Georgian Country and Culture Guide მშვიდობის კორპუსი საქართველოში Peace Corps Georgia 2017 Forward What you have in your hands right now is the collaborate effort of numerous Peace Corps Volunteers and staff, who researched, wrote and edited the entire book. The process began in the fall of 2011, when the Language and Cross-Culture component of Peace Corps Georgia launched a Georgian Country and Culture Guide project and PCVs from different regions volunteered to do research and gather information on their specific areas. After the initial information was gathered, the arduous process of merging the researched information began. Extensive editing followed and this is the end result. The book is accompanied by a CD with Georgian music and dance audio and video files. We hope that this book is both informative and useful for you during your service. 1/5 Master's in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene PRÉSENTATION Suffering from long-standing conflicts, chronic water shortages and the consequences of climate change, the Middle East faces immense humanitarian needs, especially regarding water, sanitation and hygiene. These requirements are seen as one of the main priorities for most countries in the region. In Syria and Yemen, over 30 million people have been affected this year, as much of the local infrastructure has been damaged. Making training programmes accessible in this region of the world is therefore a critically important issue. In order to address these needs, the German-Jordanian University, Action Against Hunger, a leading international NGO in this field, and Bioforce are launching the first humanitarian master’s in water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) in the Middle East. From next September, the future WaSH managers in these areas devastated by several years of conflict will contribute to the development of the operational capacity of humanitarian organisations. The extension features in the latest edition (ANGLE 4) and is briefly outlined. “Discretization” of reference efficiency curve (REC), meaning possibility of using ANGLE 4 for a particular gamma-energies without constructing the complete REC, is particularly emphasized. This yields both enhanced practicality and higher accuracy, while reducing the potential for systematic errors. The present work is primarily focussed on experimental verification of ANGLE 4 for NaI detectors. Two detectors (2 ×2 and 3 ×3 inches) were employed in the experiment. Commercially calibrated gamma-sources (in forms of quasi-point and cylinder) and home made solutions (diluted from calibrated ones) were counted on various distances from the detector(s), ranging 0 – 20 cm. Energy range observed was 59 – 1408 keV. Versatility of counting conditions, in terms of detectors and sources used, gamma-energies observed, source-detector separations, etc., was aimed at creating as large experimental evidence as possible for verification purposes.

THE REFLECTION OF THE ETHNICAL TERMS “CAUCASUS” AND “CAUCASIAN” IN GEORGIAN LITERATURE Irma Ratiani Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Shota Rustaveli Intitute of Georgian Literature I. Chavchavadze av. 1, Tbilisi, Georgia Telephone (+995 32)99 53 00 E-mail: [email protected] Received on 11 April, 2011; accepted on 27 December, 2012 Abstract. Contemporary Georgian Literature offers interesting interpretations of the terms “Caucasus” and “Caucasian,” but the discussion about this problem was started much earlier, in the beginning of 19th century, when the livening up of the ethnical concepts of “Caucasus” and “Caucasian” was witnessed in Georgian literature and public thinking. The historical shift of Georgia into the new epoch of colonialism, which can alternatively be called “The Epoch of Russian Colonialism”, caused the accentuation of the above mentioned concepts. Russia used the privilege of the orthodox country, confronted Georgians with non- Christian people of the Caucasus and deprived them from their political independence. The reaction of Georgians towards Russian colonialism was characterized by double standards, which were clearly reflected in Georgian literature of the period of Romanticism, first of all, in relation to the interpretation of the concepts “Caucasus” and “Caucasian.” The genuine goal of the colonial policy and their social strategies were pointed out clearly in the 1850–60s. The Georgians’ response to colonialism was modified and the previous ambivalent status was replaced by the radical confrontation: the main goal became the idea of the peaceful Caucasus on the condition of protection of national identities.
