For many parents, the birth of a child is a deeply spiritual event. The Church recognises this, and provides a Service of Thanksgiving for the Birth of a Child for those who would prefer this to a ‘christening’ (now more commonly called ‘Baptism’). It includes prayers for the child and family, and a recognition of all the hopes invested in the child, and is a great way to start a little life.

Please contact your churchwardens for more details. The allocated Baptism dates for 2018 are - 13th May, 12th August, 14th October

From the Church of the Epiphany Parish Register

11th February - The Baptism of Matilda Jacq Peplow 13th February - The Funeral of Dennis Armstrong Foster

Tockwith Church is open every Sunday between 12 noon - 4pm

Did you know that Tockwith Church has a Facebook page? It is an excellent way to keep in touch with the local community regarding what is happening in church. It’s a great way to keep in touch with busy mums and dads and remind them of events that are coming to church. We pop lots of photos on of various events at church.

Our Year 5 and 6 children have taken part in some fantastic sporting events. We had a Tag Rugby Tournament at Tadcaster Grammar School where the children did brilliantly and they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We also made it through to the final of the Indoor Athletics competition, at Read School in Drax, as we won the Tadcaster cluster of schools qualification round. We came third in the final which is an amazing achievement for our children.

On the 22nd March, 4 of our Key Stage 2 children will be competing in the North Cross Country Final which will be held at Dalby Forest. Our children will represent the Tadcaster Sports Partnership Cluster of Schools at this event. Well done.

Year 5 and 6 visited York Minster and St William’s College as part of their Diocesan Day. They had a guided tour of the Minster, visited the Undercroft and learnt about the history and archaeology of York Minster. It was an extremely interesting day out for us all.

Our Year 3 and 4 children had a fun packed day at RHS Harlow Carr Gardens as part of their work on plants and the environment. They took part in a Plant Hunters workshop and had a tour of the gardens.

Our Year 3 children will be attending Robinwood Activity Centre for their 3 days residential on 5th – 7th March. The children are extremely excited about this and are looking forward to completing a whole range of team based activities such as Caving, Bouldering and of course, the Piranha Pool! This is an excellent opportunity for the children to bond and work on their Perseverance and Resilience skills. There will be a Robinwood assembly on Monday 12th March at 2.45pm which parents are welcome to attend.

The children in Reception will be visiting Piglets Adventure Farm in Strensall. They will meet a variety of different animals, ride on a tractor and have the opportunity to plant some seeds!

We have our Easter Service at Tockwith Church on March 28th followed by an Easter Lunch at school. Parents and carers are very welcome to join us for both of these special events.

Every child needs, help, hope and someone who believes in them.

IT COULD BE YOU?

There are still three vacancies on the Parish Council. Having three vacancies does affect the efficient running of the Council.

Existing Councillors are doing their best but they need more help. The forthcoming Borough and Parish Council Elections will give you the perfect opportunity to make a difference to your community and stand for election.

The Council Wards have been revamped so that the Marston Moor Ward forms part of an extended Electoral Ward to include the additional communities of Kirk Hammerton, Old Thornville, Cattal, Hunsingore and Walshford. This is to streamline the number of Councillors on Harrogate Borough Council.

The first elections under the new system will be on Thursday 3rd May.

This move means that all the Council Wards will have elections on the same day.

This also means that elections will also be held for Parish Councils, some of which are only half way through a four year term of office, again this is meant to re-align the date of elections so Parish Council Elections and Borough Council elections are held on the same day intended to reduce costs to the Borough Council.

A Notice of Election will be posted on notice boards on 23rd March. This will be an excellent opportunity to put your name forward to become a Parish Councillor and make a difference to this community.

Information regarding consultation concerning the Local Development Plan

Harrogate Borough Council is holding a six week consultation from 26th January to 9th March on the publication of the draft Local Plan.

Previous consultation regarding the plan the Borough Council asked for views on: x The growth strategy, policies and allocations of specific sites for development. x Options for the location of a new settlement and, more recently a preferred location. x Areas of open space that hold particular local significance and, as such, should gain additional protection from development through designation as Local Green Space.

This information was used to update/amend the plan. The purpose of the consultation is for members of the public and other interested parties to tell the Borough Council what you think of the plan.

