RTÉ’s Television Division continued to face many challenges in 2000 in maintaining its position as the primary choice for Irish viewers. While acquired programming will remain a key element of successful competitive scheduling, quality home produced programming will be the cornerstone of our services to the Irish public.

Development work began on new programming in the areas of drama and entertainment that are vital for RTÉ’s future success. The RTÉ Authority released reserves for the establishment of a strategic production fund that would see the increased production of Fair City to four nights per week; the production of a new family drama serial; a new entertainment series and a new “reality” format.

This programming success was achieved against a back-drop of increased competition and increasing costs. That pattern will continue and accelerate in 2001. Notwithstanding the challenge involved, the Television Division is committed to continued production of quality programming. Drama co-production planned for 2001 included major international co-productions in dramas and documentaries, as well as a television history of Ireland in the first millennium. Black Day at Blackrock by Gerry Stembridge, a new Irish drama dealing with contemporary issues, was completed for showing in early 2001 and filming was also completed on Random Passage, a Canadian co-production starring Colm Meaney and Aoife McMahon.
Other new strands of programming developed for 2001 included a multi-cultural series, a property series, an Arts review series and a series dealing with relationships in contemporary Ireland.
I measc na gcl á raicm í nua a forbra í odh do 2001 bh í sraith ilchult ú rtha, sraith seal ú is, sraith l é irmheasa ar na hEala í ona agus sraith a bhreithneoidh caidrimh in É irinn na linne seo.
The division also played a central role in the preparation of the application for an increase in the television licence fee and advanced ambitious plans and targets for production conditional on additional funding.
