Black and Professor Jane Hwang Degenhardt My dissertation proposes a new context for reading early modern devotional writing’s rich engagement with the language of the body in its focus on the relationship between gendered representations of devotional desire and spiritual ability in the religious poetry of seventeenth-century England. By tracing how somatic speech and bodily conditions are portrayed in the devotional poetry of John Milton, Richard Crashaw, Thomas Traherne, and An Collins, this project examines how these writers fashion spiritual states through the language of a sometime sorrowful and sometime ecstatic, but always desiring body. My project reveals how early modern authors manipulate or respond to gendered and bodily hierarchies to craft liturgically rich devotional scenes that exceed and overwhelm sensations of spiritual lack written on and within the bodies of the devotional figures presented therein. Through my focus on the body of the text and also the ways in which bodies are represented within devotional texts, I posit a new way of looking at early modern devotional writing: as prosthetics. The term prosthesis is most often associated with a medical appendage supplementing a bodily lack, but my project takes seriously the animating capacity of language as I demonstrate the ways in which early vi modern devotional writing exhibits a “prosthetic impulse” that blurs mind-body divides via the amplified register of highly affective somatic speech. Far from mere metaphor, this dissertation shows how the prosthetized devotional text materializes and makes known the spiritual abilities of authors who actively frame divine desire around bodies in opposition to the normative cisgendered and ableist body so widely celebrated in religious discourses of the period. Reading devotional texts as prosthetics that supplement the spiritual lack experienced by early modern believers struggling to articulate their relationship with the divine reveals the problematic interplay between self and society in its blurring of the boundaries between immaterial soul, the material body, and the literal pages before us. With the telephone he can hear at distance which would be unattainable… Man has, as it were, become a kind of prosthetic God. When he puts on all of his auxiliary organs, he is truly magnificent; but those organs have not grown on to him and they still give him much trouble at times. —Freud, Civilization and its Discontents1 In the epigraph above, Sigmund Freud suggests that technological innovation is tantamount to godliness. Our technologies allow us to conquer time, space, and also extend the range of our bodily abilities beyond what was previously thought possible. As each piece of adaptive technology allows us to more fully master our bodies and the material world that surrounds us, human beings become less creatures of the earth and increasingly godlike. The psychic unity and sense of autonomous agency Freud alludes to in the claim that mankind is “a kind of prosthetic God” rests entirely on the plethora of auxiliary devices that supplement humanity’s shortcomings and emphasize our lack of wholeness. So their marriage refers to the mystical union between the individual soul and the Word of God. Richard Crashaw’s famous Baroque poem “The Flaming Heart” illustrates the expectation and desire that Saint Teresa of Avila has towards her divine spouse. It also describes the raptures that the saint experiences after she has mystical union with God. To Crashaw, St. Teresa’s love to God is very similar to the love between the bride and bridegroom in the Song of Songs. By showing her ardent love, our love towards God has been kindled. DAVIS Under the direction of Dr. Paul Voss ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to realign Richard Crashaw’s aesthetic orientation with a broadly conceptualized genre of seventeenth-century devotional, or meditative, poetry. This realignment clarifies Crashaw’s worth as a poet within the Renaissance canon and helps to dismantle historicist and New Historicist readings that characterize him as a literary anomaly. The methodology consists of an expanded definition of meditative poetry, based primarily on Louis Martz’s original interpretation, followed by a series of close readings executed to show continuity between Crashaw and his contemporaries, not discordance. The thesis concludes by expanding the genre of seventeenth-century devotional poetry to include Edward Taylor, who despite his Puritanism, also exemplifies many of the same generic attributes as Crashaw. To these last we reply that this is indeed the body, the visible part of the liturgy. But we must bear in mind that the liturgy has also a soul, which is invisible and for that reason, alas, too often ignored. Important for seventeenth-century English literary studies, this first scholarly edition of Crashaw’s verse since George Walton Williams’s Complete Poetry of Richard Crashaw (1970) revivifies his unfortunately neglected metaphysical poetry for the twenty-first century. Though Crashaw occasioned some panic among the Anglo-American literary academy in the past century, the grounds on which he was then marginalized, as his new editor Richard Rambuss argues, now seem narrow-minded, arbitrary, and dated. This poet needs serious and sympathetic revaluation which Rambuss greatly facilitates. Crashaw wrote Latin as well as English poetry. Aside from an early vol- ume of Latin poetry on sacred themes (1634), in Crashaw’s own time his verse was published in three overlapping collections, mainly in English but also in Latin: Steps to the Temple: Sacred Poems, with Other Delights of the Muses (London, 1646); an eponymous revised and expanded second edition (London, 1648); and a Catholicized repackaging of Steps to the Temple’s sacred verse, Carmen Deo Nostro (Paris, 1652), newly illustrated with twelve engravings (in- cluding two often attributed to Crashaw himself). He was apparently unable to supervise these editions, for he had fled to the Continent around 1644 to avoid Puritan religious persecution, and died in 1649. Rambuss’s edition focuses on the English verse from both the 1646 and 1652 volumes; the latter presents its poems largely as they appear in the re- vised Steps of 1648, but with numerous significant variants.