Where to find the information

The plan is available to view online via the council’s consultation portal at https://consult.harrogate.gov.uk/portal . Printed versions of the main consultation documents are available to view at the following locations during normal office hours:

x Civic Centre, St Luke’s Mount, Harrogate, HG1 2AE. x Knaresborough House, High Street, Knaresborough, HG5 0HW. x Ripon Town Hall, Market Place South, Ripon, HG4 1DD x Libraries across the district and Poppleton library.

The consultation started on 26th January and finishes at 4.30pm on 9th March. You can submit your comments at any point during this period, but it is recommended that you don’t leave it until the last day.

There may be particular items in the Draft Plan that you may wish to comment on particularly allocation of land at Church Farm off Fleet Lane or the preferred new village settlement of Greater Hammerton over the site at Flaxby. Major development within our area will significantly affect the immediate area and it is important to make your views known.

To help you present your comments in the best way for the inspector to consider them, the Planning Inspectorate has issued a standard comment form that is available to complete on-line using the Planning Policy Consultation Portal at: http://consult.harrogate.gov.uk/portal

Alternatively you can download the comment from the council’s website www.harrogate.gov.uk/localplan or collect the form from any of the locations listed overleaf. IF YOU STILL HAVE DIFFICULTY OBTAINING A FORM THEN CONTACT Norman Waller 01423 358588. The form should then be returned to:

Planning Policy Planning and Development P.O. Box 787 Harrogate HG1 9RW

It is asked that you use the comment form because it leads you to comment and answer in the way in which the inspector will consider comments at the public examination. Using the form to submit your comments also means that you can register your interest in speaking at the public examination.

Please make sure you include your name and address with any comments you submit. Comments submitted anonymously or with only an email address cannot be accepted.

All comments received, together with the plan, will be submitted to the government this Summer, who will pass on to the Planning Inspectorate. The Planning Inspectorate will then appoint an inspector and set a date for a public examination of the plan. It is expected this will take place towards the end of the year.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

MARSTON MOOR WALKERS

Hay-a-Park The starting point for our walk, from Coneythorpe, specified a “duck pond”; this turned out to be a village pump. None of the sixteen ramblers who assembled seemed phased by the misinformation as they were all in the right place and ready to start walking along the lane towards mythic sounding Arkendale. After about 500 yards we turned west behind Clareton Moor Farm on a promising well defined track with an unusual long distance view of Almscliffe Crag. This soon gave way to vast expanses of sticky brown furrows. We chose to hug the hedge backs in order not to develop clod feet and indeed this “hedge-backing” was to add half a mile to our overall distance. From just short of the Hollies we turned south on a track which became tarmac for a bit. This leads into Knaresborough eventually, but first goes over and near some delightfully rounded two contour line tumps with names like Far Andrew Hill, Near Andrew Hill and Sixteen Acre Hill. They almost have the appearance of being man or hobbit-made but are more likely the work of 10,000 year old glaciers. Hopewell House was a grander sort of eighteenth century farm with a pediment and sandstone columns with capitals supporting outbuilding roofs. We went on past Hall Farm to turn east through a little wood and take to muddy fields again. Some large pig units with plenty of squealing but nothing to see were by-passed until we arrived at a mighty ditch over which was a substantial but dilapidated bridge. This was The Rampart which joins the Nidd by the caravan park on the A59. (The main road is just about audible but out of sight and does not compromise the countryside feel of this walk.) The Rampart is not a thing to fall into at a winter twilight… we mused. Footpath signs ran out here but we managed to locate a little stile which gave access to Brown Moor and the bank of White Rail Beck. This led us almost to our starting point. However we had to walk past the Tiger and some of us didn’t manage that, because it was open! Next walk on Monday 12th March. 2:00 pm in Staveley by the pub. All welcome. Please come along. Ring: Pete Pozman on 01423 359731 or Text: 07854 313112 Jesus is Our Ladder to God. This was the theme for February Messy Church. 3LQN\SURPLVHVODGGHUVDQGFXUO\ZXUO\·VDOOKHOS to recreate Jacobs Dream. Join us for the next Messy on Sunday 4th March 4-5:30pm. Marston Moor Youth Club is held every Friday night 7-8:30pm, during term time in Tockwith Church and is open to Year 6 and Year 7.

