Historic Southern Indiana Interpretation Workshop, March 2-4, 1998 Historic Costuming Presented By Jill Harrison IMPRESSIONS Each of us makes an impression before ever saying a word. We size up visitors all the time, anticipating behavior from their age, clothing, and demeanor. What do they think of interpreters, disguised as we are in the threads of another time? While stressing the importance of historically accurate costuming (outfits) and accoutrements for first- person interpreters, there are many reasons compromises are made - perhaps a tight budget or lack of skilled construction personnel. Items such as shoes and eyeglasses are usually a sticking point when assembling a truly accurate outfit. It has been suggested that when visitors spot inaccurate details, interpreter credibility is downgraded and visitors launch into a frame of mind to find other inaccuracies. This may be true of visitors who are historical reenactors, buffs, or other interpreters. Most visitors, though, lack the heightened awareness to recognize the difference between authentic period detailing and the less-than-perfect substitutions. But everyone will notice a wristwatch, sunglasses, or tennis shoes. We have a responsibility to the public not to misrepresent the past; otherwise we are not preserving history but instead creating our own fiction and calling it the truth. Realistically, the appearance of the interpreter, our information base, our techniques, and our environment all affect the first-person experience. Historically accurate costuming perfection is laudable and reinforces academic credence. The minute details can be a springboard to important educational concepts; but the outfit is not the linchpin on which successful interpretation hangs. -

Fashion Terminology Today Describe your heritage collections with an eye on the future Ykje Wildenborg MoMu – Fashion Museum of the Province of Antwerp, Belgium Europeana Fashion, Modemuze Abstract: This article was written for ‘non-techy people’, or people with a basic knowledge of information technology, interested in preparing their fashion heritage metadata for publication online. Publishing fashion heritage on the web brings about the undisputed need for a shared vocabulary, especially when merged. This is not only a question of multilingualism. Between collections and even within collections different words have been used to describe, for example, the same types of objects, materials or techniques. In professional language: the data often is “unclean”. Linked Data is the name of a development in information technology that could prove useful for fashion collecting institutions. It means that the descriptions of collections, in a computer readable format, have a structure that is extremely easy for the device to read. As alien as it may sound, Linked Data practices are already used by the data departments of larger museums, companies and governmental institutions around the world. It eliminates the need for translation or actual changing of the content of databases. It only concerns ‘labeling’ of terms in databases with an identifier. With this in mind, MoMu, the fashion museum of Antwerp, Belgium, is carrying out a termi- nology project in Flanders and the Netherlands, in order to motivate institutions to accomplish the task of labeling their terms. This article concludes with some of the experiences of this adventure, but firstly elucidates the context of the situation. -
African Lace
Introduction Does changing an original material destroy its traditional context? If a material assumes new meaning or significance in a new context, is this inherently an appropriation of the object? What loss does this cause, and is it a positive change, a negative one, or neither? This lexicon revolves around African Lace. Through an analysis of this particular material, I broadly explain, craftsmanship, authenticity and reasons behind an object’s creation, including why and how it is made, from which materials, and how the object translates into a specific environment. Various kinds of objects are created in and relate to specific places and time periods. If situated in an environment in which it did not originate, the meaning of an object changes. In fact, the object is used from a new perspective. Although it is possible to reuse an object as a source of inspiration or research, it cannot be used as it was in its previous context. Thus, it is necessary to rethink the authenticity of an object when it is removed from its past context. History is important and can explain a materials origin, and it therefore warrants further attention. A lack of knowledge results in a loss of authenticity and originality of a historical material. In view of this, I develop this Lexicon to elaborate on the importance of this historical attention. It is interesting to consider how an object can influence a user in relation to emotional or even material value. The extent of this influence is uncertain, but it is a crucial aspect since any situation could diminish the value and the meaning of an object. -

