The representatives-on-mission with the Army of the North, reporting back to Paris after the conquest of the Dutch Republic in January 1795.1 Abstract Just over one decade ago, Pierre Branda published a study of Napoleonic public finance. The study marks a turning point in the historiography of Napoleonic war financing because, through relying on well-researched quantitative data, Branda lays to rest the long-held myth that Napoleon ‘made war pay for war’. However, the Franco-centric conceptualization of Napoleonic resource extraction and the tempo- ral delineation have resulted in a prism that omits certain sources of revenue. This omission has a bearing on Branda’s overall assessment of Napoleonic war financing. Through exploring French resource extraction in the Netherlands through forcing the Dutch to pay for the maintenance of a French contingent, this article builds on Branda’s work to shed a new light on the success of Napoleonic resource extraction and war financing.

An analysis is made of Catholic opinion before, during, and after the coup to determine its import ance to the success of authoritarianism. • The Restored Bourbon Monarchy in France 1814-1830
THE RESTORED BOURBON MONARCHY IN FRANCE 1814-1830. After the defeat of Napoleon and his 1st exile to the land of Elba (1814), the Vienna Congress powers restored the Bourbon monarchy in France under Louis Stanislus Xavier de France who took the title Louis XVIII. This was in accordance to the principle of legitimacy by which rightful rulers were to be restored to their legitimate thrones. Louis XVIII was 60 years and was the eldest brother of King Louis XVI who was executed in Jan 1793. Louis XVIII was both intellectually and by character suitable to be a king. He had a lot of common sense and had learnt a lot from the French revolution and Napoleonic era .He was aware of the faults of his brother that caused his death .He had suffered enough in exile and would never wish to go back. He therefore stood for a policy of compromise and reconciliation between the new and old order in France. However on 1st march 1815, Napoleon escaped from Elba and landed in Paris with 1100 men. He received overwhelming ovation and support from the peasants. The soldiers sent to engage him fraternized when he dimply moved forward, opened his coat and asked, "Which of you will fire against his emperor"? This event forced Louis XVIII to flee to exile once again and Napoleon ruled for 100 more days the allies, who had suffered in the hands of Napoleon, reorganized themselves and defeated Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815. Louis XVIII returned from exile with a charter to rule as a constitutional king.

  • Reading Marx Through the Eighteenth Brumaire
Imagery/Writing, Imagination/Politics: Reading Marx through the Eighteenth Brumaire Terrell Carver University of Bristol Published in Marx's Eighteenth Brumaire: (Post)Modern Interpretations, ed. Mark Cowling and James Martin (London, 2002). Readers have choices, and there are things no person or group may do to them (without violating their choices).[1] Around Marx there is a highly developed politics of reading. Readers do not read just as they please in circumstances they choose for themselves; rather they read in present circumstances, given and inherited. There are nightmares weighing on their brains, and disciplinary practices violating their choices. Shifting all the dead generations is really very hard work.[2] Why would anyone want to? I wouldn't claim that a new, anti-traditional or 'against the grain' reading of Marx will revolutionize him. Nor would I claim that interpreting him will change the world. However, his interventions in politics were based mostly on writing (rather than other forms of so-called direct action), and he clearly thought that readers would change things, or at least try to. We know very little in general, or even specific terms most of the time, about what he thought his relation to his readership was, or should be. What we know for dead and absolute certain is that he wrote a lot; since the Fall of the Wall, MEGA2 has been riven with strategies, economic and academic, for coping with the Nachlaß, currently planned for about 120 double volumes. There are prefaces and letters that get us close to what Marx thought about his writing and his readership, but even they don't really explain who was supposed to do what with whom in relation to him, having read him.

