History of Football in Ethiopia Pdf History of football in ethiopia pdf Continue Ethiopia Menu General Summary Current League Tables Historic League Historic VonFootball is the most popular sport in Ethiopia. Although Ethiopia is not one of Africa's leading football countries, it has created several outstanding teams at both club and international level, as well as talented individual players. The early yearsFutball in Ethiopia came under the control of the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) when the organization was founded in 1943. EFF, affiliated with FIFA in 1953 and the Confederation of African Football in 1957. The Football League was in existence before the formation of the EFF with regional leagues contested during the 1938/39 and 1939/40 seasons in the provinces of Eritrea, Harar, Amhara, Shoah and Oromia - Cidamo under the Italian occupation. The first recognized version of the Ethiopian Premier League was challenged in 1944, when five teams representing different communities of Addis Ababa competed for the title won by the British Military Mission-BMME. The Ethiopian Cup was added the following year and has been regularly contested since then (albeit with some gaps, especially in the 1960s). Modern Football League has been an annual competition since 1948 with St George FC becoming the country's leading club with 24 titles. Ethiopia was suspended by FIFA in 2008 after the Federal Parliament assembly dismissed Esmebir Woldegirgis as EFF president and replaced him with his candidate Ahmed Yasin. As a result, FIFA, speaking out against state interference in football, suspended the country in July 2008. The suspension was lifted in July 2009 following the election of new EFF leaders. InternationalThe Ethiopia national football team made its first appearance in 1947 and has since enjoyed both highs and lows. As one of the few independent African states immediately after the Second World War, Ethiopia was an important team in the development of international football on the continent. The Africa Cup of NationsThiopia was one of the pioneers of the African Cup of Nations and was one of three teams that participated in the first tournament in 1957, finishing second in Egypt. They also attended the 1959 tournament As the hosts of the 1962 tournament and led by goalkeeper Mengistu Worku, Ethiopia defeated Tunisia and the United Arab Republic (Egypt) to be crowned African champions for the only time in its history. They held the tournament again in 1968 and 1976, but by then the decline was established and their last appearance in the finals of the tournament came in 1982.World CupEthiopia never qualified for the FIFA World Cup.The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Ethiopia is also members of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) and take part in its competition. For the first time they won the CECAFA Cup in and repeated the same triumph in 2001 and 2004 before adding a fourth title in Rwanda in 2005.Other teams In 2005 the under-20 team won its only CECAFA U-20 Championship.Club footballNo Ethiopian club side has never won the CAF Champions League or any other international club competition. The best performances were the semi-final places achieved by the Cotton Factory Club in 1964 and St. George in 1967.Ethiopia's national football team Ethiopia, nicknamed Valia Antelope after the goat Of Valia, represents Ethiopia in association football and heads the Ethiopian Football Federation, the governing body of football in Ethiopia.Sources: Ethiopian Federation of Sports and Culture and Wikipedia. These persons were addressed by name, not inheritance. Ethiopia's national football team, nicknamed Valias, after the goat of Valia, represents Ethiopia in men's international football and is controlled by the Ethiopian Football Federation, Ethiopia's governing body. The team has represented Ethiopia in regional, continental and international competitions since its founding in 1943. Valias play his home games at Addis Ababa Stadium in the capital Addis Ababa. They currently rank 150th in the world according to the FIFA World Rankings and 44th in the CAF rankings. Ethiopia was one of three teams (along with Egypt and Sudan) to participate in the first African Cup of Nations in 1957. He won the competition in 1962, while he was also the host. However, success has been elusive since the late 1960s. Under previous coach Sevnet Bishow, the team qualified for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations after a 31-year absence. Ethiopia's early history has a long football tradition and was one of the pioneers of international competition in Africa, playing its first international match in 1947, beating French Somaliland 5-0. EFF joined FIFA in 1952 and co-founded the Confederation of African Football in 1957. The team took part in the first African Cup of Nations in 1957, where it finished second. In 1959, Ethiopia entered the 1962 World Cup qualifier for the first time and faced Israel after the visit. Teh Lost both games; and with a combined score of 2:4 was knocked out of the competition. The team won the African tournament on home soil in 1962. Nine countries, including the reigning champions