The Ainsty Conservation Society (ACS) is a small, local group based in the village of Tockwith, near York, that aims to promote the awareness of wildlife and conservation to local residents and visitors to our area. We manage two local nature reserves, Tockwith Ings Meadow and Sandholes Wood nature reserve. The AGM will be held at 7.30pm Friday 16th March in Tockwith Village Hall. dŚĞůĂƐƚĨĞǁŵŽŶƚŚƐƚŚĞŵĂŝŶŽďũĞĐƚŝǀĞŚĂƐďĞĞŶƚŽƌĞŵŽǀĞĂƐŵĂŶLJŽĨƚŚĞƐŵĂůůƐĞůĨƐĞĞĚĞĚ ƐĂƉůŝŶŐƐƚŚĂƚĂƌĞŐƌŽǁŝŶŐŝŶ^ĂŶĚŚŽůĞƐtŽŽĚĂƐƉŽƐƐŝďůĞ͘tŚŝůƐƚƚŚĞLJŵĂLJďĞŶĂƚƵƌĞΖƐŵĞĂŶƐ ŽĨƌĞŐĞŶĞƌĂƚŝŽŶƚŚĞLJĂůƐŽŐƌŽǁĂƐĐůƵŵƉƐŽĨĂƐŚĂŶĚŚĂǁƚŚŽƌŶ;ĂŵŽŶŐƐƚŽƚŚĞƌƐͿŝŶƉůĂĐĞƐ ǁŚĞƌĞƚŚĞLJĂƌĞŶŽƚǁĂŶƚĞĚ͘dŚĞĞĂƌůŝĞƌǁĞĐĂŶƌĞŵŽǀĞƚŚĞŵƚŚĞĞĂƐŝĞƌƚŚĞƚĂƐŬ͘

 Tockwith Village Hall

March 2018 Charity Number 508673 To book contact Audrey on

The village hall management committee is pleased to support all of our regular users who provide much needed opportunities for our local community to meet and socialise in comfortable surroundings at affordable prices. Last month we mentioned two events that The Tockwith Players were to stage in February; the “Red Carpet Quiz and Curry Night” and their play “Chase me up Farndale Avenue, s’il vous plait.” Both were thoroughly enjoyable and much appreciated by their audiences. Well done.

This month we would like to draw your attention to three very different user groups and to encourage those who would like to get out more to give one or more of them a try. Note that all of these groups can accommodate people with disabilities.

The Ladies Social Drop-In is held every Monday afternoon during school term time from 1pm to 3:30pm. It is a friendly, calm and jolly environment for chatting and social support. All welcome, whatever your age.

The Tockwith Singers is held every Tuesday evening from 7:30pm to 9:30pm during school term time. Its primary aim is to promote good health and happiness through singing songs you like with other like-minded people. It is about having fun and going home at the end of the evening feeling invigorated. A fabulous voice and an ability to read music are not necessary. All ages and abilities are welcome.

Badminton Club is for those who want some light exercise in a friendly environment. It meets every Friday evening from 7pm until 9pm during school term time. There is only space for one (slightly reduced) court so doubles games are generally played. This means that sitting out time is short and playing time is long. Everyone is welcome and for those who have never played before rackets are available to borrow and current members are very happy to teach the rules. Put your pumps on and give it a go!

Watch out next month for more about other regular village hall users. «««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««««« Would you like to have your say as to how the village hall is run? Then please join our management committee, which meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month, in the village hall, at 8pm. You will be most welcome. For more information contact Fiona on 01423 358 808.

72&.:,7+6,1*(56 In February we enjoyed singing some of our old favourites and trying some new songs from a wide musical genre. Pop, folk, old-time variety, musicals and many more. In March we will still enjoy singing our favourite songs but we will also be starting to pull together our spring programme in readiness for the care home concerts that will be starting in April. Our March sessions will be back in the village hall on 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th starting at 7.30pm. If you think you might like to join us but you’re not sure if you will like it, well, give it a try. Your first week is free and subsequent weeks are only £2. Singing is good for your physical and mental wellbeing. If you want to know more phone Fiona on 01423 358808.

Tockwith Players Entertainment Society

Thanks to everyone who came along to see our February play…we were thrilled to be able to get back to our roots and bring a bit of drama to the village and surrounds.

Our audience really enjoyed the play…they said

A great show 7LPLQJDQGIDFLDO made us H[SUHVVLRQVDUH really laugh. WKHHVVHQFHRI IDUFHDQGWKH Mark almost 3OD\HUVGHOLYHUHG fell off his LQVSDGHV chair at one point.

