AURA/NOAO FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT FY 2010 Revised Submitted to the National Science Foundation March 16, 2011 This image, aimed toward the southern celestial pole atop the CTIO Blanco 4-m telescope, shows the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Milky Way (Carinae Region) and the Coal Sack (dark area, close to the Southern Crux). The 33 “written” on the Schmidt Telescope dome using a green laser pointer during the two-minute exposure commemorates the rescue effort of 33 miners trapped for 69 days almost 700 m underground in the San Jose mine in northern Chile. Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser, Meade gegen Celestron, das ist das große Duell der beiden Teleskopgiganten aus Amerika. Wir sind stolz darauf, als erste deutschsprachige Zeitschrift einen fairen Zweikampf der weltgröß- ten Fernrohrhersteller anbieten zu können; un- getrübt von wirtschaftlichen oder redaktionellen Vorbehalten. Dazu haben wir die neuen aufre- genden GPS-Teleskope von Meade und Celes- tron in einem Produktvergleich gegenüberge- stellt. Im ersten Teil in diesem Heft erfahren Sie mehr über Mechanik und Elektronik der beiden Computerteleskope (Seite 60); die Ergebnisse der Praxis unter den Sternen lesen Sie dann in einem kommenden Heft. Mit interstellarum 25 schließen wir den ersten Jahrgang der neuen interstellarum-Hefte ab. Ein Plus von 30% bei den Abonnentenzahlen spricht für unseren Weg, den wir konsequent fortsetzen Polarlichter in Deutschland (Foto: Thomas Jäger) werden. You may have noticed that this newsletter is showing up a little bit later than usual, and it’s for good reason: release of the newsletter will now happen after the monthly business meeting so that we can have a chance to keep everybody up to date on the latest information. Sometimes, this will mean the newsletter shows up a couple of days late. But, the upshot is that you’ll now be able to see what we discussed at the recent business meeting and have time to digest it before our general meeting in case you want to give some feedback. Now that we’re on the new format, business meetings (and the oft neglected Light Pollution Committee Meeting), are going to start being open to all members of the club again by simply joining up in the respective chat rooms the Wednesday before the first Monday of the month—which I encourage people to do, especially if you have some ideas you want to see the club put into action. -

The Terms of Reference and membership for WG Star Names (WGSN) are provided at the IAU website: https://www.iau.org/science/scientific_bodies/working_groups/280/. WGSN was re-proposed to Division C and was approved in April 2019 as a functional WG whose scope extends beyond the normal 3-year cycle of IAU working groups. The WGSN was specifically called out on p. 22 of IAU Strategic Plan 2020-2030: “The IAU serves as the internationally recognised authority for assigning designations to celestial bodies and their surface features. To do so, the IAU has a number of Working Groups on various topics, most notably on the nomenclature of small bodies in the Solar System and planetary systems under Division F and on Star Names under Division C.” WGSN continues its long term activity of researching cultural astronomy literature for star names, and researching etymologies with the goal of adding this information to the WGSN’s online materials. -

If we keep selling tickets like we have been we might be able to draw for the winner at the October BRAS meeting. Remember, $5 per ticket or 5 for $20. In the meantime we will continue to draw for other prizes. This will allow you to pick from an assortment of prizes and still have your ticket in the drawing for the solar scope. As you probably heard our former Outreach Coordinator (OC) Trevor McGuire moved to North Dakota. That leaves the position open. The OC’s role is to be the focal point of communication for outreach activities and requests for BRAS volunteers from outside groups. That usually takes the form of some organization, a scout or school group for example, requesting someone from BRAS to do a presentation or to bring scopes to allow their members or guests to view he skies. It doesn’t mean you have to do the event yourself or even organize the event. It just means you act as a liaison between BRAS and the community. Trevor set up a BRAS Outreach email address to receive requests. He also created a contact group so that once you have the details, you could send an email request for manpower to the group. -

We report the discovery of CoRoT-8b, a dense small Saturn-class exoplanet that orbits a K1 dwarf in 6.2 days, and we derive its orbital parameters, mass, and radius. Methods. We analyzed two complementary data sets: the photometric transit curve of CoRoT-8b as measured by CoRoT and the radial velocity curve of CoRoT-8 as measured by the HARPS spectrometer??. Results. We find that CoRoT-8b is on a circular orbit with a semi-major axis of 0:063 ± 0:001 AU. It has a radius of 0:57 ± 0:02 RJ, a mass of −3 0:22 ± 0:03 MJ, and therefore a mean density of 1:6 ± 0:1 g cm . -

Throughout the Milky Way, DM can scatter, become captured, deposit annihilation energy, and increase the heat flow within exoplanets. We estimate upcoming infrared telescope sensitivity to this scenario, finding actionable discovery or exclusion searches. We find that DM with masses above about an MeV can be probed with exoplanets, with DM-proton and DM-electron scattering cross sections down to about 10−37cm2, stronger than existing limits by up to six orders of magnitude. Supporting evidence of a DM origin can be identified through DM-induced exoplanet heating correlated with Galactic position, and hence DM density. This provides new motivation to measure the temperature of the billions of brown dwarfs, rogue planets, and gas giants peppered throughout our Galaxy. Introduction{Are we alone in the Universe? Several hot topics such as the Li problems, critical nuclear reactions and properties in stars, properties of dense matter, r-process nucleosynthesis, and ν-process nucleosynthesis are chosen and discussed in further details. Some future Asian facilities, together with physics perspectives, are introduced. See past issues back to 2009 at http://brastro.org/newsletters.html Newsletter of the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society September 2017 The Great American Eclipse is now a fond memory for our Baton Rouge community. No ornery clouds or“washout”; virtually the entire three-hour duration had an unobstructed view of the Sun. Over an hour before the start of the event, we sold 196 solar viewers in thirty-five minutes. Several families and children used cereal box viewers; many, many people were here for the first time. We utilized the Coronado Solar Max II solar telescope and several nighttime telescopes, each outfitted with either a standard eyepiece or a “sun funnel”—a modified oil funnel that projects light sent through the scope tube to fabric stretched across the front of the funnel. We provided live feeds on the main floor from NASA and then, ABC News. The official count at 1089 patrons makes this the best- attended event in HRPO’s twenty years save for the historic Mars Opposition of 2003.
