CLICK, B.B.A., JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY M.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Carolyn Anderson This study examines the ideologies of gender, race, and class present in Martha Stewart’s unprecedented popularity, beginning with the publication of Stewart’s first magazine in 1990 and ending in September 2004, after Stewart’s conviction for her involvement in the ImClone scandal. My approach is built on the intersection of American mass communication research, British cultural studies, and feminist theory, and utilizes Hall’s Encoding/Decoding model to examine how social, cultural and political discourses circulate in and through a mediated text and how those meanings are interpreted by those who receive them. Drawing from textual and ideological analysis of over thirteen years of Martha Stewart Living magazine and twelve weeks of Stewart’s four television programs, I investigate the ways in which the mode of address in Stewart’s media texts positions her simultaneously as a close friend and respected teacher. As the model for “living” in her media texts, Stewart uses these modes of address as the foundation of her messages about women’s roles, racial and ethnic traditions, and social mobility. To understand how readers and viewers make sense of these messages, I conducted focus group interviews with thirty-eight fans of Martha vi Stewart Living between October 2002 and July 2004. Two distinct types of fans emerged as my interviews progressed, and the participants, who have a range of different gender, race, sexuality and class identifications, expressed a variety of positions on the messages about gender roles, racial representations, and class aspiration they observed in Stewart’s texts. I was uniquely positioned to examine how fans’ feelings about Martha Stewart and Martha Stewart Living changed when Stewart was indicted, convicted and sentenced to prison because of her sale of ImClone stock; as a result of my observations, I argue that scholars should take a closer look at how fan practices and beliefs function in fans’ lives and in the larger culture. However, if this is the case, how do we approach costume in a television show like Sex and the City (1998-2004), which we know (via press articles and various other extra-textual materials) to be comprised of designer clothes? Once onscreen, are the clothes in Sex and the City to be interpreted as „costume‟, rather than „fashion‟? To be sure, it is important to tease out precise definitions of key terms, but to position fashion as the antithesis of costume is reductive. Landis‟ claim is based on the assumption that the purpose of costume is to tell a story. She thereby neglects to acknowledge that the audience may read certain costumes as fashion - which exists in a framework of discourses that can be located beyond the text. This is particularly relevant with regard to contemporary US television which, according to press reports, has witnessed an emergence of „fashion programming‟ - fictional programming with a narrative focus on fashion.

    Becca Kleinstein on Martha Stewart Yes, you read that correctly – I chose Martha Stewart as the leader I admire. I’m guessing that quizzical look on your face has something to do with the fact that she spent 5 months in federal prison, or that she is known for being a ruthless tyrant in the professional domain, or even the fact that it is very publicly known that she and her daughter don’t get along (her daughter even wrote a book about their poor relationship!). However, Martha Stewart possesses several leadership traits that I admire and she has been able to harmonize all four of her domains. Marth Kostyra was born in 1941, and was raised in New Jersey by her middle class parents with her four brothers and sisters. Her knack for crafts was obvious from her childhood as she learned crafting, gardening, sewing, cooking, and preserve-jarring from her close-knit Polish American family. Her planning was also evident in her youth. She frequently babysat for the children of Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees and organized birthday parties for the four boys. Martha won partial scholarship to Barnard College and modeled on the side to pay expenses. She initially intended to major in chemistry, but switched to art, European history, and architectural history. She married then law student Andrew Stewart after her sophomore year in college, and after taking a year off from school, earned her degree. Martha had her only child, Alexis, in 1965, and worked as model and stockbroker on Wall Street until 1973.
