Olney Hymns: a documentary footnote ROBIN A. LEAVER To mark the bicentenary of the publication of Olney Hymns, I wrote a two-part article which explored the origins and influence of this important collection of hymns, a direct product of the evangelical movement of the eighteenth century. 1 In the course of studying the interrelationships between various hymn books produced and used by Anglican evangelicals during this period, I recently came across a lesser-known collection of hymns which throws more light on the origins of the Olney Hymns by John Newton and William Cowper: Sacred Hymns for the Children of God, As they journey to their Rest Above, by John Henry Langley. Oliver, Otridge & Watts, London 1776, 120. Neither the author nor the collection are noted in Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology, and the only reference to either I have discovered in hymnological handbooks is in Gadsby's Memoirs of the Principal Hymn-Writers and Compilers. According to Gadsby, Langley (1753- 1792) was 'one of the early Calvinist Methodist preachers'2 associated with the Countess of Huntingdon. The collection itself is respectfully dedicated to the Countess, and Langley clearly moved in the circle of evangelicals associated with her chapels. Among the subscribers to Langley's Sacred Hymns were the Revd Rowland and the Revd Walter Shirley. 3 Another subscriber is listed thus: 'Wm Cooper, Esq. 4 Books'. 4 This is probably William Cowper of Olney, for that is how he pro nounced his name. 5 The author's lengthy preface, to which is appended' An Earnest and Familiar Address to Young Men', is dated 19 April1776, that is, three years before the publication of Olney Hymns. -

Leaders and church members from across Wisconsin, as well as family and friends of the Bishop, came to welcome him back to our Con- ference as our leader and listen to his humble words of inspiration. “It is my great privilege and honor to be installed today as a servant leader in the Wisconsin Conference,” he said. In his sermon, Bishop Jung spoke of God’s living waters: a river “so amazing and deep and wide, and includes all people, without negation and without rejec- tion.” He talked about his vision for the Church, one which celebrates diversity without hesitation, and focuses on bringing new members in all the time. As a sign of his servant leadership, Bishop performed a feet washing cere- mony by washing the feet of Conference Lay Leader Deanna Shimko before com- munion. “In that moment, I was so honored and humbled,” Shimko said. “It truly shows how dedicated our new Bishop is and how lucky we are to have him here.” The service, which more than 200 people attended, demonstrated an out- ABOVE: Conference leaders and Bishop Jung celebrate his ABOVE: Bishop Jung performed a pouring of support for Bishop Jung, including special guests such as a choir from Installation Service. -

ABSTRACT Liang Fa’s Quanshi liangyan and Its Impact on the Taiping Movement Sukjoo Kim, Ph.D. Mentor: Rosalie Beck, Ph.D. Scholars of the Taiping Movement have assumed that Liang Fa’s Quanshi liangyan 勸世良言 (Good Words to Admonish the Age, being Nine Miscellaneous Christian Tracts) greatly influenced Hong Xiuquan, but very little has been written on the role of Liang’s work. The main reason is that even though hundreds of copies were distributed in the early nineteenth century, only four survived the destruction which followed the failure of the Taiping Movement. This dissertation therefore explores the extent of the Christian influence of Liang’s nine tracts on Hong and the Taiping Movement. This study begins with an introduction to China in the nineteenth century and the early missions of western countries in China. The second chapter focuses on the life and work of Liang. His religious background was in Confucianism and Buddhism, but when he encountered Robert Morrison and William Milne, he identified with Christianity. The third chapter discusses the story of Hong especially examining Hong’s acquisition of Liang’s Quanshi liangyan and Hong’s revelatory dream, both of which serve as motives for the establishment of the Society of God Worshippers and the Taiping Movement. The fourth chapter develops Liang’s key ideas from his Quanshi liangyan and compares them with Hong’s beliefs, as found in official documents of the Taipings. The fifth chapter describes Hong’s beliefs and the actual practices of the Taiping Movement and compares them with Liang’s key ideas. -

Toulouse Received: 10 January 2016; Accepted: 15 March 2016; Published: 18 March 2016 Abstract: Images of Jesus Christ played an important role in the emergence of Christian spirituality in Ming and Qing China. Of the great many images that we know from this period, this paper introduces five of them: Jesus as infant, criminal, gate, brother, and pig. The paper unfolds the historical, anthropological, and theological layers of these images to reveal the original tension between Christian spirituality and Chinese culture. The central thesis of the paper therefore is that this tension is reflected in the images of Jesus Christ and, moreover, that analyzing this tension allows us to achieve a more profound understanding of the emergence of Christian spirituality in Ming, Qing, and perhaps even today’s China. Introduction What would you think upon seeing Jesus depicted as a Chinese, more specifically, as a Confucius teacher? At least to Western people with no particular knowledge of Christian history, such an image would likely appear strange. Was this how Chinese people reacted to images of Jesus Christ that were presented to them in the long history of Christian missions in China? What was the image Chinese people themselves made of Jesus Christ’s person? These are but a few basic questions that we can ask about the images of Jesus Christ that circulated in Ming and Qing China. -
