today. The case is about the opportunity for Cirque du Soleil management, to include in the tour a new destination, Istambul, in the summer 2010. The decision must be done before the end of 2008. 61 Case study: data and information Louise Murray, Vice-President, Tour Planning and Partnerships at Cirque du Soleil received on 23th December 2008 a proposal to include Istanbul, as destination, in the 2010 tour. “A wide range of administrative formalities and tasks must be accomplished to ensure the transfer of material and people to a new show site. The tearing down, repacking, shipping and setting up must all be done in a very precise order. And because each move is to a new site, often in a new country, the experience is unique every time. A technical problem, customs difficulties, a breakdown or bad weather conditions can all lead to costly delays, sometimes even forcing the cancellation of shows.” 62 Case study: data and information “Our shows are not produced independently of each other. A synergy must emerge between these different cultural works. We can see them as a strategic portfolio of cultural products. Ideally, we would be able to present several touring shows in succession in a large city in order to establish our reputation, build an audience and open the way for the establishment of a permanent show.

  • The Art of the Contemporary Circus
SATURDAY, MARCH 1, 2014 SPECIAL INFORMATION FEATURE THE ART OF THE CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS How the spirit of risk- taking and a lack of respect for barriers inspired Quebec’s Cirque du Soleil to unheard-of aesthetic and commercial heights little more than three decades ago, a group of A jugglers, stilt-walkers and accordion-players brought their start-up idea to a Quebec agency and asked for funding for a show about Jacques Cartier’s 1534 arrival in what would be- come Canada. Although turned down, the street performers behind Cirque du Soleil were undaunted, and went straight to then-premier René Lévesque. “That was gutsy and unexpect- ed,” says Louis Patrick Leroux, a playwright and director who holds joint appointments in Concordia University’s departments of Eng- lish and French, and is a leader in the burgeoning field of contempo- rary circus research. The study focuses most closely on the years 1993 – 2012 and the shows that Cirque has produced in Las Vegas. That is easy to say and very hard to execute” - Dawn Hudson (cited in Rastello, 2017) - ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First of all, I would like to thank Santiago Urío for his constant support and guidance, not only throughout the elaboration of this dissertation, but also during the past couple of years. Through his lessons and expertise, I have been able to discover my passion for International Strategy and Business Management, which I hope to develop further during my professional career. In addition, a special thanks to Jesús Méndez for always lending an ear and for encouraging me to strive for excellence and pursue my dreams of working for a major entertainment firm such as Cirque du Soleil. Finally, to my family for their words of encouragement and unconditional support. Thank you for helping me find my way out of the most stressful moments during the year. Abstract With the development of the international business field, the study of location gained importance. It began to distinguish between firms that initiated their internationalisation process to reduce production costs and those that did it in order to access new markets.

PROGRAM CONTENT BIOS: CREATIVE TEAM Chris Lashua, Creative Director / Founder Company founder, Chris Lashua, hails from Boston, Massachusetts, where he spent most of his youth riding on a BMX bike. He was discovered by Cirque du Soleil and created/performed a BMX bike act that was entirely his own. He was then commissioned to build a “German Wheel” piece for the company, cementing his reputation as a visionary of circus gadgetry. His engineering chops and creative energy led him to 'run away' with his own circus company, Cirque Mechanics. Chris believes that innovative mechanical apparatus and the relationship between performer and machine sets his company apart and is at the heart of what makes Cirque Mechanics unique. Chris has delivered on this unique relationship in Birdhouse Factory and Boom Town the company’s two theatrical productions and in Cirque Mechanics for the Orchestra, Chris explored the performer machine relationship with the Gantry Bike, a self-contained, pedal driven mechanical stage, worthy of the grand classical music featured in that show. Once again, Chris continues to build on the might of the Gantry Bike, in Pedal Punk, by adding newly designed, inventive pedal driven devices that interact with the performers. In Pedal Punk, Chris masterfully merges his passion for cycling, circus and all things mechanical in an exceptionally playful and artful way. Aloysia Gavre, Co-Director / Choreographer An original co-director and choreographer of Birdhouse Factory, Boom Town and Cirque Mechanics for the Orchestra, also an early member of the San Francisco based Pickle Family Circus, Aloysia has been a movement, dance and circus enthusiast most of her life.

That it would do so five times and maintain a buzz for fifteen years is astounding. For it to do so with the help of respected art-driven directors René-Richard Cyr, Dominique Champagne, Robert Lepage, Serge Denoncourt and various designers, artisans, and actors from Québec’s “legitimate” theatre scene is quite simply unfathomable. The Cirque built its reputation on a dreamspace, an “imagi-nation,” as Jennifer Harvie and Erin Hurley put it,2 where one can transcend traditional national parameters, where sexless bodies contort before us and artists from across the world unite to tell the non-verbal tale of infinite human potential.
