Fr Johnpromise writes …

When the novelist Dan Brown released his second novel “The Da Vinci Code”, in April 2003, the world ran amok. People scrambled to get a copy of the novel which promised to have uncovered a stupendous secret which had kept hidden for years – The Holy Grail. When the dust settled, it became apparent the novel was fictitious and that the greatest kept secret of Christianity does not lie inside a chalice located at the Cathedral of Valencia, but in the person of Jesus Christ Himself. He is the best kept secret of Christianity because He established an eternal kingdom which endures forever – “a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and peace, a kingdom of justice, love, and peace.” It is this kingdom which is the best kept secret of Christianity that we hear of in this Sunday’s readings. While earthly kingdoms will come and go, the kingdom of God which is already here with us but not yet fully realised, will endure forever because Jesus is the kingdom in person as Joseph Ratzinger stated in his book Eschatology of 1988. This kingdom of God which is the best secret of Christianity is even more intriguing because it continues to spread noiselessly like the seed sown in the ground which grows gradually and steadily and like the mustard seed that gives shade to all under it. As Christians, we might sometimes be tempted to zealously enthrone and cement the kingdom of God on earth; however, it is pivotal that we remember the kingdom of God will never be extinguished from the globe; its ambers will always withstand the worst of storms. That is the way of Jesus as Stephen Cottrell, the Archbishop of York tells us in his recent book “Dear England.”

Coming to Mass As reported in local media, Jersey has delayed lifting many of the remaining coronavirus restrictions by at least a week. However, the legal requirement to wear a mask in indoor public places is removed as from 14 June although the use of masks remains “strongly recommended” anywhere that one metre physical distancing is difficult to achieve. Contact tracing is still needed.

Teas and Coffees As events or gatherings of this kind still require social distancing, contact tracing and the wearing of masks except when sat at a table to eat or drink, it would be unwise to allow teas and coffees after Mass, for the time being. Let’s pray for better days to arrive soon!
