Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Sleepy bull toad plays autoharp Looking back, I think it was the autoharp that hooked me - the shimmer at the beginning of Younger Girl sounded familiar. A junior school teacher, circa 1960, had had one - a real curiosity: black, rectangular, about 12 inches by 15 with a corner cut off, soundbox about one inch thick, a string for each note over a range of maybe two octaves, stopped by felt pads under sprung wooden bars, each one labelled with a chord name. But where Miss Clifton had played it mechanically, unidirectionally, metal plectrum, flat on the desk, strictly on the beat, Sebastian strummed it flexible-wristed, standing up - an evocative, magical sound. And there was something else too. The transformation mirrored how I first taught myself guitar. Before my hands were big enough to reach round the neck, I started out with the soundbox across my knee, making chord shapes with my left hand fingers straight down onto the fretboard, right hand at too awkward an angle to stroke the strings properly. Then my hands grew and I could turn it over and strum back and forth - real progress as I became a teenager! With a little musical knowledge from earlier piano lessons, aided by Bert Weedon's Play in a Day and a book of simple old stuff called Folk Sing, I could understand the chord structures and work out the finger shapes. But I wanted to play pop music - yes, POP, that's what we called it, the generic term that meant it wasn't classical. Scarce pocket money got diverted over from records to sheet music for favourite songs, and I started to match what my ears were hearing with the chords I was learning.

HUMANIORA VOLUME 30 Number 1 February 2018 Page 27–38 “Are My Songs Literature?”1: A Postmodern Appraisal of Bob Dylan’s American Popular Music Culture Marwa Essam Eldin Fahmi MISR University for Science & Technology, Egypt E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The current study is a postmodern appraisal of Bob Dylan’s artistic career and vocal gestures to examine the way melody in popular music works in relation to speech and singing, the grand and the ordinary. It historicizes Bob Dylan’s protest music of the 1960s within the paradigm of folk music culture. Dylan’s music is full of riffs, blues sequences, and pentatonic melodies—all heavily part and parcel of blues, folk, gospel, and country music. It is the music that dwells on the pleasures of repetition, of circularity, and of the recurring familiar tune integrated within Dylanesque poetics of rhyme delivered with his idiosyncratic, deep and intense range of voices. Dylan is the official son of the legacies of social, communal, and ritual music-making that mirrors contemporary pop and rock back to folk and blues, street-sung broadsides and work songs, the melodies of medieval troubadours, and the blessed rhythms of Christianity and Judaism. The study is an attempt to illustrate how musicology and ethnomusicology in particular can contribute to understanding Dylan as a ‘performing artist’ within the postmodern paradigm. Thus, the study seeks to establish Dylan as a phenomenal, prolific postmodernist artist, as well as an anarchist. The power and originality of Dylan’s music constitute a prima facie case that his performances should be considered postmodernist art.

This may or may not be the key of the original recording. It may or may not be a key that matches the vocal ranges of your jamming buddies. Therefore, I recommend that you use capos liberally to adjust the key if you find a song really high or low. Of course, if your jam includes non-capo-ed instruments (like bass, piano, and wind instruments), then the folks playing those instruments will have a slightly harder time. Layout: The songs are in alphabetical order by title, and, whenever possible, each song fits onto a single page. If a song spans two pages, then it has been placed (sometimes slightly out of alphabetical order) so that you can see both pages without physically having to turn the page. Each chord should appear right above the syllable with which it coincides. When a chord progression repeats (for example, for several verses), it only appears once, unless the chords or lyrics are so complicated that referring back to an earlier part of the song would be impractical.
