UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Architecture in the Experience Economy: The Catalog Showroom and Best Products Company A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture by Christina Bernadette Gray 2019 © Copyright by Christina Bernadette Gray 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Architecture in the Experience Economy: The Catalog Showroom and Best Products Company by Christina Bernadette Gray Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Sylvia Lavin, Chair Although it is often assumed that production must logically precede consumption, the development of postmodern architecture complicates this narrative. The development of postmodern architecture undermined established structures by centralizing the role of consumption and the consumer. This dissertation examines ways in which various conservative trends pushed the consumer closer toward production. These changes ushered in the experience economy of which Best Products Company and the broader catalog showroom phenomena were particularly emblematic. Drawing on these changes within the history of retail architecture, this dissertation sets out to explore how architecture emerged into the postmodern period as a box, a malleable shell that was increasingly being invaded and overturned by a powerful consumer. ii This dissertation of Christina Bernadette Gray is approved. The years between the late 1960s and the late 1990s were tumultuous for the comic book industry. At the societal level, these years were saturated with changes that challenged normative ideas of sex roles and gender. The goal of this study is two-fold: it documents the specific contributions to the comic book industry made by the women interviewed, and it addresses research questions that focus on gender, change, and comic books. -

This project asks: What was the role and status of women in the comic book industry between the early 1970s and late 1990s? By utilizing moderately scheduled, in- depth interviews with women working in the comic book industry during this period, this study explores their experiences and treatment while working in an insular, male- dominated field. -

San Francisco, CA 94115-4424 APPLICATION INFORMATION Title: FORBIDDEN KNOWLEDGE: Psychedelics & Science Grant period: From 2017-05-01 to 2017-11-01 Project field(s): Interdisciplinary Studies, Other Description of project: Forbidden Knowledge: Psychedelics & Science explores our Western culture’s long, turbulent relationship with psychedelic substances across time. The recently permitted medical trials using hallucinogens form the film’s core, which are otherwise still illegal. Following a number of, PTSD victims through their psychedelic-assisted therapy will provide the film’s dramatic arc and help viewers judge these experiments for themselves. This is the first time camera access is granted to film participants before, during and after such a trial. The film will also shed light on neuroscientists’ explorations of the brain’s inner workings through psychedelics, and on the spiritual dimensions they induce. Critics and skeptics of will give voice to concerns about the safety and value of psychedelic research. Placing the topic in a broad cultural and philosophical context, the film will braid together historical and present-day narratives, employing perspectives from both the sciences and humanities.
