University of Central Florida, 2000 M.A. Rollins College, 2002 A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Texts and Technology in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Summer Term 2018 Major Professor: Stephanie Vie © 2018 Jennifer Roth Miller ii ABSTRACT Digital Citizenship Tools for Cause-Based Campaigns: A Broadened Spectrum of Social Media Engagement and Participation-Scale Methodology develops and applies two new tools for understanding, measuring, and recursively adjusting small to medium-size social media- based philanthropic campaigns to better foster participation and engagement—in other words, democratic digital citizenship. First, a theoretical model is offered broadening current binary conceptions of success and failure or impact of campaigns, situating specific participant actions in social media on a spectrum. Then, from that model, a new methodology is provided to measure participation and engagement generated by campaign posts. Recommendations are also offered for recursively adjusting campaign posts to better foster democratic digital citizenship. These tools were developed from data generated by #TheFaceOffChallenge, a research project representative of a typical small to medium-size cause-based campaign. #TheFaceOffChallenge also serves as a sample for analysis illustrating how to use these tools. While explicating these tools, this dissertation explores a broad range of topics related to better understanding democratic digital citizenship: online philanthropy, awareness, and digital activism; viral and memetic transmission; tensions between consumption and creation of ideas, content, and knowledge; public(s), counterpublics, and counter-efforts; literacies and access for engagement and participation in algorithmic environments; and visual communication and semiotics. iii This dissertation is first and foremost dedicated to digital citizens in general and all of the issues they care about.     Running head: ALTRUISITC MOTIVATION ON MOTOR SKILLS PRODUCTIVITY “Pieces of the Puzzle”: The Effect of Altruistic Motivation on Motor Skills Productivity Emma Skiba Psychology Major Dr. Patrick Smith Thesis for Completion of the Honors Program At Florida Southern College April 25, 2019 ALTRUSITIC MOTIVATION ON MOTOR SKILLS PRODUCTIVITY 2 Abstract Altruistic motivation is the driving force behind charities, volunteerism, and random acts of kindness; it is the motivation to give a resource (eg., time, money) without the anticipation of personal gain. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively show the effect of awareness and altruistic motivation on behavior through assigning philanthropic significance to a mundane task. The participants made bracelets that were presented as either increasing awareness for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or having no external purpose. In the altruistic motivation condition, the task was given a purpose by highlighting its goal to raise funds for a charity supporting autism awareness. Participants in the altruistic motivation condition made a slightly greater number of bracelets than those in the control condition. Additionally, a survey measured the participants’ compassion toward humanity. The participants with high levels of compassion in the altruism condition completed the greatest number of bracelets. Participants in the altruistic motivation condition best performed the task of making bracelets, showing the impact of altruism on a controlled activity. This research shows that inspiring empathy and giving an external purpose to a task can increase task performance.