Yeo "Imagining Unity" investigates how an evolving concept of transcendence in early modem England, influenced by Reformation and counter-Reformation theology, created new ways of responding affectively and philosophically to emerging articulations of national identity in British devotional poetry. My project focuses on a series of politically disruptive moments in the seventeenth century-from the residual trauma of the Protestant Reformation to the Civil War of the 1640's-that troubled England's developing sense of national identity. In the shadow ofthese troubles, devotional poets reworked ideas of transcendence that they had inherited from medieval Catholicism to provide a sense of national cohesion in the midst of a changing political landscape. This dissertation explores transcendence as it is reconceived by four different authors: John Donne's work translates Catholic iconography to symbolize the ascension of a Protestant England; Aemelia Lanyer's poetry appeals to the exclusivity of religious esotericism as a palliative for the actual exclusion of women from political life; Richard Crashaw's writings reinterpret mystical union to rescue sovereignty from failure; and John Milton's work revises transubstantiation to authorize a new republic.

Donne is the founder of the Metaphysical school of poetry, who led the revolt against the conventional poetry of the Spenserians. Donne was the leaving force in the rise of the style and its most consistent and extreme adherent. Metaphysical poetry began in the Jacobean age, in the last of the age of Shakespeare. Donne was the leader and founder of the metaphysical school of poetry. The Metaphysical poets were men of learning and to show their learning was their chief object. In Metaphysical poetry we come across obscure and recondite refrences and the vast learning is twisted in such a manner that it becomes very difficult for a reader to follow what the poet really intends to say. Metaphysical poetry was purely intellectual and made an appeal to the intellectuals. Donne was the great Metaphysical poet who taught his followers to indulge in conceits and witticism in poetry, conceit is an instrument by which a metaphysical poet reveals his wit. Conceit is a literary term which means a strained or far fetched comparison of literary figure. Conceits were also employed by Elizabethan poets and dramatist but those were commonly in the nature of ornamentation. Most of the metaphysical are often called mystical poets. In the poetry of Donne, Herbert, Crashaw, Vaughan and Traherne there is an expression of a communion with God. The Elizabethan style of poetry was clear.

    CHAPTER SIX DIVINE INFATUATION CRASHAW AND M!RÄ~ BÄ! The spiritual ardour of the Counter-Reformation and the literary influence of the Italian Baroque, which merged in the writings of Robert Southwell, are more marked in the poetry of Richard Crashaw. Both poets were as much influenced by the Christian meditative tradition, which gave rise to the M.E. devotional lyrics, as they were by the themes and techniques of Tansillo and Marino. It has been shown how Southwell combined the warm humanity of the M. E. lyrics with theological concern in his treatment of the Nativity. The same thing may be observed in Crashaw's A Hymne of the. Nativity, Sung by the Shepherds (1646), in which the focus is the Virgin and her "fair-ey'd Boy" worshipped by the shepherds. There is present in this earlier version of 1646 the medieval concreteness of the compositio Joci with a reference to the conventional lullaby and motherly solicitude and tenderness: The Babe no sooner 'gan to seeke, Where to lay his lovely head, But streight his eyes advis'd his Cheeke, 'Twixt Mothers Brests to goe to bed. Sweet choise <said n no way but so, Not to Iye cold, yet sleepe in snow.     THE POETICS OF CONVERSION IN EARLY MODERN ENGLISH LITERATURE Christians in post-Reformation England inhabited a culture of conversion. Required to choose among rival forms of worship, many would cross – and often recross – the boundary between Protestantism and Catholicism. This study considers the poetry written by such converts, from the reign of Elizabeth I to that of James II, concentrat- ing on four figures: John Donne, William Alabaster, Richard Crashaw, and John Dryden. Murray offers a context for each poet’s conversion within the era’s polemical and controversial literature. She also elaborates on the formal features of the poems themselves, dem- onstrating how the language of poetry could express both spiritual and ecclesiastical change with particular vividness and power.
