He did that very thing and it is claimed that he is the first man to make the entire journey. His adventures, his descriptions of the varying features of the great river, his references to historic explorers of the past, all these combine to make his book a worth while addition to the literature of the Pacific Northwest. Other records of mountaineering are in cluded and completed files of these publications are highly prized by librarians and other discriminating collectors. In the summer of 1921, The Mountaineers visited Glacier Peak and Lake Chelan. The story of the outing is told by Robert Walkinshaw and the illustrations are from photographs by members of the party. Notice of Project Scoping Meeting by the City of Chula Vista
NOTICE OF PROJECT SCOPING MEETING BY THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA has called and will convene a public project scoping meeting as summarized below: PROJECT: Environmental Impact Report (EIR20-0001) for the Eastlake Behavioral Health Hospital PURPOSE: Solicit public comment on the type and extent of the environmental analyses to be performed under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), such as: Land Use, Aesthetics, Air Quality, Geology and Soils, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Hazards, Hydrology and Water Quality, Noise, Public Services, Transportation/Circulation, and Wildlife. DATES: August 31 to September 29, 2020 online (see review and commenting instructions below) The purpose of a public scoping meeting is to inform the public that the lead agency, the City of Chula Vista Development Services Department (DSD), is evaluating a project under CEQA and set forth in Public Resources Code Section 21065 to solicit public comment regarding the type and extent of environmental analyses to be undertaken. At the scoping stage, DSD describes the preliminary concept of the project, and asks for public feedback regarding the scope of the EIR. Under normal circumstances, public scoping meetings are held in a public location in the community near the location of the proposed project. Pursuant to the Governor of the State of California's executive order N-29-20, and in the interest of the public health and safety, the public may participate virtually in this project scoping meeting. HOW TO REVIEW THE PRESENTATION: Members of the public will be able to access a link to watch a pre- recorded presentation via livestream at https://www.chulavistaca.gov/departments/development- services/planning/public-notices/virtual-meetings. -

United States Department of Agriculture Umpqua National Forest Burned Area Emergency Response Summary – Thielsen Fire October 22, 2020 The Thielsen Fire was detected on September 8, 2020 at approximately 8:30 a.m. after lightning passed through the area. The fire was on the Diamond Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest, approximately 5 miles north of Crater Lake National Park. It burned within one mile of the Diamond Lake Resort, along both sides of Oregon Highway 138, and a small portion of the Mount Thielsen Wilderness. The fire (as of 10/6/2020) encompassed 9,951 acres primarily in a mixed conifer forest. The fire burned a mosaic pattern through most of the area, and the majority burned with low and moderate severity. The Forest Service assembled a Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team on September 26, 2020. This team of experts in soils, geology, hydrology, engineering, botany, recreation, archaeology, wildlife, fisheries, and GIS, began assessing the post-fire effects to critical values on Forest Service lands. BAER critical values include Life and Safety, Natural Resource, Cultural Resources and Property. The team developed a Soil Burn Severity (SBS) map to document the degree to which soil properties had changed within the burned area. Fire damaged soils have low strength, high root mortality, and increased rates of water runoff and erosion. Using the SBS map, BAER team members ran models to estimate changes in soil erosion, stream flows (hydrology) and debris flow (geology) potential. The models compared pre-fire conditions to predicted post- fire conditions to determine relative changes, which are then used to determine the relative risk to different critical values and recommendations to address those things determined to be an emergency. -

FIRST ASCENT OF THE EAST PEAK OF MOUNT LOGAN by GILBERT ROBERTS Mount Logon. North America's second highest peak at 19,850 feet, is also one of the world's largest mountain masses. Located in the wildest part of the St. Elias Range, it has seen little mountaineering activity. In 1925, the first ascent was accomplished by a route from the Ogilvie Glacier which gained the long ridge leading to the summit from King Col. This ascent had gone down as one of the great efforts in mountaineering history. McCarthy, Foster, Lambert, Carpe, Read, and Taylor ulti- mately reached the central summit after months of effort including the relaying of loads by dog sled in the long Yukon winter--a far cry from the age of the air drop. -

The Mountaineer Climbing Code A climbing party of three is the minimum, unless adequate support is available who have knowledge that the climb is in progress. On crevassed glaciers, two rope teams are recommended. Carry at all times the clothing, food and equipment necessary. Rope up on all exposed places and for all glacier travel. Keep the party together, and obey the leader or majority rule. Never climb beyond your ability and knowledge. -

AAC Publications Fall Into Crevasse - Traveling Unroped on a Glacier Alaska, St. Elias Range, Middle Peak At the end of March, I (Colin Haley, 28) left for a climbing trip in Alaska’s St. Elias Range with Portlanders John Frieh and Daniel Harro. We were flown into the range by Paul Claus midday on April 1. We spent a few hours setting up our base camp and then went for a short ski up-glacier to scope our objective. About 20 minutes out of camp, I suddenly broke through a totally hidden crevasse and fell approximately 15 meters, ricocheting off the walls of the crevasse. We had left for our leisurely ski with essentially no equipment, so Daniel immediately skied back to camp to fetch a rope, crampons, ice tools, and harnesses. I was able to climb out of the crevasse with a top-rope (and even managed to rescue my skis and poles). Fortunately, I escaped any truly serious injuries. Unfortunately, however, I had a fractured cheekbone and my trip was over. We skied back to camp and the next morning I flew off the glacier, for a total of about 16 hours in the St. Elias Range. John and Daniel graciously offered to fly out and help get me home, but I was confident I’d be alright, so I told them to stay and go climbing. This accident has undoubtedly made me more wary of glacier travel, even though it’s something I’ve been doing very regularly for over 15 years. I’m sure I will continue to do some occasional solo travel on glaciers, but I absolutely view solo glacier travel much more seriously now. -
