featuring Nik Wallenda & “Grandma” Welcome to the of 1 Welcome to the On behalf of all the performers, administrative staff, design team and crew, we welcome you to this very special production of the Big Apple Circus. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of a beloved New York City cultural gem that has delighted generations of families during its traditional holiday season at Lincoln Center and cities up and down the East Coast and as far west as Chicago. For two hours, the world inside the Big Top transforms into a colorful kaleidoscope of wonder, amazement and laughter for all to of share. At the Big Apple Circus, we are committed to continuing the outreach programs so every child will have the opportunity to experience the wonder of the Circus. This year we will be expanding the number of shows adapted for children and young adults with Autism as well as those with hearing and visual challenges through our Circus of the Senses. In addition, we continue our commitment to provide children less fortunate the opportunity to attend the circus. Welcome back and enjoy the show. All of us at Big Apple Circus thank you for your support and hope you enjoy the magic and thrill of this special 40th Anniversary Show.

M« Miiiifi eiiHS fllljj 5th Year Ma> 2k, 1976 Number 21 Show Folds in Texas An anticipated circus day at San Antonio (Texas) turned out to be a disappointment for fans and show folks alike. In the midst of a steady rain Circus Galaxy folded in that .city on May 9th. Early this year announcements about the circus indicated it would rival the best shows on the road. Phone crews started their San Antonio promotion about two months ago. While they were vague about the show's name they were positive it was a "large tented show" with the best of everything. CFA's who saw the circus at Victoria described it as "a small show" with no show owned equipment. They called it strictly "a drum and organ show" with the Oscarian Family and some Mexican performers. • Cirque Du Soleil Shows and Destinations in 2008-2009
Case study: Tour Planning at Cirque du Soleil Cirque du Soleil is a Canadian entertainment company. It is the largest theatrical producer in the world. Its theatrical, character-driven approach and the absence of performing animals helped define Cirque du Soleil as the contemporary circus ("nouveau cirque") that it remains today. The case is about the opportunity for Cirque du Soleil management, to include in the tour a new destination, Istambul, in the summer 2010. The decision must be done before the end of 2008. 61 Case study: data and information Louise Murray, Vice-President, Tour Planning and Partnerships at Cirque du Soleil received on 23th December 2008 a proposal to include Istanbul, as destination, in the 2010 tour. “A wide range of administrative formalities and tasks must be accomplished to ensure the transfer of material and people to a new show site. The tearing down, repacking, shipping and setting up must all be done in a very precise order. And because each move is to a new site, often in a new country, the experience is unique every time. A technical problem, customs difficulties, a breakdown or bad weather conditions can all lead to costly delays, sometimes even forcing the cancellation of shows.” 62 Case study: data and information “Our shows are not produced independently of each other. A synergy must emerge between these different cultural works. We can see them as a strategic portfolio of cultural products. Ideally, we would be able to present several touring shows in succession in a large city in order to establish our reputation, build an audience and open the way for the establishment of a permanent show.

  • Lineage Curated by Julia Bullock Soundbox
LINEAGE CURATED BY JULIA BULLOCK SOUNDBOX 1 julia bullock on lineage “I’ve found that musicians often share a lot about the various influences in their lives— whether they be historical, political, philosophical, personal, or based on other mediums of art. They let diverse influences not only impact their work, but find ways to let them register explicitly. It’s like musicians are hyper conscious of their lineage—they honor it and value it. So, as I continue to follow along the path and legacy of artists that came before me, lineage has become increasingly important—it’s a part of knowing from where I originated and letting that inform where I envision myself going. The musicians on this SoundBox program could not make music all together in one place, or even at one time, but the very nature of this program—which links material that spans across almost 900 years—captures an audio and visual snapshot of how lineage can inform, influence, impact, and express itself in a musical context.” 2 Esa-Pekka Salonen SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY MUSIC DIRECTOR San Francisco Symphony Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen has, through his many high-profile conducting roles and work as a leading composer, shaped a unique vision for the present and future of the contemporary symphony orchestra. Salonen is currently the Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor for London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and is Artist in Association at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. He is a member of the faculty of the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where he developed and directs the pre-professional Negaunee Conducting Program.

  • ZAIA: Behind the Scenes Meet the Folks Responsible for the Magic of Cirque Du Soleil Feature Story Feature
FEATURE by Christine Laskowski, “Behind the Scenes” photos by Matthew Niederhauser ZAIA: Behind the Scenes Meet the folks responsible for the magic of Cirque du Soleil Feature Story All stage photography courtesy of Cirque du Soleil t was mid-afternoon when we entered the training room for 专 ZAIA, Cirque du Soleil’s premier show at the Venetian Macau, 题 and I immediately thought of Sisyphus. Situated in the cor- ner was a five-meter pole, on which Chinese acrobats where Iclimbing up and down and up and down, ad infinitum. But this was all in a day’s work for the acrobats in ZAIA’s “Globes and Poles” act, in which eight acrobats in costumes of fluorescent armor stand on large silver balls holding poles upon which the remaining acro- bats jump and catch themselves by their legs, with an enchanting mastery of gravity that has become synonymous with a Cirque du Soleil show. Given the $150 million and three years of preparation on ZAIA, I have to say it has been money and time well spent. It’s a show that successfully transports you into its dream realm from the moment you walk through the hall into the theater, which is designed to re- semble a telescope aimed at the cosmos. With the stage as a focal point, set up like a precisely orchestrated master shot, the show extends beyond the stage and into, as well as above, the audience, as dancers frozen in blocks of ice and upside-down cyclists move gracefully toward the stage from the periphery.
