A FESTIVAL OF LESSONS AND CAROLS MOUNT CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH ______Christmas Eve December 24, 2020

PRELUDE

THE CALL TO WORSHIP P Beloved in Christ: Welcome! God has brought us together this night to hear again the good news that He so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

Like shepherds long ago who hurried off to Bethlehem to see for themselves the good news the angel announced to them, in heart and mind let us go with them to see this thing which has come to pass: a baby lying in a manger who is Christ the Lord.

Therefore let us hear again from Holy Scripture the loving purposes of God from the first days of our sin unto the glorious Redemption brought us by the Holy Child: and let us make this place glad with our carols of praise. With angel choirs let us blend our voices to sing, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to all on whom his favor rests.”

Come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN: Once in Royal David’s City LSB 376 Words: C.F. Alexander 1818-1895 Music: H.J. Gauntlett 1805-1876 Arr. David Willcocks Soloist: Malachi Elbert

Soloist: Once in royal David’s city, stood a lowly cattle shed. Where a mother laid her baby, in a manger for His bed. Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ, her little child.

Choir: He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, and His cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy.

ALL: For He is our childhood’s pattern, Day by day like us He grew, He was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us He knew; And He feeleth for our sadness, And He shareth in our gladness.

ALL: And our eyes at last shall see Him, through His own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle, Is our Lord in heaven above; And He leads His children on, to the place where He is gone.

ALL: Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, Shall we see Him; but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high; Then like stars His children crowned, All in white, His praise will sound!

THE INVOCATION P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

THE CHRISTIAN GREETING AND THE LORD’S PRAYER P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Fully confident of God’s goodness, thankful for His love, and trusting His mercy, let us pray to Him for the needs of the whole world, and all His people; for peace upon the earth He came to save; for love and unity within the one Church He did build.

And particularly at this time let us remember before Him the poor, the cold, the hungry, the oppressed; the sick and those that mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; all those who know not the Lord Jesus, who love Him not, or have grieved His heart of love.

Lastly let us remember before Him those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we forevermore are one.

These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the words which Christ himself has taught us:

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE HYMN: Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful LSB 379 Oh, come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant! Oh, come ye, oh, come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him Born the king of angels:

Refrain: Oh, come, let us adore Him, Oh, come, let us adore Him, Oh, come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Highest, most holy, Light of light eternal, Born of a virgin, a mortal He comes; Son of the Father now in flesh appearing! Refrain

Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God in the highest: Refrain

Yea, Lord we greet Thee, Born this happy morning; Jesus to Thee be glory giv’n! Word of the Father now in flesh appearing: Refrain

THE FIRST LESSON Genesis 3:8-15, 17-19 God tells sinful Adam that the seed of the woman will bruise the serpent’s head.

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

THE ANTHEM: Noël Nouvelet Mount Calvary Lutheran Choir French Traditional Carol, Translated and Arr. John Rutter, b. 1945

Noël, sing Noël, good people gathered here. Offer thanks, ye faithful to the news give ear. Sing we Noël, a new King born today. Noël, sing Noël good people gathered here.

Unto humble Shepherds came the angel near; Hence, said he, to Beth’lem, be ye of good cheer. Seek there the Lamb of God, love’s own pure ray. Noël, sing Noël good people gathered here.

When to Bethlehem they came in lowly fear, found they gentle Mary with her Son so dear. Heav’n’s mighty Lord all cradled in the hay, Noël, sing Noël good people gathered here.

Eastern sages seek him, in the darkness drear By a star illumined shining forth so clear, Guiding them to Beth’lem far away. Noël, sing Noël good people gathered here.

Now doth our Saviour Jesus Christ appear, Bringing salvation promised many a year. By His redeeming blood this happy day. Noël, sing Noël good people gathered here.

THE SECOND LESSON Isaiah 9:2-7 The prophet foretells the coming of the Savior.

P The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before You as people rejoice at the harvest, as people rejoice when dividing the plunder. You have shattered the yoke that burdened them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. C For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. P Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign over His kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness forever. C The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

THE HYMN: It Came Upon the Midnight Clear LSB 366 Text: Edmund Sears. 1810-76 Tune: Richard Willis, 1819-1900

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold. “Peace on the earth good will to all, from heav’n’s all gracious King” The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.

All you, beneath the heavy load, by care and guilt bent low. Who toil along the dreary way with painful steps and slow: Look up, for golden is the hour, Come swiftly on the wing. The Prince was born to bring you peace; of Him the angels sing.

For lo, the days have come to pass by prophets seen of old. When down into the circling years – came Christ as was foretold. His word of peace shall to the earth God’s ancient promise bring. And all who take this will hear the song the angels sing.

THE THIRD LESSON Isaiah 11: 1-4, 6-9 The peace that Christ will bring is foreshown.

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

THE HYMN: Angels We Have Heard on High LSB 368 Traditional French Carol, Nouveau recueil de cantiques, 1855

Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains, And the mountains in reply, echoing their joyous strains. Gloria in Excelsis Deo! Gloria in Excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be – Which inspire your heav’nly song? Gloria in Excelsis Deo! Gloria in Excelsis Deo!

Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria in Excelsis Deo! Gloria in Excelsis Deo!

THE FOURTH LESSON Micah 5:2-5a The prophet Micah foretells the glory of little Bethlehem

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace.