of the United Arab Republic, took part in the competition, which means that a qualifying tournament was required for the first time. As in previous tournaments, only four teams entered the final. The United Arab Republic, as holders, and Ethiopia as hosts, qualified automatically, which means that each of them had to play only one game to reach the final. Ethiopia won the tournament for the first time after extra time in the final against the United Arab Republic. Mengistu Waokeu and Badawi Abdel Fattah were joint top scorers, both with three goals each, but the award itself was awarded to Worku because his team won the title. It was the greatest feat ever achieved by the Ethiopian national team, and the only African Cup of Nations title it has ever won. Luciano Vassalu was the team captain and Iknekachev Tessema was the coach. In 1963, in the Africa Cup of Nations, they finished fourth, losing third place to the Battle of the United Arab Republic. The 1965 edition was an even bigger disappointment for Ethiopia, as the national team was eliminated in the group stage by Tunisia and Senegal, finishing at the bottom of the group, and scored only one goal.

  • The Surveillance of Ethiopian Women Athletes for Capital
Tracking Work from the Wrist: The Surveillance of Ethiopian Women Athletes for Capital Hannah Borenstein Duke University [email protected] Abstract This essay explores the proliferating uses of GPS watches among women athletes in Ethiopia. Aspiring and successful long-distance runners have been using GPS watches in increasing numbers over the past several years, rendering their training trackable for themselves, partners, coaches, sponsors, and agents located in the Global North. This essay explores how the transnational dimensions of the athletics industry renders their training data profitable to systems of capitalist accumulation while exploring how athletes put the emerging technologies to work to aid in their pursuit of succeeding in the sport and work of running. New Metrics In 2013, when I was first living with young sub-elite athletes at a training camp in Ethiopia, nearly all runners wore basic digital watches. Casio was the leading brand, but any watch that had a time setting, a few alarms, and, crucially, the start-stop function, was a critical instrument for long-distance running aspirants. Watches that could record splits—different intervals of training—were coveted, but by no means the norm. Thus, the metric that everyone used to discuss training was time. Recovery runs were spoken about in terms of hours run: “one- Borenstein, Hannah. 2021. “Tracking Work from the Wrist: Surveillance of Ethiopian Women Athletes for Capital.” Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience 7 (1): 1–20. http://www.catalystjournal.org | ISSN: 2380-3312 © Hannah Borenstein, 2021 | Licensed to the Catalyst Project under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives license Special Section: Self-Tracking, Embodied Differences, and the Politics and Ethics of Health twenty.” Speed sessions were broken down into minutes: “we did three minutes by eight with sixty seconds rest.” Athletes knew that this would need to be converted to kilometers for their performances, but conversations about training were discussed in terms of time.

  • Kanhaiya Kumar Singh a PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS STUDY of ETHIOPIAN FOOTBALL DURING 2008-2018 Dr. Kanhaiya Kumar Singh, Assistant
International Journal of Physical Education, Health and Social Science (IJPEHSS) ISSN: 2278 – 716X www.ijpehss.org Vol. 7, Issue 1, (2018) Peer Reviewed, Indexed and UGC Approved Journal (48531) Impact Factor 5.02 A PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS STUDY OF ETHIOPIAN FOOTBALL DURING 2008-2018 Dr. Kanhaiya Kumar Singh, Assistant Professor Sports Academy, Bahirdar University, Ethiopia ABSTRACT The purpose of the study was to analyse the overall journey of Ethiopian National football at international level as well domestic level in last decade. In order to analyse the fact observation method has been used to collect data. Finding of the study reflects that Ethiopian national football is losing its position and credibility continuously in the last decade. It might be happened due to some socio-political issue the Ethiopian football federation, moreover for FIFA2014 Ethiopian national football team scored total 12 goals and conceded 21 goals and reached up to first qualifying round then Nigeria went to FIFA World Cup 2014. Further for FIFA 2018 (Russia), Ethiopian National Team reached up to second qualifying round and eliminated by COGO. Ethiopian Domestic football leagues are Premier League, Higher League and National League conducted every year, it is important to note that 70% winning position in Premier League went to one team i.e., Saint Gorge FC and rest 30% goes to other 15 playing teams. It clearly shows the lack of competitive balance in the most famous domestic league of a country. At the continent level in Champions League Country best domestic team scored 18th Rank out of 59 teams. In Super League (Winner of Champions League v/s Winners of Confederation Cup) Ethiopian football team has not seen anywhere.

