8 25 8 TRULL, ANGERSLEIGH AND STAPLEHAY LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

We continue to stay in touch with our members by email and Facebook. Recent articles have included the following:

The Battle of Torrington

(provided by Graham and Cherry Grant), which took place 375 years ago.

The Spittel House of Taunton/The Hospital of Taunton

In response to a question raised in this article provided by Robin Leamon, Graham Grant suggests this may relate to the Almshouses on the junction of Leycroft Road and Hamilton Road. He indicates that an extract from a publication “A History of the County of Somerset Volume 2” strongly suggests a link between Saint Margaret’s Almshouses and the Spytelhouse.

Trull Cottagers and Gardeners Flower Show (provided by Robin Leamon)

Graham Grant followed this up with some details gleaned from research for the parish archive’s book ‘We Will Remember Them’, which related to a number of the people mentioned in Robin’s article. From a personal point of view, my husband and I were interested to see reference to my husband’s great-great grandfather, who was a local Nurseryman on Wilton and a judge at the event.

More recently, Don Archer introduced some historical notes shared by a previous occupant relating to Kings Gatchell, a property currently for sale within Trull (at time of writing), which was probably originally a medieval hall house.

The History Society is very much looking forward to getting back to meetings in person. Our meetings are held at Trull Church Community Centre.

12 21 12 HISTORY OF GALMINGTON Nick Chipchase

This image is thought to be the earliest photograph of Galmington. It was taken by Edward Jeboult and was one of many he used in his unpublished work featuring Taunton and his family in the 1860s later used by Robin Bush in his book Jeboult’s Taunton ( 1983 ). I have re-edited this small print original and coloured it. I believe the photograph was taken from Belmont which would have had an uninterrupted view of Galmington hamlet. If that were the case the building in the foreground would be Hoveland Farm. Long demolished its position would roughly have been at the road junction by the chip shop. Edward Jeboult came from a Taunton trading family and ran the family outfitters shop for a while in the 1850s. Whilst raising a young family and trading as an ironmonger he took many photographs in the Taunton area during the 1860s. He took several photographs in the Belmont area and it seems likely that he knew the house owner James E. Marshall. Marshall had the walls built along Trull Road in the early 1860s. Marshall also rebuilt Mount Nebo. HISTORY of GALMINGTON Of interest is the landscape. Somerset in the 1860s comprised of many small fields dominated by tall elm trees. Dutch Elm Disease appeared in the UK in the 1920s and killed nearly a third of the trees. The 1960s saw the return of a more aggressive form of the disease and by 1980 nearly all the mature UK elms were gone. Clearance of dead elms resulted in the disappearance of many ancient hedgerows. Spend time in the garden

Even if you don’t have a very big garden, spending time outdoors can be beneficial. Now that the pandemic-related restrictions are being eased, seeing people outside can be a great way to elevate your mood.

Gardening can also promote positive feelings as you nurture new life through whatever you plant. It’s a great way to grow a bit of extra food too, such as potatoes and strawberries. These do well in containers, so you don’t even need much space – which is great news if you live in an apartment and only have a balcony or window ledge.

For ideas of some of the best vegetables to grow in pots see balconygardenweb. com. Check out growlikegrandad.co.uk, a blog written by an anxiety sufferer who has experienced the great benefits of gardening. He posts some great tips for gardening on a budget too!

Get the kids involved too

You’ll find lots of resources online to encourage the kids to get outdoors, gain a sense of achievement and boost their mental wellbeing. Check out childrensgardeningweek.co.uk and make the most of National Children’s Gardening Week at the end of May.

Two quality books delivered to a child’s front door including two 16 page engaging activity books, which are full of fun, IDEAL educational and creative content PRESENT WWW.LETSGOREAD.CO.UK/GCN FROM £16.99 PER BOX ORIGINS OF MAY DAY

May Day has its roots in astronomy. We’re (about) halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice! It’s one of the Celtic cross-quarter days, which celebrated the midway points between all solstices and equinoxes of the year.

