  • Anti-Trafficking Coalition FOSTA Letter to US House of Representatives
January 16, 2018 The Honorable Paul Ryan, Speaker U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20510-0001 The Honorable Kevin McCarthy, Majority Leader U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20510-0001 Dear Mr. Speaker and MaJority Leader McCarthy: We write as organizations and individuals working to end human trafficking with allies across the country, including Wisconsin and California, and concerned citizens who respect the pressures you face conducting the nation’s business. But the issue we write about is literally a matter of life and death. Last month in Portland Oregon, the family of a 24-year old mother, murdered on Christmas by a man who bought her for sex on Backpage.com, sued the website for allowing sex trafficking in its ads. 1 The case is similar to testimony heard by the Senate Commerce Committee from the mother of a 16-year-old daughter murdered by a man who bought her via Backpage.com on Christmas Eve. 2 Congress granted victims of human trafficking a private right of action under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) of 2003 to provide protection and to help prevent this despicable crime. Yet court after court, has ruled the Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996 shields Internet Service Providers like Backpage.com from accountability. As a result, online trafficking has surged, online entities continue to facilitate trafficking with impunity, and victims have no effective legal redress. The First Circuit Court of Appeals pointedly stated, “[T]he remedy is through legislation.” 3 1 http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2017/12/family_of_woman_killed_in_port.html# 2 https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/true-crime/wp/2017/09/19/mother-of-slain-teen-makes-tearful-plea- for-congress-to-amend-internet-law/ 3 http://media.ca1.uscourts.gov/pdf.opinions/15-1724P-01A.pdf However, in the strong opinion of the undersigned organizations, the remedy is not the Substitute to HR 1865, Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA), approved by the House Judiciary Committee on December 12, 2017.

  • Activist Literacy and Dr. Jill Stein's 2012 Green Party Campaign
45 Recognizing the Rhetorics of Feminist Action: Activist Literacy and Dr. Jill Stein’s 2012 Green Party Campaign Virginia Crisco Abstract: Scholars such as Nancy Welch and Susan Jarratt argue that Neoliberalism shapes how everyday citizens are able to take action. Using what Jacquelyn Jones Royster and Gesa Kirsch call “social circulation,” I analyze how Dr. Jill Stein, the presidential candidate for the Green Party in 2012, used “whatever spaces are left” to challenge the dominant two party system, particularly in relation to the pres- idential debates. I argue that Stein demonstrates an activist literacy disposition that positions her to use the spaces, the literate and rhetorical means, and oppor- tunities for storytelling to foster social action in our neoliberal climate. Keywords: neoliberalism, social circulation, activist literacy, third party politics In Living Room: Teaching Public Writing in a Privatized World, Nancy Welch argues that neoliberalism has changed not only the topics available for public discussion in the pursuit of making socio-political change, but the venues for having those discussions, as they have also become increasingly privatized. As an example, Welch refects on her experiences advocating for her husband’s health care to their insurance company. She describes the multiple letters she had gotten from her insurance company saying their appeal for his care had been denied, using the same phrases again and again, as if her carefully re- searched and rhetorical letters were not even being read. This leads Welch to question the amount of power we as teachers and scholars of writing give to language and rhetoric: These are rhetorical strategies that, mostly in the abstract, have given me comfort – comfort in the belief that I really can wield power in language, that I can empower my students, particularly those subor- dinate by gender, race, sexuality, and class, to do the same.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 10, 2012 INTERVIEWS: Tom Jensen 919-744-6312 IF YOU HAVE BASIC METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS, PLEASE E-MAIL [email protected], OR CONSULT THE FINAL PARAGRAPH OF THE PRESS RELEASE Obama leads in both VA and NC Raleigh, N.C. – For all the twists and turns of his presidency and his re-election campaign so far, President Obama finds himself in very similar shape in two states he surprised the world by winning four years ago as he was then. Obama has retaken a narrow lead in North Carolina a month after having ceded his edge over Mitt Romney for the first time since last October. In early June, PPP showed Romney with a two-point edge in the crucial Tar Heel State (48-46). But now Obama leads by one point (47-46) in a state he took by less than a point four years ago. Meanwhile, Obama is up eight points in N.C.’s northern neighbor Virginia (50-42). He topped Romney by an identical margin when PPP last polled the Old Dominion in April (51-43), and beat John McCain by only six points there. This slight regression in Romney’s fortunes in North Carolina comes as the Obama campaign has hit the Republican candidate repeatedly over his tenure at Bain Capital. 40% of Tar Heel voters say what they know of Romney’s time there makes them feel more negatively about him, with only 29% saying it makes them more positive toward him. 27% say Romney’s Bain record makes no difference to them.
