FROM Major T.W. Slingsby, Romanby Park, .

A large collection of family papers from Hall was deposited in November 1945; a further collection in July, 1952; and the remainder of the family and estate papers was deposited by Brigadier Brunskill, the Agent, in April 1966, when the Slingsby Estate Office at Scriven was closed.

The 1945 deposit, and the correspondence and pre-nineteenth century documents from the 1966 deposit, are calendared under the YAS No. DD56 A-S. The 1952 deposit in a separate sequence at the end of the collection numbered DD56/1-27.

A list of the 19th and 20th century documents deposited in 1966, which was compiled by Brigadier and Mrs Brunskill, is with the collection. It comprises maps and estate plans, rentals and accounts, some 20th century estate correspondence and some books owned by members of the family.

1610-1633. Papers dealing with the various cases tried in the Duchy Courts whereby Sir Henry Slingsby, knt. Having been fined £200 and deprived of his offices of Receivor in the Honour of Knaresborough, Keeper of the parks of Haye and Bilton, Forester of the Forest of Knaresborough and leases of the manor and bailiwick of Knaresborough, was later re­ instated.

1) 17 Petitions of Sir Henry.

2) 39 copies of his letters to various people touching his deprivation of office.

3) Reasons why he should be pardoned the fine; why he was absent from assizes during his shrievalty; actions committed against him by sheriffs of . Brief of the decree against him for committing ‘waste’ and his answer thereto; his title to estates in Haye and Bilton parks and Forest of Knaresborough; substance of a certificate made by the Lord Treasurer and Lord Chief Justice and Justice of the Pleas to the effect that Sir Henry did not forfeit his office, nor was his Patent void.

Sir Henry Slingsby and the 1611 Survey

Negotiations, petitions, tenants’ claims, rents payable, etc. , rough notes and copy documents in the efforts made by the Duchy to enclose the wastes of the Honour, and

A7 Enclosure of the wastes of the Forest of Knaresborough Sir Thomas Slingsby, 2nd bart. (1635-1688)

Enclosure of wastes and improvement of the Forest is still a matter of dispute in the time of Sir Thomas Slingsby, 2nd bt., culminating in a case tried in the Duchy Court between Sir Thomas Slingsby and Castillian Morris, re the grant of 6,000 acres and other perquisites to Morris. This collection comprises the draft documents, petitions and information prepared on behalf of Sir Thomas, including copies of documents from old family records and the public records, as follows:-

6 1) 1307. Inquisition (taken 1680) from the Tower records re Hay and Haveray parks. 2) 1308. Inquisition taken at Knaresborough re keepership of the forest and lands in Scriven. Case referred to Sir Robert Carr (Chancellor of Duchy) to report. 20) The case for Sir Thomas Slingsby and other tenants against Mr Castillian Morris, claiming that Sir Thomas had a prior claim. Recites previous grant to Sir Thomas in 1669,and leases of other properties in the Honour to himself and ancestors. 1619. 21 Mar. Declaration of uses of a lease granted 2nd March last by Sir Henry Slingsby to John Jackson, Sir John Fenwick, Thomas Moorton, Thomas Waterton and William

Tankerd, of Haye and Bilton Park and Knaresborough Mills, on trust to discharge a debt of Sir Henry’s to his brother Francis of £400 and certain other sums due to the Crown in respect of the revenues due from the Honour.

Documents (copies and originals) collected in a dispute between Sir Henry Slingsby, his tenants, and the relating to the payment of rents on certain DD56 Knaresborough - The Six Shops (continued)

Knaresborough properties, particularly the ‘Six Shops’ in the Market Place, property on Roper Hill, and the Toll Booth (Aula Placitorum). They comprise extracts from the Knaresborough Court Rolls, briefs for counsel and memoranda shewing title to copyhold and other properties in the Roper Hill area, Cock Place, Thomas’ House, Cass’s House, the Castle Garth (alias the Barbican, alias Castle Ditch), the Toll Booth (alias the Town Booth) in the Market Place, where the Borough Court was held with shops, a prison and a warehouse underneath.

