Joey Burch and Mike Haynes braved and while racing against some of the best oval track enduro snowmobile racers in the country to give Beard Motor Sports Racing of Mt. Pleasant, MI their first ever pro-enduro victory.

During his career that call it a night due to concerns about driver visibility from water began in the 1970’s the elder Haynes was one of the fastest

In 1979 he qualified third at the Traverse City T.C. 250 eventually finishing third in the 250 mile race on board a ski-doo sno-pro with co-driver and fellow Mt. Pleasant resident Jim Stovak. Haynes also set on the pole at another race in ’79 on the same ski-doo in the Upper Penin- sula. During his career on the oval he scored many top finishes driving for various teams on the enduro circuit. In 1999 and 2000 the father and son duo teamed up racing ski-doo entries to 18th and 15th place finishes in a prestigious 500 Mile oval race. A top driver from the start, Mike Haynes has put in strong performances for various teams over the years on board Arctic Cat, ski-doo and Polaris entries. His first pro-enduro win came as a co-driver to James Hicks at the 2015 Caro 150 in Caro, Mich., driving a Polaris for Team 02 Blu of Bay Port, Mich., His second win could not have come in a better place! Racing in front of hometown fans on a locally sponsored team. It was a moment he’ll never forget. Joe (Joey) Burch III is the gifted son of Joe Burch II of Rose- bush, Mich., and a talented racer who made his mark on both snowmobile racing and those around him during his seven-year career. Like Alan Haynes, Joe Burch II drove to several top 10 finishes for various teams on the circuit. In 2002 he scored his only enduro victory at the Alpena Thunder Bay T.B. 250 driving an Arctic Cat for “Top Cat Racing” of Farwell, MI with co-driver Mike Barnaby. Sadly Joe Burch II passed away in 2006 at age 44 leaving Joey to continue the families racing legacy. Getting his first pro-enduro win as well as a victory Friday in the vintage class surrounded by friends, family and area fans is a day that will stay forever frozen in his memory. You can bet his Dad was looking down from the heavens with a big smile. “I’m 25 from Rosebush, Mich. I work as a CNC Machinist, but my life basically revolves around racing. As many people know, my dad raced snowmobiles seven years up until his passing due heart failure in 2006. He raced three wheelers and four wheelers long before sleds. I grew up in a racing environment; it’s all I’ve ever known. When I was younger I rode four wheel- ers, eventually I began racing cars at Mt. Pleasant Speedway before finding my way to racing dirt bikes during the summer and snowmobiles in the winter. If it has a motor I eventually want to race it. I’ve been racing the pro-enduro snowmobile circuit for five years. My best finish in an enduro prior to my win here was in 2014 at Kinross, Mich., where I won the semi-pro endure”, Burch said. Running a 2012 Polaris IQR 600R the team got off to a rough while it was a beautiful sight, wise fans headed for the start at the No Bull Triple Crown opener in Caro, Mich., and left indoor confines of the grandstand awaiting race action.

the race early. Burch still got some valuable track time when he came on board late in the race to help lead defending Caro win- ners Team 02 Blu to an eighth place finish with Jay Mittlestaedt after team co-driver Jake Beres was injured in a spill. “In Caro I started the race, our sled was running great and we were moving forward. Before we even made it 50 laps I mis- judged how quickly Troy Dewald of Cadarette Racing was slow- ing down on his Arctic Cat coming into turn three. My left front ski got into his track and flipped the sled. The lower ball joint on the steering post broke and put us out of the race. The Mt. Pleasant weekend started out great! I qualified the best I’ve ever qualified, missing the pole by .0003 seconds. On Friday I won the vintage race on a Yamaha owned by long time friend Rick Bunker. Rick and I built it from a scrap yard sled to a race ready machine in a week. One of our crewmembers Nate Bowerman took second. Due to the weather the Pro Shootout was rescheduled to the morning before the pro-enduro. We didn’t do so well in that race but our focus was on preserving our machine for the enduro. At some point in the beginning of the pro-enduro I was on the sled and leading the race when I hit a large hole coming out of turn four that caused the track to derail. We ended up losing our position for a while. When all the leaders went in for Mike Haynes and Joey Burch were all smiles after claiming a pit stop we decided to stay out and stretch the fuel as much Beard Motorsports first ever pro-enduro victory. as possible, Team 02 Blu also decided to stay out as well, they