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

THE HYMN: O Little Town of Bethlehem LSB 361

O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep, The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light. The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of won-d’ring love O Morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth. And praises sing to God our King, and peace to all the earth!

How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heav'n. No ear may hear his coming; But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him, still The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Immanuel!

THE FIFTH LESSON Luke 1:26-35, 37-38 Setting for us and for all an example of great faith, the Mother of our Lord surrenders herself to the will of God and, by the Holy Spirit, conceives the Savior of the world.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy--the Son of God. For nothing will be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

THE HYMN: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing LSB 380 Words: Charles Wesley 1707-1788 Tune: Felix Mendelssohn 1809-1847

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn king; Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled.” Joyful, all you nations, rise; Join the triumph of the skies; With angelic hosts proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!” Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King.”

Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold him come, Offspring of a virgin’s womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see! Hail, incarnate deity! Pleased as Man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Immanuel! Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the son of righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings. Mild He leaves His throne on high; Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

THE SIXTH LESSON Matthew 1:18-23 Setting for us and for all an example of humblest obedience, Joseph submits to God’s call to be the earthly father of his Son.

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” — which means, “God with us.”

THE APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE SERMON HYMN: Joy to the World LSB 387 Text: Lowell Mason, 1792-1872 Tune: Georg F. Handel, 1685-1759

Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive its King; Let every heart prepare Him room And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains, repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy. Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow – nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow – far as the curse is found Far as the curse in found, Far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders of His love.

THE MUSICAL OFFERING: Never Do Bells Ring More Sweetly Mt. Calvary Lutheran Choir Süsser die Glocken nie klingen German Trad,

Never do bells ring more sweetly then at the Christmas time. Then do the angels in heaven, join in the joyful chime. As on the night when the Christ Child was born. As on the night when the Christ Child was born. Sound the good news near and far, Sound the good news near and far.

Now, while bells are ringing, Jesus comes once more to earth, Bringing His blessings to mankind As on the night of His birth. Brings His redemption to one and all. Brings His redemption to one and all. Sound the good news near and far, Sound the good news near and far.

Ne’er stop your joyful ringing over this old world, wide. Tell us again that our Savior, comes on this Christmas tide. Then let us join in your joyful song. Then let us join in your joyful song. Sound the good news near and far, Sound the good news near and far.

THE CHRISTMAS GOSPEL Luke 2:1-20 Jesus is born.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, “Fear not, for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, “Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.” And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

THE CANDLE LIGHTING P Tonight we celebrate the mystery of God, that he took on flesh; was shown to be righteous by the Spirit; was praised by angels who saw him; was preached among the nations; was believed in the world; and was taken up in glory. As Mary, the Mother of our Lord, carried the Light of the world in her arms in his infancy, we too are called to carry his light in our lives and to reflect his radiance so that all may see Him in us and give glory to God the Father for Him. We light candles to remind us that He came to dispel the dark shadows of evil and to make the whole universe radiant with the brilliance of His eternal light. The light has come and is shining upon a world enveloped in shadows; the Dayspring from on high has dwelled with us and has given light to those who lived in darkness.

The acolytes and ushers will light the candle of the worshiper in each seat nearest the aisle, who then passes it on. It is requested that no lit candles be tilted – hold the candle upright when lit. Parents should use good judgment in their decision whether a child is old enough to have his or her own candle. They can always “share” with you. Also be gentle when you blow out your candle when the lights are restored so that wax is not sprayed. Thank you.

As the candles are lit, we sing the following carols:

THE HYMN: What Child Is This Text: William Dix, 1837-1898 Tune: Greensleeves 16th Cent. English Trad.

What child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angel’s greet with anthems sweet While Shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The babe the Son of Mary!

Why lies He in such mean estate where ox and ass are sleeping? Good Christian fear; for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, The cross be borne for me for you; Hail, hail! The Word made flesh, The babe the Son of Mary!

THE HYMN: Infant Holy, Infant Lowly Infant holy, Infant lowly, For His bed a cattle stall Oxen lowing, Little knowing Christ the child is Lord of all Swiftly winging, Angels singing, Bells are ringing, Tidings bringing Christ the child is Lord of all! Christ the child is Lord of all!

Flocks were sleeping, Shepherds keeping Vigil till the morning new Saw the glory, Heard the story, Tidings of a Gospel true. Thus rejoicing, Free from sorrow, raises voicing, Greet the morrow: Christ the child was born for you! Christ the child was born for you! Text: Public domain

THE HYMN: O Holy Night! Text: Placide Cappeau, 1808-1877 Tune: Adolphe Adam, 1803-1856

O Holy night! The stars are brightly shining It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and sorrow pining, Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope – the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Choir: Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His Gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother, And in His name all oppression shall cease.

ALL: Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we; Let all within us praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord! O praise His name forever! His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim! His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!

THE HYMN: Away in a Manger Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care, And take us to heaven to live with Thee there.

THE HYMN: Silent Night, Holy Night Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight; Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing “Hallelujah, Christ, the Savior is born, Christ, the Savior is born.”

Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace! Jesus, Lord, at thy birth; Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

THE BENEDICTION Luke 1:68-75 P May He who is the Light of the world lighten our darkness and give to us all the light of life. C Amen.
