  • Obama Leads in Both VA and NC
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 10, 2012 INTERVIEWS: Tom Jensen 919-744-6312 IF YOU HAVE BASIC METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS, PLEASE E-MAIL [email protected], OR CONSULT THE FINAL PARAGRAPH OF THE PRESS RELEASE Obama leads in both VA and NC Raleigh, N.C. – For all the twists and turns of his presidency and his re-election campaign so far, President Obama finds himself in very similar shape in two states he surprised the world by winning four years ago as he was then. Obama has retaken a narrow lead in North Carolina a month after having ceded his edge over Mitt Romney for the first time since last October. In early June, PPP showed Romney with a two-point edge in the crucial Tar Heel State (48-46). But now Obama leads by one point (47-46) in a state he took by less than a point four years ago. Meanwhile, Obama is up eight points in N.C.’s northern neighbor Virginia (50-42). He topped Romney by an identical margin when PPP last polled the Old Dominion in April (51-43), and beat John McCain by only six points there. This slight regression in Romney’s fortunes in North Carolina comes as the Obama campaign has hit the Republican candidate repeatedly over his tenure at Bain Capital. 40% of Tar Heel voters say what they know of Romney’s time there makes them feel more negatively about him, with only 29% saying it makes them more positive toward him. 27% say Romney’s Bain record makes no difference to them.

April 21, 2012 [DEMOCRACY IN ACTION TRANSCRIPT] video First, I want to say thanks so much to all of you who worked hard and supported me in this nomination battle for the presidency of the United States under the Constitution Party label. When you win by one vote, you know every vote counts. I want to say to those that also ran for your nomination that it was an honor to be associated with Darrell Castle and I want to thank again Joan and Darrell for all that they have done over the years for the Constitution Party. [applause] And Robbie Wells. Is Robbie here? Robbie. Thank you. [applause] The energy and enthusiasm exhibited by Robbie Wells on this campaign have been tremendous and if he will continue to work with us, if we don't get to the top of the hill this time, we will get to the top of the hill in 2016. [applause] I also want to recognize Susan Ducey and thank her for her campaign and for sharing with us her life story which every person should hear and listen to because it is a true pulling yourself up by the bootstraps story under the free enterprise system. Susan, thank you so much. [applause] I'm not sure whether Laurie Roth is still here, but I want to express appreciation to Laurie for focusing on issues and, and for having the presence that a radio talk show host has, and I hope I can call her up and get some pointers for jazzing up a crowd and going with a few well-placed reasonable zingers that would surely get you on radio and television.

  • The Opponents of Virginia's Massive Resistance
A RUMBLING IN THE MUSEUI^t: THE OPPONENTS OF VIRGINIA'S MASSIVE RESISTANCE James Howard Hershman, Jr. Leesburg, Virginia B.A., Lynchburg College, 1969 M.A., Wake Forest University, 1971 A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Corcoran Department of History University of Virginia August, 1978 0 Copyright by James Howard Hershman, Jr 1978 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT A Rumbling in the Museum: The Opponents of Virginia's Massive Resistance James Howard Hershman, Jr. University of Virginia, 1978 This dissertation is a study of the blacks and white liberals and moderates who opposed Virginia's policy of mas- sive resistance to the United States Supreme Court's school desegregation ruling in the Brown case. The origin of and continued demand for desegregation came from black Virginians who were challenging an oppressive racial caste system that greatly limited their freedom as American citizens. In the 1930's they b^gan demanding teacher salaries and school facilities equal to their white counter- parts. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People provided lawyers and organizational assistance as the school protests became a mass movement among black Virginians. In 1951, the protest became an attack on public school segre- gation itself. /V The Brown decision and the response to it split white opinion into three groups. A few white liberals publicly ac- cepted racial integration as good; extreme segregationists vehemently rejected any change in the racial caste system; a third group occupied the more complex middle or moderate posi- tion.
