Wonders of the World UILT in the fourth century, B.C., by Artemisia, widow of the noble prince, Mausolus, this B magnificent- tomb was the work of the re nowned Greek architects, Satyros and Pythios, and the sculptor, Scopas. Artemisia herself died before the tomb was finished, consumed, with grief, but the structure was completed and became one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was a splendid marble building, 140 feet high, with a solid lower story surmounted by an Ionic colonnade bearing a pyramid topped by a majestic four-horse chariot carrying the king and queen. The long flight of steps leading to the tomb was guarded by a series of hfelike lions, all expressing power, balance, and majesty. And it is from this tomb that the word, " mausoleum," came to denote any elaborate sepulchre. In 1402 the Knights of St. John destroyed the wondrous memorial; and in 1850 the 3ultan of Turkey permitted the removal of the fragments to the British Museum, where one may yet see these MeOlTERRANEAN SEA stone relics. ^MAltfOLEUmomhsmM aF An IMAOmATIVE flECOIiSTRUCTIOH 'Tfie most magnificent Tomb that the World had ey&r seen"' iRe lion-adorned steps leading to the.