Blackwork Journey Inspirations Madeira Embroidery Madeira is an island located in the Atlantic Ocean west and slightly south of Portugal. The capital of Madeira is Funchai on the main island’s south coast and it was to Funchai, the capital that I travelled to explore the history of Madeira embroidery and find some modern examples of this traditional form of whitework embroidery. The hand embroidery of Madeira is generally recognised as being the finest of its kind available in the world. Over the last 150 years, Madeira has collected expertise from the fast disappearing regional centres of hand embroidery across Europe and moulded these various styles into a distinctive form of handwork recognised throughout the world. The Development of Madeira Embroidery The story began in the 1860’s when a wine shipper’s daughter, Elizabeth Phelps turned the rural pastime of simple embroidery into a cottage industry using her skills to motivate, organise and sell the work of the embroiders to Victorian England. In the 1860’s it was estimated that there were 70,000 women embroiderers (bordadeiras) in Madeira working on linen, silk, organdy and cotton to create table linen, clothing, bedding and handkerchiefs. Today there are about 30 companies producing handmade embroideries employing around 4,500 embroiderers. During the 19th century the main exports were to England and Germany. In the 20th century Madeiran Embroidery was exported to many parts of the world. Italy, the United States, South America and Australia became important markets. France, Singapore, Holland, Brazil and other countries also contributed to the trading expansion of and reputation of Madeira Embroidery. -

Seals, 2008, 2009 LOWERING MAINTENANCE REDUCING MAINTENANCE IN THE PLANNING STAGES Unfortunately, maintenance of the landscape is often assumed or overlooked during the planning and design phase of a project 1) Keep the planting design simple. The more elaborate the plan and planting -- Numbers of plants, variety of plants, -- less than simple lines and shapes -- … the more maintenance is required. For instance, lawn areas need to be plotted so that mowing, edging and periodic maintenance can be accomplished easily. -- Avoid tight angles and sharp corners. -- wide angles, gentle, sweeping curves, and straight lines are much easier to mow. -- Make certain each plant in the plan serves a purpose. 2) Select the right plant for the right place We all know that there are “sun plants” for sunny spots and “shade plants” for shady spots. And we don’t plant “sun plants” in shade nor do we plant “shade plants” in sun. And some of us know that there are drought-tolerant plants that like dry soil and little water -- and there are moisture-loving plants that like their feet wet. And we don’t mix those up either. Such “mix ups” result in everything from the obvious: outright death of the plant involved to a subtly stressed plant that shows various symptoms of “disease” -- whether it’s an actual organism or a physiological condition. Nature's Mysteries
Summer 2012 • Volume 8 • No. 1 Nature’s Mysteries Reflections Reflecting ASU’s ranking as 21st in the world in the biological sciences, School of Life Sciences has forged impactful and far- reaching programs of research, education and outreach. We slip into the laboratory of ASU Professor Bert Jacobs to understand how AIDS-HIV vaccines are developed, then shift to Tanzania to see how science training can change treatment and prevention of disease in rural Africa. We drop in on SOLS alumni Rick Overson, Max Nickerson, Damien Salamone and Christian Lawrence. With Overson, we trek to the Panamanian tropical forest, along with biology doctoral student Clint Penick. Together with budding designers and architects with ASU’s Design School’s traveling studio and the Smithsonian, they develop new eyes for nature and bio- inspired innovation. We trace 40 years of hellbender studies in the Ozarks, which mark the career of Max Nickerson, whose path started with his establishment of the first reptile exhibit in The Phoenix Zoo; and cast our eyes toward Children’s Hospital in Boston and Christian Lawrence, whose research has changed how genetics studies can be done – with zebrafish. But don’t think that our ASU faculty and students aren’t change- makers in our own neighborhoods! Come to South Phoenix and visit the home of Associate Professor Juliet Stromberg and Research Faculty member Matthew Chew, who together have transformed a dilapidated rural sanitarium into a vibrant garden home that argues the concept of native versus invasive species. We also peek in on local hummingbirds, Chiricahua leopard frogs and jackrabbits, with new understanding about the role of behavior, disease and human activity in shaping the environment around us.