As with many early holidays, May Day was rooted in agriculture. Springtime celebrations filled with dance and song hailed the sown fields starting to sprout. Cattle were driven to pasture, special bonfires were lit, and both doors of houses and livestock were decorated with yellow May flowers.

Later, celebrations evolved to speak more to the “bringing in the May” with the gathering of wildflowers and green branches, the weaving of floral garlands, the crowning of a May king and queen, and the setting up of a decorated May tree, or Maypole, around which people danced. Such rites originally may have been intended to ensure fertility for crops and, by extension, for livestock and humans, but in most cases this significance was gradually lost, so that the practices survived largely as popular festivities.

THE MAYPOLE DANCE

Wrapping a Maypole with colourful ribbons might be the most known tradition that still exists in some schools and towns. Originally, the Maypole was a living tree brought in from the woods with much merrymaking. Ancient Celts danced around the tree, praying for good crops and fertility. For younger people, there was the possibility of courtship. If paired by sundown, the courtship continued so that the couple could get to know each other and married 6 weeks later on June’s Midsummer’s Day. This is how the “June Wedding” became a tradition. In the Middle Ages, all villages had Maypoles. Towns would compete to see who had the tallest or best Maypole. Over time, this Old English festival incorporated dance performances, plays, and literature. People would crown a “May Queen” for the day’s festivities.

MAKING A MAY BASKET

Ever heard of the May baskets? People would leave a paper basket or cone with spring flowers and sweets on each other’s doorstep usually anonymously. This tradition was popular through the 19th and 20th centuries, especially with children or sweethearts. The custom was to knock on the door, yell “May basket!,” and then run. If the recipient caught the giver, he or she was entitled to a kiss.

17 ORCHARD GROVE

I received a letter through the post a while back regarding Taunton’s new garden community: Orchard Grove. In case you did not read the letter or have forgotten, Orchard Grove is the new development taking place at the moment in the fields of Higher Comeytrowe. Like me, you may well have heard the diggers and other large machinery at work. From the Comeytrowe Community Park, it is possible to look across and get a view of the work in progress: fields have lost their green and are now brown. On one weekend I could see machinery chugging back and forth across the land. I guess they were taking advantage of a dry day. But, to go back to the letter, I decided to look at the web site associated with Orchard Grove. For April the news update is as follows:

“We are continuing to create the ‘spine road’ that will be the main arterial road that eventually runs from the top to the bottom of Orchard Grove, and the first section of tarmac will be laid this month. Another new road, looping around the first homes by Vistry is being built at the moment. These new roads are intentionally being created early in the project, to enable those working on site to move around, but also to ensure vital infrastructure is there as soon as the first residents arrive.

Given the milder and drier Spring weather, cut and fill earthworks are in full flow. This involves taking earth from one part of the site and filling another area, compacting it to alter the contour of the land, and create the right levels for construction. Work has started on the attenuation basins, which are sustainable forms of urban drainage, and these will soon be joined by new retaining walls.

This month the Vistry site team will arrive to begin work on 142 new Vistry Group and LiveWest homes. Taylor Wimpey is making good progress, with foundations being dug for its first homes. You can expect to see an

May 6, 7 - Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Eta Aquarids is an above average shower, capable of producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. Most of the activity is seen in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the rate can reach about 30 meteors per hour. It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet Hal-ley, which has been observed since ancient times. The shower runs annually from April 19 to May 28. It peaks this year on the night of May 6 and the morning of the May 7. The second quarter moon will block out some of the faintest meteors this year. But if you are patient, you should still should be able to catch quite a few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

May 11 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 19:01 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

May 17 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation of 22 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset.

May 26 - Full Moon, Supermoon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 11:14 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Flower Moon because this was the time of year when spring flowers appeared in abun-dance. This moon has also been known as the Corn Planting Moon and the Milk Moon. This is also the second of three supermoons for 2021. The Moon will be near its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.