  • Are the Black Lions of Ethiopia Y to Maul Zambia?
The Horn Times Sport, 20 January 2013 Match build up; are the black lions of Ethiopia ready to maul Zambia? (By Getahune Bekele, Nelspruit - South Africa.) Despite the annoying mannerism of Ethiopian Football Association boss and top TPLF cadre Sahilu Gebremariam who prevented the players from meeting their passionate fans at the Oliver Tambo air port in Johannesburg on Friday afternoon, the colorful country men and women are streaming to the city of Nelspruit for Monday’s crunch battle against Zambia. Will classy goal poacher Saladin said, leader of the pride Degu Debebe, power house Yared Zenabu and the inspirational Adane Girma catapult Ethiopia, the 1957 runners up and the 1962 winners to glory? Although it is unfair to compare the current crop of players to the 1962 intrepid soldiers of the lion of Judah, they do have what it takes to bring back the glory days of yester year soccer. We are told that the free kick specialist of the black lions who can bend it like David Beckham is defender Abebaw Butako with Saladin deputizing to take those around the 18 yard area. Fuad Ibrahim of Minnesota stars in the US is aiming high to share the goal scoring responsibility with Saladin. Dangerous crosses expected to come from the man known for his electrifying pace, Yusuf Saleh of Syrianska club in Sweden. Our goal keeper, the proven shot stopper Sisaye Bancha will be well protected by the likes of Biadgelegn Elias, Aynalem Hailu, Asrat Megersa, Alula Girma and co while the acrobatic coffee goal minder Jemal Tassew waits on the wings to grab his chance if Bancha fails to stay switched on for the crucial 90 minutes against the Zambians.

  • Beautiful Soccer by the Beautiful Ethiopians!
The Horn Times Sport, 21 January 2013 Beautiful soccer by the most beautiful Ethiopians! (By Getahune Bekele, at Mbombela stadium - South Africa) ETHIOPIA 1-1 Zambia. “Who said Africa cannot play like Barcelona? This Ethiopian team is Africa’s Barcelona.” Sunday Olisey, Nigerian foot ball legend. “Today Ethiopians have showed the world that African foot ball is on the rise” Mark Fish, South African foot ball legend. “Today I witnessed minnows turning giant killers” President of Nigerian football association. Today I realize why an Irish Historian Deborah Murphy once described my beloved Ethiopia as the land of beautiful women and handsome men. Not just the sheer artistry on the field of play that mesmerized Africa and the world, it was the beauty of the girls and the glamour that followed Ethiopians wherever they go that bewilderd humanity on this historic day. Am as astounded as everybody else by the tactical and technical discipline of the black lions that attacked the mighty Zambians like angry swarm of bees. The goal scored today by the nifty Adane Girma on the 64 th minute is our first goal at African cup of nations since March 1976. And it is done in the most dramatic way. Africa’s lowest ranking team at this tournament, Ethiopia, butchering the defending champions, Zambia. Furthermore, the entire soccer analysts at super sport channel 4 were unanimous when they select the Ethiopia vs. Zambia game as the best since the 29 th edition began on Friday. The game started very badly for the black lions when on the 16 th minute star striker Saladine Said missed a golden chance to put Ethiopia ahead.