THE WINNING EDGE MAGAZINE © 2016 Reproduction Prohibited YOUR TOTAL MOTORSPORTS PUBLICATIONS 15 had about as much fuel as we had. That move put us back into the lead. Mark Beard later came on the radio and told me I would need gas in about 10 laps, we were hoping for another caution but it didn’t seem to be coming. After running that 10 laps I saw Team 02 Blu on the side of the track where they had ran out of fuel. We were getting nervous but still hoping for a caution. We waited as long as we could before we ended up having to pit under green for fuel, skis, and driver change. I don’t know how we didn’t run out of gas. Honestly the whole race was so unusual with the weather, we really took some risks that we don’t normally take. We just stepped out of our comfort zone and fortunately it paid off. After the track derailed it was constantly in the back of my mind that it could happen again, or the track could come apart. That thought did slow down my pace a bit when I realized there was still so much racing left and conditions were only going to get messier and more difficult as it progressed. It can be a chal- lenge sometimes to pace myself when I’d like to push myself, but you always have to keep preservation of the sled and safety in mind. Riding in that slush was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before, it was an almost constant battle to keep the sled straight. Getting sprayed by the other sleds was like standing under a waterfall, there was no way to stay dry out there. The sled performed and handled surprisingly well considering the conditions. The weather was really crazy, however, the No Bull Triple Crown crew really did a good job pulling everything together for A tow sled makes a wake as it heads through a soaked pit a great race. I think it made for that much more of a show for row after a freak winter rainstorm. the fans. I feel the officials made the right choice when they called it early. By then so many teams had been forced to pull out with ruined equipment, I don’t think the rest of us were too Joey Burch got a feel for vintage racing Friday thanks to far off. Little did he know he would be holding his If there was any race to win, our hometown was that race. I First Pro-Enduro checkered the next day. think our whole team felt how special that was. It was the great- est moment in my racing career so far. Mike Higgins raced with my dad, he was the reason he got into this sport if it wasn’t for him I probably wouldn’t be racing snowmobiles. To win that race (M.P.) in Mike’s No Bull racing circuit made it even more special. Dad also raced with Chad Bauer and Mike Otto with Tommie Bauer Racing, they were in the trailer next to ours cheering us on. My teammate and driv- ing partner Michael Haynes also raced with my dad. It’s just truly an amazing feeling to win my first pro enduro race here. I really believe somehow someway my dad helped us out that day and put the odds in our favor. Every time I’m on a sled it is my memorial to him, I plan to keep racing and win- ning in his honor”, Burch said. Beard Motorsports Racing is sponsored by; TTS Logistics, Beard Oil, Fiber Link, LRM Race Engines, Stud Boy, HMK, Moto Tassinari, AMS Bjerke Corp, VP Racing Fuels, and Recker Motor Sports. The bright #34 Polaris of Kovar Racing from Newberry, Mich., is always in the thick of the hunt thanks to drivers Billy Travis and Dan Maki, however they’re still waiting to take their first victory lap following a pro-enduro win. At the opener in Caro they were right in contention until mechanical issues put an end to their day, they finished 13th. Dealing with the most unusual challenging conditions in the history of enduro racing the Kovar crew kept their drivers on the track making every lap count before finishing just shy of the checkered to take an impressive second place. Taking their first ever pro-enduro victory at the Caro 500 lap pro-enduro winners Faust Racing of Rubicon, Wisc. put them- selves in a great position to take the 2016 No Bull Triple Crown Championship with their third place finish, one lap down on a Polaris. Polaris and Yamaha cross country and enduro great Corey Davidson teamed up with Eric Baussen to score a fourth place on their Polaris just one lap down. Following a strong finish at the opener in Caro where they took fourth on their Felzke Farm’s Polaris, James Heiler and Andrew Terrill overcame the bumps and the slush to take fifth

