  • The Otaku Lifestyle: Examining Soundtracks in the Anime Canon
THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC by MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ B.M., University of Central Missouri, 2014 Kansas City, Missouri 2019 © 2019 MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON Michelle Jurkiewicz, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2019 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, or anime, has been popular around the globe for the last sixty years. Anime has its own fan culture in the United States known as otaku, or the obsessive lifestyle surrounding manga and anime, which has resulted in American production companies creating their own “anime.” Japanese filmmakers do not regard anime simply as a cartoon, but instead realize it as genre of film, such as action or comedy. However, Japanese anime is not only dynamic and influential because of its storylines, characters, and themes, but also for its purposeful choices in music. Since the first anime Astro Boy and through films such as Akira, Japanese animation companies combine their history from the past century with modern or “westernized” music. Unlike cartoon films produced by Disney or Pixar, Japanese anime do not use music to mimic the actions on-screen; instead, music heightens and deepens the plot and emotions. This concept is practiced in live-action feature films, and although anime consists of hand-drawn and computer-generated cartoons, Japanese directors and animators create a “film” experience with their dramatic choice of music.

Four of the largest societies on campus put together a spectacular show that had audience mesmerised. The vice chancellor kick started the evening by making the audience shake hands and greet other fellow spectators in their own tradi- tional way. This broke the ice and created an enjoyable atmos- phere that set the pace for the rest of the evening. The Korean, Asian, Afro-Caribbean and the Arabic society provided the enter- tainment for the night. The Korean Society Kun-Jung Li provided live music with traditional folksongs, all played on a violin. The music was mellow and soft however this was just the gentle side of the Korean society. The melodious Tai Kwon do takes a step further tracks about love and lovers was followed up by the explosive and Fashion Show fiery action provided by the martial arts experts in Taikwondo. JungYoul Yee ,the president, introduced Taikwondo as one of lat- est sports to be introduced to the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The martial arts students had the audience on the edge of their seats as they decided to show us their expertise in how to kick coke cans – at the audience. • Holladay Dissertation
ABSTRACT Jesus on the Radio: Theological Reflection and Prophetic Witness of American Popular Music Meredith Anne Holladay, Ph.D. Mentor: Christopher Marsh, Ph.D. The image of God in humanity is the image of the creator, the creative spirit, the imagination, manifest in our ability to understand, appreciate, and reflect on the beauty of God in creation. Therefore, the spirit of imagination, beauty, and creativity is intrinsic to the fullness of a life of faith. Art is a boon to a life of faith; additionally art and creativity allow for and create a space for genuine theological reflection. Arguments made about art in general can be applied to forms of popular culture. The foundation for this project explores the nuances between definitions of “popular culture”, and asserts that popular culture can be and often is meaning-making and identity-forming. The theological significance of popular culture is couched in terms of theological reflection and prophetic witness. The implicit assumption that anything dubbed “Christian” maintains theological depth, and creations lacking that distinction are ‘secular,’ or ‘profane,’ and therefore devoid of any moral good or theological import, is false, and a distinction this project serves in dissolving. The third chapter asserts a strong link between theological and prophetic tasks, one flowing from the other. Genuine theological reflection must result in an outward and public response. Theological reflection connects to the truth of one’s lived experience, and speaks honestly about the human story; out of that experience, voices of prophetic witness speak truth to power, out of and in solidarity with lived experiences.