May 26 - Total Lunar Eclipse. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes com-pletely through the Earth’s dark shadow, or umbra. During this type of eclipse, the Moon will gradually get darker and then take on a rusty or blood red colour. The eclipse will be visible throughout the Pacific Ocean and parts of eastern Asia, Japan, Australia, and western North America.

Spend time in the garden Even if you don’t have a very big garden, spending time outdoors can be beneficial.

For ideas of some of the best vegetables to grow in pots see balconygardenweb.com. Check out growlikegrandad.co.uk, a blog written by an anxiety sufferer who has experienced the great benefits of gardening. He posts some great tips for gardening on a budget too!

Get the kids involved too You’ll find lots of resources online to encourage the kids to get outdoors, gain a sense of achievement and boost their mental wellbeing. Check out childrensgardeningweek.co.uk and make the most of National Children’s Gardening Week at the end of May.

Seek help with problem finances At CAP, we know all too well the link between financial struggles and men- tal ill-health. If you have money worries, seek help sooner rather than later. There are lots of free debt counselling charities that can help. Just taking this first step can feel like a weight has been lifted. Have a look at moneysavingexpert.com/loans/debthelpplan for advice.

Seek help with your mental health If you’re struggling with your mental health, don’t suffer in silence. Get help through Mind (mind.org.uk) or your local GP.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK charity with over 580 services across the country delivering debt counselling, money management, job clubs, life skills groups, and support for people breaking life-controlling dependencies. Visit capuk.org to find out more.

14 23 23 Comeytrowe Park News

The last year has been a particularly trying time but with Spring on its way things are hopefully looking up now. Throughout the lockdowns the park has been a haven of peace, tranquillity and activity for many local residents and families. We have been delighted to see many new families making use of the playground, the hard court area and of course the copses and open spaces. Dens have been built, trees have been climbed and over the seasons there have been cherries to pick and flowers to admire. We have all enjoyed watching and listening to the birds as they have built nests in the nesting boxes and raised their young. All in all Comeytrowe Park has been at its best over the last 12 months, thanks to the work of the team at Somerset West and Taunton and our ever vigilant dog walkers and volunteers keeping an eye on things!

We were of course delighted that this work was recognised in the award of a Community Green Flag for the second year and our application for next year has been accepted. The park is also a beneficiary of a grant from Somerset County Council as part of a bid with the Green Forum looking at ways to combat climate change. Our bid Hedges and Edges – looks at ways to improve carbon capture and increase the biodiversity of our open spaces through planting and improving the hedgerows in our area. With the help of Somerset West and Taunton Council we will be replenishing the ancient hedgerows around the park and replanting where they have been removed. The other partners in the bid are Longrun Meadow, Netherclay Community Woodland and Victoria Park. We will be bringing you more news on this as the project gets under way. Finally we would like to announce that we have a Facebook page! If you would like to join our group of friends and supporters and add your photos or news to the site just look for Friends of Comeytrowe Park and request permission to join. We very much look forward to welcoming you, both to the Facebook page and of course to the park if you have yet to visit.

SERVICE The Taunton Stop Line is arguably the bestpreserved stop line in the country, and it begins at FOR YOUR the coast near Highbridge in North Somerset, with the line of defences running down from the GLASS & GLAZING Pawlett Hams and along the River Parrett to Bridgwater. From here, it tracked the bank of the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal southward to Creech St. Michael, where it then joined and followed the driedup bed of the old Taunton & Chard Canal. Near the village of Ilton, the Dodhill Corner, stop line traced the route of the Great Western Railway southward until it reached just north Kingston Road, Taunton TA2 8AT of Chard Junction, where it then followed the route shared by the Southern Railway and the Tel 01823 451740 & Fax 01823 451719 River Axe. 22 11 26 AGE UK

Age UK Somerset encourage a move towards “normality” with their “Let’s move together and improve together” campaign.

