SAFE RIDING 101 Rules of the Road FOLLOW THE LAW Your safety and image of bicyclists depend on you. Obey traffic signals and stop signs. Ride with traffic; use the rightmost lane headed in the direction you are going.

BE PREDICTABLE Make your intentions clear to everyone on the road. Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars. Signal turns, and check behind you well before turning or changing lanes.

BE CONSPICUOUS Ride where people can see you and wear bright . Make eye contact with others and don’t ride on sidewalks.

THINK AHEAD Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians, and other people on bikes will do next. for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars. Look out for debris, potholes, and other road hazards.

RIDE READY Check that your tires are sufficiently inflated, brakes are working, chain runs smoothly, and quick release levers are closed. Carry tools and supplies that are appropriate for your ride. Wear a . Padres Pedal Event Information

• Padres Pedal the Cause is a ride, not a race! • must be worn at all times while riding. • Headphones, iPods and, radios are not permitted while riding. • Ride single file and as far to the right of the road as is safely possible except to pass. Stay in marked bike lanes where available.

• Communicate with your fellow cyclists using terms such as “on your left” when passing, and “car back” as well as pointing out pot holes and road debris (glass, gravel, etc.). • Stay to the right of the yellow lines at all times. • A detailed map of Refueling Station locations will be provided in the weeks leading up to the event. • The courses will have roving sag wagons and mechanics to help with technical difficulties, but please carry all necessary tools to change flat tires. • Courses will be marked with spray paint at all turns as well as signage throughout course. Each rider should carry turn by turn directions. • Traffic will not be closed, so be careful. What to Bring on Your Ride

• Stay right: Ride in the right portion of the rightmost lane in the direction you are traveling and leave at least four feet between your handlebars and parked cars or other hazards such as other users. You may move left when passing slower vehicles or preparing for a left turn. • Obey all traffic signs and signals: Avoid “following the leader” through traffic signs and signals; you are required to obey all traffic signs and signals, including stopping at red lights and stop signs. • Look & signal before you move: Always scan behind you before changing lanes or making turns. A continuous arm signal is required prior to a turn or lane change (unless arm is needed to control the bike) and while stopped waiting to turn. • Two at a time: Ride no more than two abreast and do not impede traffic. If a part of the road has been closed and dedicated to “bicycle travel only” you may ride more than two abreast. • Hands on the handlebars: Do not carry anything that prevents keeping one hand on the handlebars. • Pass with care: Do not pass at intersections.