As always if you would like to be involved with the Players we would love to welcome you in Tockwith Village Hall on any Thursday between 8.00 - 10.00pm You can also follow us on Facebook or check out our lovely website at www.tockwithplayers.weebly.com

Community First Responders – New volunteers required Yorkshire Ambulance Service operates a Community First Responder (CFR) scheme (http://www.communityresponders.yas.nhs.uk/) where volunteers are trained to use life-saving skills in their local area. Tockwith’s CFR group started in April 2015 and expanded in 2017 to include Long Marston.

CFR volunteers are trained in patient assessment, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), defibrillation and oxygen therapy. They are equipped with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), oxygen and a first aid kit. When a 999 call is received by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, an ambulance is dispatched. If required, a CFR volunteer is alerted and asked to assist at the incident to ensure trained assistance reaches the patient as quickly as possible. All the volunteers are based within the community so could be only be a few minutes away from a medical emergency.

Often their role is to simply provide reassurance to patients and their families until the ambulance clinicians arrive. However, in more serious cases where the first few minutes can be critical, they can provide basic life support and oxygen therapy.

CFR volunteers come from all different walks of life and volunteer for different reasons. No previous medical experience or training is necessary although you will need a caring attitude and be able to cope with potentially distressing situations.

To volunteer you need to:

x Be aged 18 or older x Hold a valid, full UK driving licence for at least 12 months with no more than three penalty points x Have access to a car x Be prepared to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service check x Be prepared to undertake occupational health screening x Be prepared to attend the Yorkshire Ambulance Service CFR course

Currently the Tockwith and Long Marston scheme is endeavoring to provide cover daily between the hours of 9am and 9pm but there are not enough volunteers to provide this level of cover consistently. If you are interested in training as a CFR volunteer or would like more information, please contact the Community Responder Resilience Team ([email protected]) or the Tockwith CFR Coordinator, Fiona Steed at [email protected]

Tockwith Fellowship group Thursday 1st March 2:30pm An afternoon with Deacon Rosemary. At 108 Prince Rupert Drive Please check with Gail to confirm the venue RIP DENNIS ARMSTRONG FOSTER 1945-2018 Dennis was a long-time resident of Prince Rupert Drive whose sudden death was a shock to everyone concerned. A remarkable man, with a comprehensive range of knowledge and interests. Primarily a scientist, specialising in chemistry, he was an inspiring teacher but well-informed about much else besides - birds, football, cricket, stars, family history, music etc. Dennis was a great lover of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and the King James Bible so it was fitting that these were in use for his funeral at The Epiphany on Shrove Tuesday (13 February). Above all, Dennis was a loving husband to Veronica and father to Christian. He will be greatly missed by them and his dear friends.

-RWWLQJVIURPWKH0HWKRGLVWPDQVHDW.QDUHVERURXJK ZĞǀĞƌĞŶĚ'Ăŝů,ƵŶƚ While looking through some light reading I found an article in a magazine about common idioms. An idiom is a form of expression natural to a language or person. There are some which refer to people, for example: x A chip on your shoulder - meaning a person has a specific issue about something x Sick as a dog - means you are not well at all. Some use colour to convey other associations. x The blues - can refer to both a style of music and feeling sad. x Out of the blue - means something has happened which was unexpected While others denote actions: x To rub someone the wrong way - meaning to annoy or bother x To jump the gun – means to do something early

One which brought back memories for me was - don’t take your eye off the ball. If someone takes their eye off the ball it means they lose their focus and attentiveness to something. As a young teenager I enjoyed playing hockey and was goal keeper for my school and town. One of the most important things I had to learn was - to be successful in stopping the ball hitting the back of the net - I mustn’t take my eye off it!

Sometimes in our day to day life it can seem as if so much is going on we take our “H\HRIWKHEDOO.” Our attentiveness to the important things is not as precise as it should be and that’s true of our Christian life too. At the end of this month we will once again travel through Holy Week. Five days which guides us through to the very heart of the Christian faith and it’s essential we don’t lose focus during this time. For if we do there is a danger we will go from Palm Sunday to Easter day, without seeing the full picture of Christ’s passion which sits between these two celebrations.

Just a thought.

Blessings *DLO