MIRA Pro-Enduro Champions, 2015 Champions and No Bull Triple Crown runners-up, Team O2 Blu were set up for the long haul, however, due to the early call of the race they had to settle for 12th after running 244 laps with drivers Cardell Potter, Jay Mittelstaedt and Jake Beres. On a high note Jake Beres led the team to victory in the 50 lap Semi-Pro Enduro. Caro 500 runners-up Cadarette Collision racing of Alpena, Mich., kept hopes alive for a second straight No Bull Triple Crown title. Racing one of the few Arctic Cats on the circuit the team ran strong early on before finishing out the day in 17th with drivers Troy Dewald, Austin Leeck and Ryan Spencer at the controls. “The MP race wasn’t the most ideal conditions for ice oval enduro racing but promoter Mike Higgins did pulled off one hell of a show for what mother-nature had thrown in his lap. The Shootout went well for us by starting from the back of the pack. Troy Dewald was able to work his way close to the front, which was good because we needed a strong finish to put us in con- tention for the point’s championship. I was the third driver behind Troy and Ryan because I was questionable if I was going to race because I was healing from my accident a few weeks earlier. When I got on the sled, we were having some motor issues. When it ran, it ran awesome. In my opinion, the team nailed the set up on the sled. We just didn’t have the best of luck. As far as racing in the warm weather, I thought it was a blast. It was way different because everyone seemed to be unsure on how to dress for it. You just had to have the mindset that you’re going to get wet. For the most part visibility wasn’t too bad, un- less the water got under your shield. Honestly, I thought the No Bull crew made the right decision to call the race early. I recall that in the middle of turns 1 and 2, Kyle Roe is blasted by wind and rain after winning Friday Night under the lights. Racing was called due to concerns The Woody’s scoring trailer was hung high going into turn about visibility. one giving fans and teams a good view the leader board.

D & L Racing, #29 with drivers Larry Young Jr. and Jake Gerow led their Polaris to a ninth place finish.

Billy Travis and Dan Maki of Kovar Racing, #34 came 03.068 short of taking their first ever No Bull Triple Crown victory. They finished out in second place.

When a front moved in late Friday afternoon bringing gale force wind everything from tents to banners were flying. there was actually a huge chunk of ice missing from the . As the race went on, there was so much standing water on the track it was hard to tell what was dirt and what was ice”, Austin Leeck said. While the weather and track condition for this years race were challenging for todays younger drivers overall it was really just a walk in the park. Expect to see Grant back in the saddle in the future racing vintage classes at vari- ous tracks including Eagle River . “Having never been “Sleddin’ at the Jack” I didn’t know what to expect but I walked away thinking what a good show it was. There were a lot of good ole sleds and people with a lot of knowl- edge about the old equipment. The entire Countryside Racing Team had a great time looking at the old sleds and talking to some real nice people. You’d have to say them were “mint times in Farwell”. I wish I had kept a lot of the old sleds we raced over the years. Being on a limited budget, our old sleds always had to be sold so we could get the new ones. Besides, I wouldn’t have a big enough shed to store them. I did buy back our 2008 Polaris IQR that my son Cameron and I won his first ever enduro race on in 2011. One sled I wish I could find is our 1978 Yamaha SSR. It belonged to my cousins Roger & Larry Vermeersch, it was the first sled I raced professionally with my cousin Kim Ski-doo collector and top vintage racer Larry Decker of Dewitt, MI Gainforth, the father of current enduro driver Keith chats with a fellow doo lover about an old vintage race sled. It was nice to hear something so positive after so many years of effort”, Vermeersch said. The 2016 “Sleddin’ at the Jack Vintage Snow- mobile Swap and Show featured the biggest dis- play of show sleds since 2013.