The last year has been an unusual and difficult one for most but for many older people it has been particularly hard, with long periods of self-isolation impacting both mental and physical wellbeing. Research by Age UK has shown that many previously independent older adults have reported a loss of physical strength and capability, finding it harder to do daily activities such as going up stairs or walking the same distances they used to. Some have embraced modern technology, learning new skills and participating in online activities, helping them to maintain their existing levels of fitness but this has not been as rewarding as getting out and spending time with friends and family.

Throughout the pandemic, Age UK Somerset have supported older people in the County. Because they help those who are most at risk from severe illness due to coronavirus, and those whose movements have been most restricted, they have been busier than ever. Despite some services being paused due to their physical nature, others sprung up to meet the new needs of this strange time, for example their telephone service called “Friendly Phone calls”, to help alleviate feelings of isolation and boredom.

The charity’s Ageing Well team, who normally run and manage hundreds of community-based exercise classes, have held a wide range of online exercise sessions since last July. These classes have encouraged older people to maintain their current levels of fitness and given them a chance to see familiar, friendly faces. Full technical support has been given by the team and classes have included Tai Chi, yoga, pilates, general fitness and relaxation sessions.

With plans to resume their community-based classes from the 17th May, Ageing Well have launched an inspiring “let’s move together and improve together” campaign. Whilst wanting to encourage older people to start coming to classes again, they are aware that many are nervous of doing so. They are putting in stringent measures to provide the greatest level of reassurance, reducing the number of participants allowed in each class and introducing a new booking system. Classes will be re-started over a number of weeks, so that the team can oversee and manage them safely and effectively. A variety of online sessions will continue to run for those who would prefer to stay at home for the time being.

From advice, through to measuring, supplying, and expert fitting, our aim Anyway, enough of my rambling. Over the last few months I decided I wanted to branch out and find a new genre to read (away from grumpy London detectives and is to provide you with the best service. government conspiracy plots). I’ve always loved history, so after some digging Visit our showroom to view our extensive range of options. Samples about, I came across this series of six books around the central character of th available to take away. Giordano Bruno – who was a real person in the 15 century – although these books are entirely works of fiction (or are they…?). Bruno is an Italian monk (and philosopher, poet and scientist) on the run from the Cook Way, Bindon Road, Taunton, TA2 6BJ Roman inquisition, and finds himself in England, at the height of the rein of Queen Open Monday Friday 9am 5pm, Saturday 9am 2pm Elizabeth (the first one). He finds himself in the employ of Sir Francis Walsingham, 01823 335952 or email [email protected] the Tudor Queen’s chief spymaster. Over the series of books he is tasked with investigating murders, plots of treason and infiltrating groups of rebellious traitors. We see him meet several of history’s main players, and the books are written in such a captivating and mesmerising way, that you can feel them come to life out of the pages of the history books we studied as children, to become living, breathing people. Plus there’s some murderous goings on that need solving, which is always a plus for me. I don’t have the word count here to be able to go into great detail about the entire series, but I must say that these books made a real impact with me; they are so cleverly crafted that you get easily immersed into the story and the words, thoughts and feelings of the characters just flow. The first book is Heresy, and I would give this 5 stars (in fact, I’d give all of the six books 5 stars. Even the miserable soand sos on Goodreads give it just under 4 stars, and they’re normally a fierce bunch of critics), and the series is definitely in my top 10 of all time. So if you’re after something new (especially if you like history, crime or stories based on real people) then I’d strongly recommend this (or if you’re a fan of Joanne Harris or Philippa Gregory books you should enjoy this as well).

I must finish up by mentioning an excellent children’s book subscription website that I was introduced to. For a small monthly fee, they send your child/grandchild two age suitable reading books and an activity pack: www.letsgoread.co.uk so why not take a look yourself if you’re after a book based present for a child.