There are 2 copies of an undated plan c.1685, of the area with a scale of ells and feet. (Printed in Y.A.J. XXXIII, 1937).

Inquisition taken before Mr Brian Stapleton, Receivor, re Sir Francis Trapp’s lands to find who ought to pay £11.8.5^d to the Crown charged on the lands, formerly Francis Birnand’s lands. 2. 1631. Bundle (1) Early 17th century papers, chiefly lists of tenants (lands to be surveyed), rentals (rents to be increased), lands to be taxed, etc. Also a particular of Sir Henry Slingsby’s lands in Scriven and Knaresborough, undated. (6pp. double foolscap). 1708. Grant to the borough of Knaresborough of a fair or market on Wednesday after the 1st of March and on 25th April, for cattle and the following day for sheep. [Copy}

Bundle (2) Papers collected in a dispute with Peter Benson about enclosure and a right of way, including a Bill of Complaint in Council of the North, by Sir Henry Slingsby of Scriven against Peter Benson (altered from Thomas Gibson) concerning a right of way from Scriven Hall to Hasleheads, 1625. Papers in a dispute between Sir Henry Slingsby and Peter Benson, 1628, claiming that lands in Carrmyre Knowle in Scriven had been bought by Benson and enclosed, except a part belonging to Sir Henry. Because of the hedge Benson could not turn his plough, and had no headland, consequently he ploughed over the ends of Sir Henry’s lands. There was also an attempt to prove Carrmyre Knowle to be in Knaresborough and not in Scriven.

Bundle (3) Documents, chiefly copies and memoranda, probably collected by Sir Thomas Slingsby, as follows:

1541. 2 Oct. Moneys collected from the Liberty and Forest of Knaresborough for presenting to Henry VIII “on his coming to the northe parts”. Names the contributors and amounts paid, totalling £12.7.1d.

TITLE DEEDS date from 1607 when a farmhold in Sigston was acquired by Roger Fawconbridge of Great Otrington from George Lamplughe of Cockermouth. In 1684 the property was acquired by John Turner of Middle Temple, from Lord Fauconberg. In 1738 Charles Slingsby of York married Ann Turner and in 1741 she acquired a fourth part of the property under a settlement made by her father, John Turner of Stainsby. Subsequently, the other three parts were acquired by the Slingsbys.

John Turner’s wife was Mary Pepys, sister and administrator of John Pepys, and a few papers relate to the administration of his estate. Charles Slingsby, then of York, married Catherine Turner in 1738, and acted as executor to several members of the Turner family.

6. Estate of William Turner, Esq., of Kirkleatham (d.1702)

c.1690-1722. Executrix" Mary Turner (his wife) Administration papers, inventories of furniture and plate; sale of plate, linen and household goods, at Stainsby from Mary Turner to her sister Katherine Foulis, for £590, with inventory attached. Papers relating to the estate of Sir Arthur Harris administered by his widow, Theophila Harris (sister of William Turner deceased). These concern the Harris estate in Devon, Cornwall and Norfolk. [The Norfolk was acquired by John Turner serjeant-at-law from the Pepys family], and a disputed mortgage to Lord Mohun. After the death of Lady Theophila Harris, administration fell to William Turner and so to his widow Mary Turner. Several law suits relate chiefly to the Harris estate and Lord Mohun’s mortgage and the Foulis family, and to a protracted law-suit against Mary Turner by Nathaniel Turner, linendraper of London, and others, creditors of William Turner.

1690-1701. Bundle of receipts on behalf of the Hon. Mrs Phillipa Mohun of Eltham, Kent, for payment of annuity due from Lady Theophila Harris. 2 bonds, 1691 and 1693, securing the annuity and one (1694) securing Lady Harris against tax.