  • Thesis Examines the Painter’S Life and Major Works Under Each Regime to Discover Why He Achieved Success in Such Variegated Environments
ABSTRACT “L’Artiste Créateur, L’Homme Aimable”: A Survey of the Artistic and Commercial Success of Jean-Baptiste Isabey Samantha Evans Director: Madame Marie Level Jean-Baptiste Isabey was one of the most successful French artists of the nineteenth century, yet his name is unfamiliar today. His popularity survived eight different regimes, from Louis XVI to Napoléon III. Known as the “portraitiste de l’Europe”, Isabey painted every major historical personality from Marie-Antoinette to Hortense de Beauharnais. In the past few years, scholars have been intrigued by this man who has disappeared from the pages of history. This thesis examines the painter’s life and major works under each regime to discover why he achieved success in such variegated environments. This thesis argues that Isabey’s popularity was due to both his personal and artistic merit. His ability to win patronage, artistic versatility, and family support allowed him to maintain a successful career throughout his lifetime. Prof., School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS), Baridhara, Dhaka, Bangladesh Abstract Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), also known as Napoleon I, was a French military leader and emperor who conquered much of Europe in the early 19th century. Born on the island of Corsica, Napoleon rapidly rose through the ranks of the military during the French Revolution (1789-1799). After seizing political power in France in a 1799 coup d’état, he crowned himself emperor in 1804. Shrewd, ambitious and a skilled military strategist, Napoleon successfully waged war against various coalitions of European nations and expanded his empire. However, after a disastrous French invasion of Russia in 1812, Napoleon abdicated the throne two years later and was exiled to the island of Elba. In 1815, he briefly returned to power in his Hundred Days campaign. After a crushing defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, he abdicated once again and was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died at 51.Napoleon was responsible for spreading the values of the French Revolution to other countries, especially in legal reform and the abolition of serfdom. After the fall of Napoleon, not only was the Napoleonic Code retained by conquered countries including the Netherlands, Belgium, parts of Italy and Germany, but has been used as the basis of certain parts of law outside Europe including the Dominican Republic, the US state of Louisiana and the Canadian province of Quebec.

ONLINE EDITION .................................... December 2003 NEW YORK LABOR NEWS P.O. BOX 218 MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA 94042-0218 http://www.slp.org/nyln.htm ILLUSTRATIONS Louis Bonaparte was mercilessly satirized in cartoons and caricatures until the coup. The iron censorship he imposed thereafter put a temporary halt to the lampooning in France. However, the European cartoonists outside France took up where their French colleagues had been compelled to leave off. The greatest pen and pencil artists of France had meanwhile succeeded in recording the corruption and scoundrelism of the little man who, through the magic of the name Napoleon, had managed for a time to follow in his uncle’s footsteps. These great artists, true social satirists of the highest order, included such outstanding men as Honore Daumier (born 1808), Andre Gill (Gosset de Guines, born 1840), Gavarni (Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier, born 1804), Grandville, Bertall, Faustin and many others. Daumier was the greatest of these—an immortal among artists and social satirists.

  • Dictatorship in History and Theory: Bonapartism, Caesarism, And
CY332/Baehr&Richter-FM 0 521 825636 October 15, 2003 8:21 Dictatorship in History and Theory bonapartism, caesarism, and totalitarianism This book is unusual in bringing together the work of historians and political theo- rists under one cover to consider the subject of nineteenth- and twentieth-century dictatorships. A distinguished group of authors examine the complex relationship among nineteenth-century democracy, nationalism, and authoritarianism, paying special attention to the careers of Napoleon I and III and of Bismarck. An important contribution of the book is consideration not only of the momentous episodes of coup d’etat,´ revolution, and imperial foundation that the Napoleonic era heralded, but also the contested political language with which these events were described and assessed. Political thinkers were faced with a battery of new terms – “Bonapartism,” “Caesarism,” and “Imperialism” among them – with which to make sense of their era. In addition to documenting the political history of a revolutionary age, the book examines a series of thinkers – Tocqueville, Marx, Max Weber, Antonio Gramsci, Carl Schmitt, and Hannah Arendt – who articulated and helped to reshape our sense of the political.
