This literature has largely focused on the way museums presented this knowledge to the public, not how audiences reacted to claims of scientific authority. Popular reaction to pseudoscientific claims demonstrated to the public in the scientific context of museums, in this case Charles Redheffer's 1812 perpetual motion device and P. T. Barnum's Fejee Mermaid, shed light on the close relationship between early popular scientific observation and ways of judging authenticity and deception in the commercial and social realms of the antebellum period. Today millions of tourists walk the freedom trail with Paul Revere’s famous ride galloping through their heads. APPENDIX I P. T. BARNUM: HUMBUG AND REALITY s a candidate for the father of American show business, Barnum’s Awider significance is still being quarried by those with an interest in social and cultural history. The preceding chapters have shown how vari- ety, animal exhibits, circus acts, minstrelsy, and especially freak shows, owe much of their subsequent momentum to his popularization of these amusement forms. For, while Barnum has long been associated in popular memory solely with the circus business, his overall career as an entertainment promoter embraced far more than the celebrated ringmas- ter figure of present-day public estimation. Barnum saw himself as “the museum man” for the better part of his long show business career, following his successful management of the American Museum from the 1840s to the 1860s. To repeat, for all Barnum’s reputation today as a “circus man,” he saw himself first and foremost as a museum proprietor, one who did much to promote and legitimize the display of “human curiosities.”1 While the emergence of an “American” national consciousness has been dated to the third quarter of the eighteenth century, Barnum’s self- presentation was central to the cultural formation of a particular middle- class American sense of identity in the second half of the nineteenth century (see chapter 1), as well as helping to shape the new show business ethos. Over time, he also became an iconic or referential figure in the wider culture, with multiple representations in cinematic, theatrical, and literary form (see below).Yet was Barnum really the cultural pacesetter as he is often presented in popular biographical writing, not to mention his own self-aggrandizing prose. -

Barnum Research Collection represents archival materials collected by the Bridgeport History Center over the years relating to the life and ventures of P.T. Barnum. Barnum himself was deeply connected to Bridgeport, building four homes there, serving as mayor, and hosting his circus' Winter Quarters in the city. As a result, this collection represents both national and local history. The series in the collection relate to his personal life, the American Museum, Barnum's circus ventures, Jumbo the Elephant, Jenny Lind, and Charles S. Stratton and Lavinia Warren. Each series contains manuscript material including an extensive correspondence series in Barnum’s own hand, programs, tickets, artifacts, illustrations, and photographs, as well as clippings and examples of promotional material in the form of booklets, trading cards, and even paper dolls. This collection is artificial, and has grown over the years. The series themselves were formed by researcher needs, and as such have been kept intact at the time of arrangement. Historical Inquiry into the Role of Education in Barnum’s American Museum Lisa Rochelle Murray, MA The University of Texas at Austin, 2009 Supervisor: Paul Bolin This study of P.T. Barnum’s American Museum challenges readers to examine Barnum in a new light. An argument is made that P.T. Barnum was a successful museum educator whose philosophies and actions align with three modern museum education discourses: free-choice learning, constructivism, and edutainment. These findings challenge the commonly-held belief that Barnum was simply a showman, best known for his work in the circus and for a quote that has been mis-attributed to him that, “there’s a sucker born every minute.” v The research undertaken for this investigation focuses on museums and education in the nineteenth century. This study presents a brief history of the emergence of museums in America, spanning the years 1782–1841. -

PREFACE This book is my recollections of forty busy years. Few men in civil life have had a career more crowded with incident, enterprise, and various inter- course with the world than mine. With the alternations of success and de- feat, extensive travel in this and foreign lands; a large acquaintance with the humble and honored; having held the preeminent place among all who have sought to furnish healthful entertainment to the American people, and, therefore, having had opportunities for garnering an ample storehouse of incident and anecdote, while, at the same time, needing a sagacity, energy, foresight and fortitude rarely required or exhibited in financial affairs, my struggles and experiences (it is not altogether vanity in me to think) can not be without interest to my fellow countrymen. Various leading publishers have solicited me to place at their disposal my recollections of what I have been, and seen, and done. These proposals, to- gether with the partiality of friends and kindred, have constrained me, now that I have retired from all active participation in business, to put in a per- manent form what, it seems to me, may be instructive, entertaining and profitable. Fifteen years since, for the purpose, principally, of advancing my inter- ests as proprietor of the American Museum, I gave to the press some per- sonal reminiscences and sketches. -

The Drunkard’s Directions: Mapping Urban Space in the Antebellum Temperance Drama michael d’alessandro HEN William H. Smith’s temperance melodrama The W Drunkard premiered at Moses Kimball’s Boston Mu- seum in 1844,theBoston Daily Atlas reported that the play “cannot be witnessed without exciting the deepest emotions. It is just such a representation as our mixed population need [sic]; furnishing a worthy entertainment with good instruc- tion.”1 Such praise was not, however, universal. Reviewing an 1850 production of the play at P. T. Barnum’s American Mu- seum in New York, the International Monthly Magazine of Literature, Science, and Art deemed The Drunkard a“dis- gustingly vulgar and brutalizing piece . in which the chief characters appear in all the stages of degradation.” “With all its pretensions to morality,” the commentator concluded, “the play is irredeemably bad and base.”2 Despite their differing opinions about how well the play fulfilled its aims, both writers identified its ambition to offer “good instruction” as centered on the specific dangers of drinking. As an extension of this educational goal, the play imparts simultaneous lessons on the broader perils of urbanity and engaging with the city at large. Detractors had reason to be concerned about the influence of The Drunkard. Breaking box office records, it drew un- precedented audiences to theatres at the Boston Museum in 1Boston Daily Atlas, 5 March 1844,p.2.
